They need more units - in DoW they were the only race to field every unit they had in tabletop.
Also the newest fluff updates haven't been doing them any favours.
Badassitude is one of the vital parts on any Warhammer/40k model.

fantasy battle chaos is all "hey, up here, in the north, you nothern tribes, follow us. We have auras & stuff and we have tribes of beastmen that we created to help you come on it will be cool oh ok you're heading back south out of our influence well shit"
whereas 40k chaos is entirely pervasive throughout the entirety of the galaxy, needing only the tiniest foothold in order to spew forth its influence or creations. And there is official black library fluff where extended psyker concentration has nullified the Necron pariah gene. Which means that Chaos can not only surpass the Pariah, but can effect the Tau, the Tyrannid and the Ork.

Sadly the only way to get better is to practice. And even then I still fuck up with distressing frequency.
Simple Green is your friend in these cases. That and really cheap ebay lots.
I have time on my hands now. I might get some dudes and see if I can find my paint and practice.
I really want to get back into 40k.

While their fluff is awesome they just die way to much.
When the new Space Wolf stuff comes out I'll probably give them a look. They are my favorite SM chapter by far.
