What is anime?
Anime is animated entertainment produced primarily for the Japanese market. Don't give me some pedantic bull about anime being a transliteration of the French for animation thus we can discuss the new Spider-Man cartoon in this thread. Stick to Japanese stuff, even if technically it's all animated in Korea.

Is this the manga thread?
Yes, manga (Japanese comics) are also a main topic for the thread.

What else can we talk about?
Closely related subjects such as: novels, visual novels, art books, figurines and other knick-knacks, games, and live-action adaptations of anime or manga. There's a thread for "foreign films," so discuss the new Takashi Miike movie over there, unless it's adapted from an anime or something.

One Piece was so popular, it got a spin-off thread. All OP discussion should be directed there. Yo ho ho.

What is not ok to discuss?
Piracy, links to download sites (legal sites excepted, of course), drama, old worn-out bullshit from the last 100 threads, hentai (porn).
This is not the "LOLJAPAN" thread, don't come in here to dump every news article you come across detailing some perverse new form of craziness to come out of Japan. Every country is fucked up, Japan is just fucked in a very special way.

Old memes/bullshit: These topics have been done to death, they do not need to be discussed any further:
1) School Days
2) Western comics vs Manga
3) Whether or not Evangelion (original TV series) sucks. The new films, being new, are fair game.

Don't get offended when someone doesn't like your favorite show, or when someone does like a terrible show. Don't gang up on someone who has an unpopular opinion. That's the kind of crap that gets threads shut down.
ElJeffe wrote:
Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

Also, Clawshrimpy? Yeah, stay out of here. You've lost your anime thread privileges.

This should be your face while reading the anime thread:

If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.

Man, the second series is a blood bath so far, and did Suou kill Rocky? You see her shot hit his rock arm, but you never see what happened to him. Also, they absconded with July, and that's awesome...I think.

And Kirihara got the shit demoted out of her now, and she ignored Saito's ominous warning of foreshadowing, but he's an idiot anyways. But probably right this one time.

And I so called Mao being in Pecha. :D

Yea, its still pretty recent so it may be a bit longer before a box set appears. If it makes you feel any better, there's a Baccano box set coming at the end of the year.

Not watched the episode yet, but given Touma is featured to good effect in one of the first chapters (given your other comments on the episode and the preview I'm guessing we've not got there yet) that seems a correct assumption. That said the first arc (stopped reading the manga right before the end of it) is entertaining and actiony even without him, why they insist on putting all the unimportant shit into the start I don't know. Maybe the 2-cour rumors are correct and the manga plot isn't nearly enough for 24-26 episodes or something.

Henroid, when you get here, I've been meaning to ask you--

Where's your avatar from? It looks like Koyori from Nurse Witch Komugichan, but with red hair. I imagine it's the same character designer.

Watched the second episode of Michiko to Hatchin. I wish there were more people interested in it. I have a creeping suspicion that this is one of those shows that enjoys some success in Japan, but no one ever notices in the United States, potentially because it lacks manly passionate sky-punching/tears.

Not really. Stuff like Michiko and Baccano does relatively poorly in Japan for the same reason that high school anime does poorly in the US. It's a different culture which the audience has a hard time relating to/empathizing with.

Also, the drama in Michiko's first episode is so painfully over the top that I can see other reasons that it's not popular as well. Just to put all my cards on the table here.

The first time me and my friends watched the scene in Fate/Stay Night where Shiro and company hole up in the shed, we were like, "oh right, this was from an eroge, god look at this."

And then there was the CGI dragon and everyone was like "okaaaaaaaay..."

    Sister figure? check.
Younger female friend who worships him, and calls him sempai in that creepy whispery voice? check.
Summoned sexy being who he has the potential to command to do anything? check. (bonus points for her not caring if he walks in on her naked.)
Creepy little girl falling in his lap? check.
    It's got everything!
    You forgot Rider.

Also, Taiga occupies space that *would* in some other games be a path but (for all our sakes) isn't in F/SN.

    OHSHC truly is the greatest.
"Its obvious that in this romantic comedy, Haruhi and I are the main characters!"

    "Then who are we?"

"You two are obviously the homo side characters. So please don't cross this line."

Someone pointed it out, but thanks anyway.

I actually thought about watching it. I've avoided school romantic comedies like the plague since School Rumble (yes, I know, long shot), so I kind of wonder what I missed. Especially since everyone I know keep going on about them (Toradora included).

But they didn't show you the awesome clip it's from!

I'm no expert on romantic comedies, let alone anime. I don't know what School Rumble is, probably won't care to. Toradora was a completely random find (saw some YouTube video and decided to watch), and I think it was a good show. I haven't had many encounters like that, where something I've never heard of nor asked about turned out to be decent. I recommend it because it's Toradora, not because it's a romantic comedy.

Yeah...I can't really watch to many Rom Com myself(because of the tropes I mentioned last thread), but Toradora is one of the few I enjoyed.

Also, I think I'm going to have to wait until DtB gets further along before I watch it. I have to know why everything is going on the way it is.

I've heard a lot of good things about it, but mostly from people who eat up romantic comedy-type stuff (from Love Hina to Ouran), of which I know many, so I am wary. Pretty much the only romantic comedy I really liked was Ranma 1/2, and that was about fifteen years ago.

Love Hina, though a romantic comedy, is also a harem or whatever that category of anime is called. Toradora is not that. Love Hina also has a lot of extreme physical outtakes for comedy, like people scurrying up trees super fast or getting knocked into the air, that sort of shit. Toradora doesn't have that. It's got physical comedy, like people poking other people's eyes, but it more or less adheres to reality. I mean. As much as anime could, big-ass eyes and odd-color hair aside.

I enjoyed Toradora until the writers realized that they had to make an ending and then welp.

I sort of picked up on that, I was just citing examples of what was popular.

(Ouran, if you haven't seen it, is actually pretty much the same. Harem comedy. Physical comedy. Dramatics. Etc.)

See, I told you. Even though there was a drama explosion at the end, the writers managed to clean everything up for a satisfying ending.

I could have sworn I posted that many threads ago instead!

Anyhow, my main beef with the ending is how incredibly rushed the relationship was in the semi-final episode.

And heck, just the semi-final episode in general.

The last episode certainly could have been worse and they did the best with what they had considering the previous episode, but I still found it to be a pretty unsatisfying ending.

If you're looking for something else I would really pick up on Nodame Cantabile. It's more slice-of-life than romance, but I really enjoyed it. And the music was pretty good.

Spoilers to the whole series pretty much.
Two kids running away is supposed to feel rushed. Usually when you see that in stories, you know it's coming or they spend a lot of time planning it. That's what I liked about Toradora's use of it; it was, "Y'know what, I'm turning 18 in a couple months. Let's go hide somewhere and get married." And then they come around out of it. Taiga has character development throughout the series, and it's really clear after the Christmas episode that the way she treats Ryuuji is a farce for Minori's sake, which she drops when it comes down to it needing to.

    Everything that happens makes sense.

Romantic comedies. That's still one area I'll never give the light of day to. They're all the same nowadays. I'd give Ranma a chance if it wasn't for the fact that Rumiko Takahashi has a nasty habit of dragging her series on forever!

Oh, I don't disagree with you. That's why I don't watch them like I used to, but every now and then you get a relatively decent one.
