Man you guys need to get a set of Sennheiser 595 headphones.

    And an X-fi

    And a headphone amp.

    It is fantastic.

Daaamn those are expensive for a set of headphones. They are probably worth it. Mine are some 30 dollar sony crap. I think they might be blown too, since everything on them sounds so muddled together compared to on my computer.

They aren't so bad. My HD650s are about $350USD if you find the right deal. The amp for them was $300USD.
That is quite outa my price range, I'd have to save up for three moths to afford that.

    Fixed.

    Fixed again, asshole.

ok ok. The 701s are great.. but I'm partial to the senn sound.

Other way around for me, I've heard a lot of Sennheisers and I'm not crazy about them. Prefer my K701s. But to each their own.

Edit: Which amp are you using?

Yeah if I had the money I'd get the 650s... but since my amp is just a home receiver and the 650s impedance is so high, I figure i'd go with something that's a little cheaper and easier to power.

I need a decent cheap surround sound solution for my Home Theater setup. See I've got this nice ass HDTV, but we're just using the basic speakers on it. They don't sound bad, but I'd like surround sound for like.. Saving Private Ryan and shit.

Right now I'm using a MisterX built m^3. It's about on par with a Gilmore Lite from what i've read but he built it with my 650s in mind. Sounds fantastic. Next up is to build a DAC for the digital out from my XFI.

sennys are almost always worth it.

i have their earbuds and they are wonderful.

I have a set of mx400s that came with my iriver. For portable use though, I stick to my Westone UM2s. IEMs for portable is glorious. I'm hoping to get some custom molds done in the near future since foamies are a hassle.

Speakers really aren't a bad topic for a thread. I got this cool Yamaha micro-component system 6 years ago for my high school graduation. It's still a a pretty kickass little stereo. I can see myself getting a full-on HD Yamaha setup in a couple years.

If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend this mod for your X-Fi. Extremely easy to do and it improves the sound quality of the X-Fi immensely. I was going to build a DAC as well but after doing this mod I don't really think it's necessary unless you want to spend a lot of money.

I mostly want the DAC because I want to go 6ch analog -> speakers and use the digital (which is 2.0 anyways)-> DAC-> Headamp -> headphones.

Means I get everything I want without switching cables around.

Yamaha Receivers are a great bang/buck. If you're looking in the < $600CAD range it's all I'd suggest.

What should I look into getting for a stero/surround sound setup for my TV? Just a receiver and whatever speakers I can find?

My price range is whatever I can save up in about two months so somewhere between 2 and 300 bucks.

    My Setup:
DISCONTINUED Altec Lansing 251s for surround.
Audigy 2 ZS so I don't have to deal with my onboard.
Sennheiser PX100s for the bus ride. I will never go back to cheap headphones again.
My MP3 player is a Sony NWE107, which apparently is too old to list on their site as a product. It sounds good and hasn't screwed up on me yet, so I'm happy with it.
In the future, I'm probably going to solder up a headphone amp and stick it in some sort of creative housing.

With all the options I added it was $300USD + shipping I think.
I added adjustable bass boost, crossfeed, and passthrough so I can go soundcard->headamp->speakers.

It depends on what your future plans are. If $300 is where you want to stay, I'd recommend one of the logitech offerings for surround. If you plan to upgrade I'd start off with a refurb receiver + some bookshelves for the front.
