What is anime?
Anime is animated entertainment produced primarily for the Japanese market. Don't give me some pedantic bull about anime being a transliteration of the French for animation thus we can discuss the new Spider-Man cartoon in this thread. Stick to Japanese stuff, even if technically it's all animated in Korea.

Is this the manga thread?
Yes, manga (Japanese comics) are also a main topic for the thread.

What else can we talk about?
Closely related subjects such as: novels, visual novels, art books, figurines and other knick-knacks, games, and live-action adaptations of anime or manga. There's a thread for "foreign films," so discuss the new Takashi Miike movie over there, unless it's adapted from an anime or something.

One Piece was so popular, it got a spin-off thread. All OP discussion should be directed there. Yo ho ho.

What is not ok to discuss?
Piracy, links to download sites (legal sites excepted, of course), drama, old worn-out bullshit from the last 100 threads, hentai (porn).
This is not the "LOLJAPAN" thread, don't come in here to dump every news article you come across detailing some perverse new form of craziness to come out of Japan. Every country is fucked up, Japan is just fucked in a very special way.

Old memes/bullshit: These topics have been done to death, they do not need to be discussed any further:
1) School Days
2) Western comics vs Manga
3) Whether or not Evangelion (original TV series) sucks. The new films, being new, are fair game.

Don't get offended when someone doesn't like your favorite show, or when someone does like a terrible show. Don't gang up on someone who has an unpopular opinion. That's the kind of crap that gets threads shut down.
ElJeffe wrote:
Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

Also, Clawshrimpy? Yeah, stay out of here. You've lost your anime thread privileges.

This should be your face while reading the anime thread:

The Penny-Arcade All-Star Anime Recommendations List (click the title for a short synopsis):

Note that a thumbs up does not equal an incremental number for the quality of a given series or movie. It is merely the number of times people have recommended it. Also note that the main purpose of this list is to introduce anime viewers to lesser known titles, so please refrain from throwing a hissy fit if your favorite show doesn't get enough recognition, because odds are it's already well-known to the public. Basically, this is what happens if you take anime too seriously:

Just finished reading Biomega. Coming off Blame! the story is actually pretty coherent. I have a couple questions concerning the ending.
Who's the person in the end who talks to Reload? I feel like I should know this one but I don't quite have it.

Did Nishu and Higaide basically just disappear from the story entirely after the mid point?
    Good read.

I didn't quite like the pacing and thought it could of slowed down a lot in the end but the story itself I found pretty easy to follow. Blame I felt like I was getting lost in the final segments.

I suspect I might be the one "thumbs up" behind Michiko e Hatchin, but hey, it's better than nothing.

Additionally, I'm going to push a recommendation for another excellent police show, the Patlabor TV series and OVA, which are both excellent (having been directing by Mamoru Oshii). It's a comedy-drama, heavy on the comedy, mostly light on the drama, police show which, while on the older side, has aged very well (especially when compared to episodes of Ranma 1/2, which came out at the same time).

The opening theme is son unbelievably late-eighties that it out Eighties the whole series by far.

Hells yes, I love Patlabor. Never did see the third movie, but the synopsis sounds pretty lame anyway.

Hmm, are the OVAs even available on DVD?

Yes they are, along with the TV series. The third movie was Wasted Thirteen, right? Not bad--actually, quite good, compared to the third movies for a lot of other series--but very non-Patlabor in feeling, unlike the first and second movie.

So I got a new cable package about a month ago, and it has the Funimation channel.

Things I like: School Rumble and Ouran on at random times during the day.

Things I don't: The fact that this channel is so niche that Funimation doesn't show any of it's top tier shows because it wouldn't recoup the additional fee of airing them.

It wasn't supposed to be a popularity contest. The point was to create a diverse list of recommendations. Thus, a lot of good shows only got rec'd once or twice. I hope people don't start making rec lists just to give their favorite shows more "thumbs up". People could just go to myanimelist and sort by ranking for that.

Minami-ke series 3 done, OVA as well.

Season 3 was pretty decent aside from a few iffy bits in the middle and a couple segments that fell flat. The OVA was meh, though, and had some weird fanservice that turned me right off.

I just saw episode 6 and the fanservice has just been cranked up by 10000%. Still hilarious though.
