Continuing to like Bored to Death.

what's your beef with it, guys?

the writing is bad. It is bad writing. The dialogue is fucking horrible.

That whole scene about "top vs. bottom" is a perfect example; awkwardly shoe-horned in, totally cliche and uninteresting, inappropriate (not in subject matter but in timing) and an incredibly misguided attempt to make the two characters look like "bros."

    The dialogue is so. awful.

I have this game that I play when I'm watching TV where I imagine the screenplay as I'm watching it - the set design, the lines of dialogue, the direction. Imagining Bored to Death's lines written upon a page is hilarious.

lord almighty is that show terribly written

you can even hear the actors making fun of the lines at certain points - Ted Dansen in particular does it a lot, most likely because the character was obviously written to be a stereotypically untypical "aged boss with lots of wisdom who is pretty cool" and he is not super interested in playing it that way

shank i'm pretty sure the show is supposed to be subtly ridiculous and inappropriate.

    hence the choice of actors.

    but what do i know

I don't care what the show is supposed to be

it is poorly written in terms of plot development, character action and dialogue

dang I was gonna come in and say how wrong cloudmon is for hating Pushing Daisies and Chuck but there are people espousing the virtues of Family Guy?

I haven't thought an episode of Family Guy was funny since, like, the episode where they went to the South. That was forever ago.

calling a show "bad" isn't pretentious

    god yaya

in fact given that you are an aspiring film writer I would think that you would recognize the importance of solid writing

    and, uh, functional, flowing dialogue

The last Family Guy I watched was the one where stewie keeps beating up the dog and saying 'where's my money'. And it goes on for literally 10 minutes straight.

So I got up slowly, grabbed the remote and turned over. And will never watch Family Guy again.

I maintain that Family Guy can be pretty funny when the jokes aren't (a) pop culture references for the sake of pop culture references or (b) dragged on way too long because "lol they're going on too long"

I enjoyed the Marshall-Barney stuff more than the Ted-date stuff but I think it was a good episode

The doppelgangers really cracked me up; Mustache Marshall is going to be especially hard to top

i wish they made past ted more pompous and jerky, like college ted (Mr. X) or when he was with the redhead from that 70s show. yeah, dopplegangers was good stuff. and marshall's "sexual fantasy" was hilarious

HIMYM is just alright. When you stack it up against the Office or 30 Rock it just can't make it.

It's a different kind of humor, captaink

It goes more for the straight sitcom sort of humor, and pulls it off well, as opposed to the more subtle or borderline absurdist sort that The Office and 30 Rock do so well

True. But it's watchable. Very watchable. And quite consistent which I like. Plus nothing is really pushing it out of my schedule over here in the UK. I'll keep watching it. It's funny.

Do you get the concept that things can be equally good in different ways?

    I'm saying it's not a case of that. I genuinely think it's a lower-quality show.

It's not a bad show, just not an awesome show. I will not buy it on DVD like I do Sunny or the Office.

My problem was just with your statement that it can't hold up against 30 Rock and The Office, when it isn't even trying to do that because it's a different ball game

comedy shows compete against comedy shows

if NBC starts airing a show where people slap each other with fish make knock-knock jokes for a half an hour, you can't say "oh no you can't dislike it, it's a whole different type of comedy"

Wow I didn't realize that "you can't compare it to x" was the same as "you can't dislike it"

    amazing.
