Mostly it is that there are easier ways of obtaining information besides reading books or periodicals.

I mean I love reading and a lot of us are really emotionally invested in it.

And also we are kind of a reading subset based on the fact that we have a relatively long-form text-based forum that we are all members of for some of our our social/ information association.

But really we need to wonder what fundamentally books offer that cannot be subsumed by more modern media.

I mean, for one thing, they don't offer direct corporate control over what we can and can't read on our new doohickeys.

Or the inherent irony of the Amazon Kindle 'accidentally' deleting George Orwell's 1984 from the Kindles of people who had paid for it.

That isn't what happened and you should know better.

At the risk of sounding combative, what did happen?

I would like to know better.

Amazon was caught selling books that they didn't have the right to sell and the copyright holder was none too pleased.

    Thanks for clarifying that.

Why didn't they just leave the copies on the Kindles and force Amazon to refund them anyway and pay the copyright holder?

It still creeps me out. At what point does the transaction end? You don't have booksellers coming around to peoples' houses to take back all the first editions of Lord of the Rings because they just realized they didn't have the right to sell them.

I saw this thread and thought about posting something about the general dumbing down of popular culture, and then I realised there has been someone at the end of every decade, of every century, to have the same thought.

So yeah. This decade has been weird. It's the age of the internet. Like on the one hand, you have 4chan, and on the other you have wikipedia. Growing up, I don't think I could imagine a tool where you could look up literally anything in your own house, without living in a library. Disregarding its sometimes fluctuating accuracy for a second, just as a concept, it's fucking amazing really.

This decade is when Hollywood realized it could 're-imagine' any IP and expect us to pay up like a cash piñata.

Also, this decade made us realize that our long strides in technology will be hampered by the old regime trying to keep their outdated business practices relevant and hedging on safe bets.

Source: Fake Steve Jobs: A not-so-brief chat with Randall Stephenson of AT&T

Goddamn this idea that there is some "old regime" resisting modern technology pisses me off to no end.

People glorify some slightly newer tech companies because men in jeans and t-shirts do their press conferences, and they speak in hip language instead of business terms. Google is an evil information-gathering firm as has ever existed on this planet, yet there are large swathes of the "in" crowd on the internet who worship the very ground they walk on because they released some token open-source shit.

There is no concerted conspiracy by old men in top hats to hold back technological progress. Youtube is just a website where people post the most inane shit ever. Oh yeah, and Youtube takes creative control over everything you post. Some voice of the fucking people.

The P2P network enrages me even more - the community hosts the absolute dregs of the internet - people who would crack Microsoft's FREE* tool for LEO's to quickly grab information off a computer from a suspected pedo, and release a counter-program to the entire internet to protect pedos everywhere. These are people who brag about stealing movies and music and games. They are thieves and scum.

So looking back on the efforts of the "in" crowd to demonize the ISPs while glorifying the Googles and Apples of the world - take a step back and literally fuck your own face. You're trading a banal, regular corporate evil with a much more insidious, controlling and destructive force.

*This gives me near-seeing red levels of rage. MS produced a free product out of the goodness of their hearts for LEOs to use, because not every fucking cop is a computer expert (having to focus on things like arresting people, looking for evidence, talking people down, shooting people, etc.) and allowed beat cops a reasonably good chance at capturing the important evidence from a suspected pedo's computer. Hackers turned around and said OH HO HO MICROSOFT, Bazinga. Piggies, l2computersz kekekakakalulz

Historically, it's more likely meant to limit the spread of the Linux-based tools for the same purpose. This is what MS does and has done through its entire existence.

This could probably have its own thread.

    I guess
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Even when all you've ever learned is 'If you can, you should before someone else does.'

Either you love Microsoft or you're in favour of pedophilia? Yeah, that makes sense.

And I can't think of anything redeeming about Disney's continual copyright extensions. A child born today will die from old age before a work published when he was conceived enters the Public Domain.

This decade I got canned from a job of 5 years, wife got knocked up by another guy, got divorced, fought for custody of my kids through court representing myself and won, met and married my new wife, and moved a total of 4 times (my kids had to move a total of 9 times because of their mom's instability).

I graduated from high school, went to college for CS, almost flunked out. I changed to international studies and added a history major to that. Moved to Japan and taught English for 3 years. Got a bad case of Crohn's and have had 1 planned and 1 emergency surgery and had to move back with my parents.

In this decade I lost one of my best friends a week before I hit 21. Also went to Europe, Prague and had a blast.

In general it has been a mixed decade with some good and some shit.
