VLC fails hard with HD video and has zero hardware acceleration that both WMP & MPC HC have.

WMP 11 on Win7 comes with all the basic codecs you'll need for normal video playback. We're talking Divx/Xvid, mp4, VC-1, & of course H.264. One of the many problems with .mkv files are the people who make them doing their own weird thing instead of trying to follow standards or practices. So you'll need Haali Media Splitter which just happens to come in CCCP along with a per-configured version of MPC HC.

So I'm upgrading two of my PC's with windows 7 and that leaves me with a spare copy of Vista.

The problem is it is x64 and my third PC is x32.

Is there any way to "trade" the versions with Microsoft or otherwise get an x32 copy if you've only got an x64?

They're not the same thing like 7; the one I bought was only x64.

Your product key is always valid for both 64 and 32-bit as far as I know. You just need the disc.

Install it from a USB. It'll take like 15 minutes. Then you'll just have to install your video drivers and run Steam. You can do it!

I've got the Windows 7 Home Premium disks (32 and 64-bit DVDs) from retail.

What is the deal with licences?

Like, can I install it on one machine over and over again forever, or just three times on whatever machines I like, or what?

Can't seem to find it in the documentation. Cheers for any clarity.

So my two biggest questions remain unanswered:

    1. The best synch software that doesn't have a GB limit and syncs files between two PCs easily.

    2. How to get 7Stacks working.

So, mail! I imported my old Vista account into the new Mail program, but my mail isn't showing up. If I use the search bar, I can see that all of it is stored somewhere else (and I can read it), but it is not tied to my Live Mail account for whatever reason, so I can't get it to appear in the main screen. I figure there's a rather simple solution I'm missing?

You can set live mesh up to sync PC to PC only, and there is no limit. Anything you sync up to the cloud will have a 5GB cap.

Yea, it's touted as a pretty good feature, one that i used PC to PC. Sadly, I really wanted to use it PC to Mac, but the Live Mesh client for OS X didn't support the P2P sync, and now the Live Mesh app for OS X doens't even work with Snow Leopard, so meh.

I used the Release Candidate of Windows 7 from the day it was released until last Thursday when I installed the final version. The entire time I had the release candidate I didn't run into ANY problems at all.
Since installing the final, I've had nothing but problems. One of them may be ATI's fault. The computer went in and out of sleep mode fine before installing ATI's newest driver for Windows 7. The the display wouldn't wake from sleep. I've since uninstalled that driver and I'm using the one that Windows 7 installed.
After having to hit the reset button a few times to get it to come back up when not coming out of sleep, I now occasionally get a disk error when booting. Hell, sometimes the motherboard doesn't even see there's a drive there.
Maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe my drive just happened to shit the bed right when I was having these other problems. But tonight I'm going to try a full format, re-partition the drive, and reinstall Windows and see if that helps. If not I guess I'll have to replace the drive.

I'd have to go through my old credit card statements to make sure, but did anyone else have their credit card (or however else you purchased windows 7) charged when they downloaded it? I thought I was charged when I first purchased it, when I looked back, it looks like I wasn't. Weird.

Alright, so I installed my retail disk on my desktop this morning, and did much more extensive testing.

First thing I did was pop in the old XP disk and delete all the partitions on the hard drive, making it effectively brand new. After that, I loaded up the retail 7 disc and ran through the installation, setting up the new partitions. I got to the point where I needed to enter the key, and BAM! Key's not valid. Double check my spelling three or four times, and it's still not working. I just skip over that, and try it again when activating 7, and it still won't work.

So, I back out, reinstall the RC again, leaving the partitions how the were, but formatting the drive clean. After activating the RC, I back out and reinstall the retail disk again (for those counting, this is the third time installing an OS this morning), and now the key works.

So yes, the Upgrade disk does a clean, full installation (through the "Custom" installation option, instead of the "Upgrade" option), but you do need to have a previous installation on the drive before hand. But, the RC does count as a legitimate previous installation.

Can't say you're really helping anymore.

So a hard drive fresh from Newegg would require fiddling with the registry now?

I haven't been charged yet. I'm also not downloading it, due to the fact that my wifi is not all that reliable at the moment. However, I did get an e-mail stating that it was shipped, and that my card should now be charged...on Saturday. As of last night, still nothing.

Yep, it looks that way. But depending on how comfortable you are messing with the registry (I'm not, at all), it might be easier to just throw a previous OS on there first.

I know I'll be keeping the RC disc indefinitely now because of this.

If we're still taking about media players.. mplayer kicks the shit out of VLC. Assuming you're happy with a windows port of a linux command line tool.

  • iTunesIsEviliTunesIsEvil Registered User regular
Have VLC's or mplayer's WMV support gotten better? VLC used to be very "blocky" with horrible seeking issues. By blocky I mean that you'd get random (usually) green colored blocks all over the place on the picture.

Which also costs money now. And still needs codecs installed, which VLC doesn't.

Don't get me wrong - I liked Zoom Player, and used it for all my video on XP. But I'm just going with Media Player Classic on Windows 7.

It seems to be.. I haven't encountered a file that wouldn't play in a long, long time.

mplayer will even play password protected movies that windows media player won't.

With mplayer I haven't had issues with things being blocky except on very old WMV videos that were probably not encoded properly. Anything that's recent has played without a problem.

Sometimes it's just a container issue. Some codecs weren't made to be put inside of some of those old containers (AVI is a big culprit) and only "works" by the grace of some very ugly hacks, and they still don't support some of the excellent features codecs like H.264 supports (B-frames are a lot more useful than they were in Divx/Xvid). I've remuxed some problematic videos into a MKV and suddenly things are all kittens and rainbows :P

Disclaimer: pretty much all of my mplayer use is under Linux, but most of the underlying libraries are the same.

Windows mplayer is nice in the sense that it doesn't use any system libraries at all. You put a 'codecs' directory in the mplayer directory, drop the codec pack in there.. and shit just works.
