Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it,
follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given
their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

as far as i know we still haven't heard from this guy about whether we can use the site again this year....so I may throw a site together real quick at the last second if this all falls through
that was anable
is he still around?

This was my excuse for the midnight kick-off in my town last year. Didn't go to any actual events but still had a blast on this end. We need something akin to anable's site for this year, so whoever steps up to it is a gentleman and a scholar.
As far as stories itself... I've been wanting to write a couple for a while, but have never really worked on them beyond some ideas in my head. (EDIT: After writing them down here, I noticed that I had in fact worked on the second one... but I dont' like what came out of it so I'm redoing it if I choose it =) )
One is a satire, involving people who escape from an insane asylum convinced that they are on a quest to save the world. I only have a vague idea of the characters I want in the story at the moment, but they all represent dramatizations of aspects of our culture that in moderation are considered sane.
The other is a fantasy story based around a historical event (this one) set in rhyming couplet, about a Knight returning to the Vatican to defend it from Barbarossa, but who ultimately ends up divinely rebuked for his bloodlust and mercilessness along his journey. Admittedly, I've written about a dozen pages worth of stanzas, but I think I want to throw them out and start over.
As far as a word count site, I've been playing with Ruby on Rails while attempting to get something special ready for the Magical Mystery Tour this year... maybe I can throw something together? What do you guys need? Do you want to be able to login/create accounts and post your score, or should it be less formal than that (i.e. you just type your screenname and your current count or something, with no real security)? I think I'd need to see the one you guys used last year to see whether it's too much for my Rails-n00b butt to get off the ground before November. =)

I've been to a bunch of write-ins. It's always interesting meeting up with other NaNoers - as you might imagine you get a pretty wide range of backgrounds and writing talent. I'd definitely recommend going.
That sounds super crazy hard. I think it would be awesome if you could swing 50,000 words of it, though.
I've been to the kick-off parties the last two years, and to the TGIO party in 2007. I intended to go to the TGIO party last year, but I wound up lying down on my couch shortly before it intending to take a short nap, which turned into a long snooze, and I woke up in the middle of the night after it was all over.
I never made it to any write-ins before. I intended to last year, but circumstances wound up standing in my way. I did go to an initial get-to-know-you meeting for the local write-in group a few weeks ago, and they had a write-in for NaNo planning already, although I couldn't go to that because I had the flu. I'm hoping to make it to the write-ins this year.
Aye, that's the rough part... 50,000 words seems almost impossible to me with that idea when I really think about it. But I'd really love to work on it... maybe I should in my own time, separate from NaNo. =)
Ahh, cool! So he had just a very VERY basic login capability, and gave some stats. I think I could whip something like that out. I'll try during the week and on this coming weekend, and see if I can get enough free time in that period that I can get it to that state.
I've got to get a host though, I've been meaning to for a while and I've been dragging my feet. I think there's some darn cheap Rails hosting out there (we don't need a lot of bandwidth), so I'll take a look and snag something. =) (if anyone has any recommendations for cheap rails hosting by any chance, feel free to speak up for PM me just in case
EDIT: I just grabbed some really cheap hosting at railsplayground.net. They're apparently not great, but it was cheaper than everywhere else and we don't particularly need anything resembling a lot of bandwidth or space. This thing's going to be minimal... and it'll provide a good hosting site for this and the MMT registration stuff. I'll be working on this and the MMT app during the week and this coming weekend. =)

Problem is, will I be able to fit all this stuff in while I'm doing a full time course in college?
Guess I'll find out ^^
i too was thinking i should get some new hosting for this since the only thing we'd be able to run this off of would be my 266mhz nslu2 and since i was THINKING of doing sig image creation i wasn't sure how great it would run if even a single person put it in their sig..haha....
if you end up not wanting to or having time for this, let me know and i'll throw together a quick Catalyst site
Oh! I didn't realize you had volunteered, I've got to pay closer attention to the thread =)
Aye, but I'll give it a shot, it'll be fun! =)
What's Catalyst? I've not heard of that, I'll have to take a peek around for it. =)

THIS IS NOT THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR... SOMEWHAT NEATO SURE...BUT SURE AS HELL NOT BEST.
Mo-ji-to.
Every day I think 'man I wish it were November 1 so I could get cracking on NaNoWriMo!' I don't know why, since I've gone 25 years and not written anything longer than 4 pages, so I don't know what my rush is.
Though in my defense, that 4 page work of art was my NaNo entry from last year.
I've got sort-of characters and a setting, but so far only the most basic excuse for a plot.
Basically, I've got a young child whose "imaginary" friends are werewolves and vampires. She's always telling her family "don't worry, they're my friends, I'll keep you safe" and they just chalk it up to imagination.
And then one day they find out it's all real. She really IS talking to werewolves and vampires, and they really DO consider her a friend, and her friendship reallly IS what is keeping her family safe from them.
And... then what? I need to do some serious brainstorming over the next week or two.

EDIT: Need someone to tell me how much this sucks...
Story starts with the assassination of a mob boss, protagonist is sent by mob to track killer down with help of a mob soldier. Protag/Sidekick check out the crime scene, many body guards, mistress, janitor, doorman and mob boss are all very dead. Hatchet is found in the boss's head/body. Eye witnesses from neighboring buildings all say it was only one guy. Protag/SK start looking into the big hitmen in the City, all of them say it was an out of towner. Hear rumors of some legendary hitman who was put into a mental institution for killing his entire 4th grade class with a hatchet. Track the rumors to the Metro (still trying to think of a name), another city in the area. Find the assassin, but accidentally kill him because Munk is not confident enough (hero's flaw) that he has the right guy. Learn that it was the killer when they recover the Boss's ring or something. Head back to the City to begin the search anew. End ACT I.

Except you apparently only chat during the day and mibbit is blocked at work, and everyone's quiet in the evening :?

Also, as a result of that conversation, I'm beginning to think that having both vampires and werewolves is unnecessary, and I think I'm going to drop the vamps entirely.
Now, I have:
Family is disturbed when the feds come knocking on their door to talk to their pre-schooler about the werewolves she considers her "friends" and the family had thought were all imaginary. When the feds' tactics become abusive toward the child, the family flees, and ends up hiding out with the very werewolf that the feds are hunting. They discover that he is innocent, and work to save him from being hunted down and executed like a rabid animal.

Behold, the IRC.

I forgot all about the sigs. They are essential - I was more interested in watching the progress bar on that thing than I was interested in my actual NaNo.org stats. And regarding the IRC, what time is the largest amount of people usually on? We've got a mere three idlers here at 6PM.

1. I'm starting SO DAMN LATE. I usually have at least some characters and an outline, but I'm late due to a new job warping my hours and working on another damn writing project.
2. I think I'm treating this too seriously. This time, I see trying to sell it, even if that ends up failing miserably. Too many were simply self-indulgent writing projects before.
Maybe I should just hit the IRC stuff for ideas on how to start. Or maybe I need to do some research. Anyone have a recommendation for a source on the demons of the Goetia, preferably one I can read quickly? I definitely need that. For my children's novel.
