1) Keep the room bright.
2) KEEP THE ROOM BRIGHT.
3) Don't sit too close to the TV, ok?
4) This program is brought to you by the following sponsors: Kellog's, King Records, Square-Enix.

What is anime?
Anime is animated entertainment produced primarily for the Japanese market. Don't give me some pedantic bull about anime being a transliteration of the French for animation thus we can discuss the new Spider-Man cartoon in this thread. Stick to Japanese stuff, even if technically it's all animated in Korea.

Is this the manga thread?
Yes, manga (Japanese comics) are also a main topic for the thread.

What else can we talk about?
Closely related subjects such as: novels, visual novels, art books, figurines and other knick-knacks, games, and live-action adaptations of anime or manga. There's a thread for "foreign films," so discuss the new Takashi Miike movie over there, unless it's adapted from an anime or something.

One Piece
was so popular, it got a spin-off thread. All OP discussion should be directed there. Yo ho ho.

What is not ok to discuss?
Piracy, links to download sites (legal sites excepted, of course), drama, old worn-out bullshit from the last 100 threads, hentai (porn).
This is not the "LOLJAPAN" thread, don't come in here to dump every news article you come across detailing some perverse new form of craziness to come out of Japan. Every country is fucked up, Japan is just fucked in a very special way.

Old memes/bullshit: These topics have been done to death, they do not need to be discussed any further:
1) School Days
2) Western comics vs Manga
3) Whether or not Evangelion (original TV series) sucks. The new films, being new, are fair game.

Don't get offended when someone doesn't like your favorite show, or when someone does like a terrible show. Don't gang up on someone who has an unpopular opinion. That's the kind of crap that gets threads shut down.
ElJeffe wrote: »
Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

Also, Clawshrimpy? Yeah, stay out of here. You've lost your anime thread privileges.

This should be your face while reading the anime thread:

There's more of those, I'm sure, but it's hard to say with anything that's not being aired in Japan right now. These lists will only be accurate for so long, since some episodes are released and other get taken down after a while. But it at least gives you a good idea of what's available.

I haven't tackled Crunchyroll yet, since that will be a lot of work.

Edit: A lot of these are hosted multiple places. I just happened to do ANN first. I also tried not to include anime you have to pay for, either a membership or per episode.

Darker than Black should be good and there were a few others which look promising.

Not much in the way of action though, slice of life (and lesbians again) seem to be the theme of the season.

Apparently one died of a concussion pretty quickly and spends an episode or two as a ghost/delusion of the other.
After Yuuki got brained in the head with the piece of stone from the foundations of Tokyo Tower it caused some sort of concussion/hemorrhage that kills him. Mirai spends the final episodes of the show making the trip home talking a hallucination, refusing to believe that he actually died in the hospital and carrying his backpack so he wouldn't have to when in fact he couldn't since he isn't there.

Mari was caught up with what happened to her daughter and mother and didn't realise what was going on until Mirai leaves a note saying she is heading home with her brother. The it all comes out at the end
    D:
It was beautifully done. One of the best shows and endings of the year.

We haven't discussed how awesome Evangelion is in at least three threads. That's probably even including the movies : (

Evangelion is my favorite anime. I cannot, in good faith, argue that it is the greatest anime ever. But, it is the most thought provoking and emotionally satisfying anime, ever.

    And, I mean, come on:

Let's talk about anime fall season 2009 and how completely awful it is.

Seriously guys, a ROT3K anime has probably the most chances of sucking yet it's in my "Maybe follow" list. Something's horribly wrong and I know it's not my tastes.

Darker than Black should be good and there were a few others which look promising.

Not much in the way of action though, slice of life (and lesbians again) seem to be the theme of the season.

Also the latest chapter of Cross Game was great. And ANBU are up to date now to boot!

I am pretty optimistic about finding more shows to watch next season than the current season (I'm basically only keeping up with Spice & Wolf sporadically), though I'm mostly at a loss for what. Nothing really jumps out at me and it seems most of the stuff I look up have relatively new directors so who knows.

Though a funny thing to note is that show about trains being personified as pretty boys has the same director as the first seasons of Honey & Clover and Nodame. That might just get me to give the first episode a shot, if only out of morbid curiosity.

I bloo bloo'd at the end, I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's a masterfully made movie, but I really don't want to watch it again. Or rather, I don't want to experience that movie again.

Grave of Fireflies didn't actually make me cry. I didn't really respond too much to it for some odd reason. Like, even bits of Azumanga make me, but nothing really from Fireflies.

There was two or three that interested me outside of Darker than Black and Cross Game will be continuing on so if nothing else I know there is two I'll be watching. DtB being one of the only action shows ensures that it'll have several good groups covering it. Then there were three slice of lifes I'll give a try.

Ken'ichi does good work though, so I'll keep an open mind on his series.

Given you enjoyed H&C and Nodame was there any reason that you didn't get into Cross Game? It hits a lot of the notes those two series did albeit the slice of life side of it is much more prominent. It's consistency is superb though.

I really enjoyed what I watched of Cross Game, but waiting for episodes kinda killed it for me. That tends to happen to me every now and then, it's more my fault than the show's though.

Sometime when I'm in the mood for it I'll either catch up with the anime or read the manga.

I'm really looking forward to Darker than Black. The first season was amazing. The previews I've seen for the new season look kind of weird, though. In a good way, I guess.

I think I'll watch Fairy Tail as well. Is that going to be long-running, or just a couple seasons?

Did you like Azumanga at all? Imagine somebody spilled a bit of Beck into it, and you've pretty much got a handle on it. I liked it, for what that's worth.

No it is not like Azumanga at all. It's more like Manabi Straight crossed with Lucky Star. Moeblobs doing cute stuff essentially.

    I can't actually argue with this, and I enjoyed K-on a lot.

Of course, I rather liked Manabi Straight. I even tolerated Lucky Star more than most people.

Has anyone posted the big list of new anime for the season anywhere? I'm trying to see what looks interesting.

Manabi Straight was nothing like K-On. Manabi Straight was good, for one thing.

Nothing has been confirmed about Fairy Tail's length yet, so it could go either way. I'm inclined to believe that it will last a season or two and then either have a non-ending or spontaneously pull out an ending out of nowhere, but that's just idle speculation on my part, nothing more.
