Spider inside of camera

jhunter46jhunter46 Registered User regular
My wife has a Canon Rebel XT...with a spider living inside it. It took the lens off and looked around the lens area and I can actually see the spider up inside the camera between the viewfinder and the casing. I'm not really comfortable taking it apart. How the hell do I get the bastard out?

Compressed Air? If you get the kind that doesn't leave moisture residue, I mean?

    Blast his ass out.

Or maybe see if you can get enough suction with a vacuum.

    Reverse-blast his ass out.

There are no holes around where it is at, I've looked at it from just about every angle I could. I'm not even sure how it got in there.

I guess we'll take it to a camera repair shop? It doesn't really need any repairs, just a quick disassemble and despidering.

Do not do this. Compressed air not operated 100% perfectly will mess your sensor up in a big way. Ditto on vacuuming.

You're probably looking at a professional cleaning anyway you slice it. Assuming there's some web-making going on in there, the camera will need a thorough de-silking even if you get the spider out yourself. If he's in behind the focussing screen, which isn't removable by the layperson on an XT, it'll take a technician just to get the spider out.

That said, you should shoot more.

I'm seconding this. Think of all the one of a kind shots you could get! Giant spider looming over your family portraits looking for a meal. Spider vs. dog. Spider hovering over the Grand Canyon. Spider crushing someones head. Spider typing on a computer. Spider playing piano. Endless possibilities.

Wouldn't the spider just end up looking like a blurry blob in the picture?

Sadly the spider isn't in front of the optic sensor, just in front of the sight, so no giant spider pictures.

If it's in the viewfinder, it wouldn't show up on pictures, would it?

But I can imagine the first time being discovered...

Oh what a great family photo op, here let me just raise the camera to my eye and focus this pic....

Hell, I would keep it. It must get out at some point to hunt.

I want to make some sort of joke about a flycam but it's just not coming to me.

I called a local camera shop, the guy kinda laughed at me but he said if it is just a matter of taking the casing off and removing that piece of plastic they'd do it for no charge. I'm going to send my wife over there this afternoon.

  • WillethWilleth Registered User regular
Take a few test photos once you get it back to ensure that it doesn't need a clean. Top drawer of the camera shop guy to do it for free, though.

How the hell do you figure the spider get in there anyways? I keep my camera body sealed at all times, either by a lense or by a cap.

So does she, she loves that camera more than me.

It wasn't born in the camera, she's had it a few years. We did take it camping about two months ago, so maybe it got in then. I have no fucking clue. How long can spiders live without eating?

My wife took the camera to the shop yesterday, the guy had it apart and pulled the spider out with some scotch tape. It looks like it left some webbing around the viewfinder. They said if it has any trouble focusing to bring it back and they can completely disassemble and clean it.
