Okay so you don't actually care about the gameplay, you just think massively multiplayer games are useless because you'd rather just play with a group of friends. Some people disagree; they enjoy the persistent nature of the world they're in, they like that they can make their character their own and customize them with clothing and weapons, they like that they can make some kind of impact on another player's experience.
Edit: Matt, stop being obtuse. Inquisitor gave you a short description of the gameplay. It's obvious that there's more to the game than dodging. It's a third-person shooter. They're complex.
No, I do care about the gameplay, there's just nothing here that hasn't been done plenty before. They skinned every generic MMO out there with guns and cars. They're selling you subscription-based GTA4 multiplayer where you can have your character play dressup.

Apart from this slight craziness she has been fairly good to me and is very supportive (pays the uni fees and the living costs and everything).
Well, it's good that she's supportive in that sense. The rest of it, at least to me, makes it sound like "All men are evul!" type stuff. I'm sure it's not the case but upon first reading it that's how it sounded.

Matt it's pretty obvious to everyone here that you're intentionally simplifying the game in order to cast it in a negative light. When you have to resort to that it's clear that you have no basis for the claims that you're making. You're arguing from two separate positions, one being that gameplay is important and dodging is not a significant addition to gameplay despite you having seen videos that shows that it plays quite similar to GTA which brings much more than dodging to the table and the other position being that it isn't gameplay that concerns you but rather that MMOs are worthless and it would just be better if you could play the same game with a small group of friends. You're caught in a contradiction.
you are whining about other people being enthusiastic about something that you are clearly predisposed to not liking
quit being a shit
I'm not predisposed to anything. I watched the first video released, the character creation one, and thought "OK, so what, you can make your own character, what about the game? Why does the first video they release have nothing to do with playing the game?" So I read what info there was, then watched the gameplay videos when they got released and though, "OK, so what? It's GTA4 but bigger." People are fucking falling down because you can put a tattoo on something, the game's all pretty and shit. Who cares? You're still running around doing the same old stuff.
the game was basically marketing itself as a GTA-style MMORPG
what
what exactly were you expecting?
what it is showing off in videos and such is consistent with what they are marketing the game as
which was a open-city crime game where you played as criminals or cops
like a hi-tech online cops and robbers
do you honestly think all games in the same genre are the exact same?
because let me tell you
GTA4 and Saints Row 2 are pretty different games, despite being ostensibly being the same genre of game
Apart from this slight craziness she has been fairly good to me and is very supportive (pays the uni fees and the living costs and everything).

Dude, seriously, you said the difference was that you can dodge a bullet and not a fireball. This is not a purchase-worthy difference. FUCK YES I CAN DODGE EVERYTHING IS AWESOME NOW.
I should probably just give up on this conversation at this point but...
You realize you can't dodge things in 99% of MMOs on the market, right?
By making it so you can dodge projectiles, and the enemy can dodge yours, you create a basic level of mind games and strategy that will hopefully lead to some good yomi.

Oh...well then that sort of explains why I got that impression.
First off, let me reach through my monitor and slap you back to your senses. Next, start doing regular troubleshooting (ie check to make sure the damn thing is plugged in, battery charged, etc.).
Well, what happened was I was using it on the train and playing some Monkey Island for a short bit so I changed it from power-save mode to high performance (I only had a few more minutes), I played it a bit and then the screen went dark but I could still hear the music, so I shut it down. Then when I got home I tried to plug it in and turn it on and the blue "I'm starting" lights popped up but the screen didn't change. I tried plugging it into my mom's monitor and that worked, and I went to use the window's repair thing, but then it shut off. Now my computer won't do anything, even flash any lights or anything.
I plugged it in to charge it and left it for a while, didn't work. I tried pulling out the battery and plugging it directly into the wall, didn't work. I'm seriously freaked out now.
Guys, how do you transfer your cell phone carrier? Like, do I need to cancel with Verizon before I go to T-Mobile or can T-Mobile do all that for me?

Okay Matt is still saying that APB, and by extension GTA, is just a reskin of World of Warcraft, so I am pretty sure he's either full of shit or trolling me. Regardless, I don't want to spend my precious day off arguing about this anymore.

Look.
This started with "Don't show me character creation, show me gameplay.".
Moved into "Gameplay doesn't look like anything I haven't seen before."
And finally into "Dressup in GTA4 for $15 or whatever a month isn't a feature that's going to get me to play the game, when I can already do it for free in GTA4."

APB's gameplay innovations have to be taken into light compared to other MMORPGs
the majority of MMORPGs on the market right now use more or less the same gameplay concepts and combat system.
in basically every MMORPG right now you click on a target, who stays your target until you change your target, and you press number keys until he dies.
you can't "miss" unless the game's to-hit rolls say you miss. the actual player's ability to aim or maneuver is largely irrelevant
MMORPGs do this for a bunch of reasons. the main one is WoW does it, and WoW is the MMORPG that makes all the others say "Marsha Marsha Marsha!"
but it's also a networking issue. MMORPGs have to do massive amounts of more data management and packet moving compared to say, a game of TF2. Real-time aiming, being able to actually move around and the player's actual skill and hand-eye coordination, is a difficult thing to net-code for a MMORPG and it makes most MMO developers shy away from it.
APB is rocking out with it's cock out and having real-time aiming, which is a big deal for MMORPGs.
I mean seriously it's been straight up said that APB is what they wish they could've done with GTA, that Crackdown gave them trouble because of how similar it was to APB, and rumors that they even tried to sell Rockstar the APB idea and turn it into a GTA MMO.
She just had a paranoia about me dropping out of Uni. I think. Plus, she had me essentially wrapped in cotton wool from when I was 12 'cos I'd been so ill for so long.

At any point was it bumped around possibly? Did you try taking the HD out and then put it back in then try and restart?
It's sounding eerily similar to what happened with my laptop when some O/S files got corrupted. Wound up having to format and start from scratch. But I was still able to turn it on, just kept conking out at the windows loading screen, then blue screen, then restart.

If you port your number over to a new carrier your previous carrier will usually cancel your service automatically.
That's some pretty specialised porn, man.
