I know nothing about music. I like it (in theory I suppose), but I can't say I know any artists that don't end up on TMZ and I can't even tell you what genres I like. Don't ask me if I like bluegrass/grunge-metal fusion, I won't know. Dont' ask me who I listen to because I don't listen to anyone. Don't ask me what it is that I hate as a kick-off point, because again, I don't know.
Just give me suggestions. Anything. Peruvian flute music? Go for it. The Sounds of Africa Volume 6? Alright. Britney Spears? I will try it. What do I have to lose? I need a starting point; convert me to the ways of metal or neo-funk, I'm game.

'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'

OP: I would strongly recommend checking out all the stuff that everyone likes and considers to be classic. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Boston, etc... All of this classic rock seems to be palatable to a lot of people, so you might find it to be a good starting point.
-Simon and Garfunkel (lots of good stuff!)
-Muse (They came out with new stuff recently, but I haven't heard it yet; Supermassive Black Hole, Hysteria, Knights of Cydonia, and Map of the Problematique are some of my favorites)
There are others I'd suggest, but lots of them have already been suggested. Definitely check out Simon and Garfunkel though. Muse may or may not be your thing, but I don't think I've met anyone yet who didn't like Simon and Garfunkel.

Will Ackerman: Delightfully talented musician focusing on soft guitar, stunning vocals, and a wonderful ambient experience. He is generally under New Age or Soft Jazz. His song "Briers by the Well" is a good sample of what to expect (you can play it for free on Rhapsody).
