Look okay I can't help myself so here is my advice that I am tossing into the mix:
Not all of us are good at talking about ourselves. The words you choose should be a mix between something you'd say and something that doesn't get lost in translation. (For example, using big words might show off intellect, but use them in the wrong way and you come off as pompous... use them wrong, period, makes you come off as a poser.) You should leave little chance for misinterpretation—just because you know what YOU mean doesn't mean the reader is going to—while letting your personality show through your word choice and sentence structure. This balance is a skill that is worth learning as it applies in a variety of situations, but it does take practice.
Be succinct.
Write your profile with your goal in mind. Who are you trying to attract, and why? As I said before, if you're looking for any girl at all to show interest, write a profile that is more accessible and reveal unique points of your personality as you get to know each other. If you're looking to filter out the white noise and are looking to be matched with someone who shares key interests that you highly value, write something a bit more revealing and specific geared towards showing off those particular interests.
Prioritise your interests. Decide what's necessary for you to mention, and what's not... or how far into depth you should go into a particular subject. This will also help streamline your profile a bit.
I will say that the danger of writing something COMPLETELY generic and accessible also means you are not memorable, you don't stand out, and the only distinguishing features between you and the next guy are your looks, and that may not be something you want to be judged on even if you were a 10. So, make sure you throw some individuality in there, too.
Be proud of you who are. I'm not talking arrogance, I'm talking being able to talk about your interests with passion and conviction instead of worrying constantly about whether the interest is turning the girl on or off. It's passion that turns people on, not the interest itself. I always say that if you show how passionate you can be over something you like, you are also showing the girl that if she can get you to like HER, you will also be that passionate about HER... and this is a good thing.
List dislikes only insofar as you would not be interested at all in someone who had those dislikes. Keith made this point earlier and it's a good one. This also means you should not be petty with your selection in this part of the profile.
You are not interviewing for a job (where you trim down your skill list to what is applicable), you are showing people who you are. This means all facets of you should make at least a passing appearance, if not be the main focus.
Take a good picture. Goddammit. Seriously. Take a good picture.
Finally, remember that this is all two-way. If you're only sending message to cute or hot girls, expect girls to do the same, and if you're not cute or physically attractive enough for them, tough fucking titties.
