My APUSH teacher, Mr. Beatty, is the most wonderful, most inspiring teacher I've ever had.

Dude has a fucking passion for teaching his subject, and even though it's an AP course and history at that, not one person in the class has less than a B.

Anyway it's not schools that are failing, it's culture and society more generally.

I was watching some news blip from newshour the other night about the D.C. schools and they were mentioning how most kids at this one high school had a third grade reading level.

Really unless you have some sort of substantial learning disability not being able to read after nine years or so of compulsory education means that there's something wrong with values.

    I love you.

Yeah, there are shitty teachers. But there are shitty people in every profession. I hate to see teachers get blamed for students' lack of motivation and effort.

I used to hear, "Teachers should make school more fun."

Goddammit, they're not there to make sure you have "fun". They are there to teach your ass.

In fairness there are a lot of people who seem to become teachers just because it's the easiest way of being given responsibility over other people. I've dated a few! (That's mostly why I don't date teachers anymore Jesus H. Christ.)

I think we should pick up a few things from the Japanese system

Like you know how you aren't supposed to know anybody's grade? Fuck that noise. Take the grades and put everyone's grade, ranked, from top to bottom, in 50 point print on the gym wall.

This was my high school calculus class.

Mrs. Moulder loves her job. She loves what she teaches. So she's really good at it.

The same with my AP Euro class.

It's clear that this won't be news to any of you, but you can't point your finger at any one place when it comes to the problems with the American educational system, unfortunately. Standardized testing, state requirements for curricula, teachers' unions, and the current (baffling) social/cultural trend away from valuing intellectualism are all interconnected and partially at fault.

A teacher gave me a b instead of a c in ninth grade so I could play football because my grades were shitty back then

When I stopped playing football my grades got better

I'll have more than enough credits to graduate after this year so I get to play football again and it won't matter if my senior year is fucked off!

I would have NEVER guessed this.

I want to be a history teacher because I get excited talking/hearing people talk about it and I've seen students who couldn't give a shit about anything get legitimately interested in learning about our past because of good teachers.

I wanna be that good community college teacher!

But then again I like engineering because learning and getting the hang of that stuff is so satisfying and it's challenging and interesting and, well, much more hopeful job-wise.

    I want the world.

When I say sixth year senior, I meant that the student had been there for six years. Not a senior for six years.

Sorry, colloquial term. Should've been more clear.

Our coach used to make us stay after practice an extra hour to do homework together if we had anything below a 75% in any given class. The coaches that were teachers would stay and help with what they could. This was his policy, by the way, not our school system, or our school.

Don't let her influence where you go to school.

    It's not worth it.

Yuss this, I was just about to mention this.

I'd like to see it become acceptable and even encouraged to look at trade schools instead of completing high school or more-or-less mandatory college, like we have now. We need to place value back upon having skilled tradesmen and craftsmen. Thousands of young idiots running around with degrees in Communication? Why not encourage people to go where their aptitudes lead them? Some people are just not suited to higher education, and there should be viable alternatives to pursuing it - by which I mean something other than a funny hat and a chair at a drive-thru window.

I'm going to (maybe) get a degree in CIT with a specialization in networking. Then get a whole bunch of certifications. And then probably make a decent living.

    That's the plan anyway.

We had some bullshit drama at our school with the coaches

Two of the basketball coaches, Lord and Kato, got in a fight in front of the basketball team. Kato got fired, which pissed a lot of the coaches off, because Lord started it, so Chou (the head football coach) resigned to make a statement, and since he had won us two championships in a row, he thought he'd get the position right back. He did not.

So there was a scramble to find another football coach and we've gone through two now and both years since Chou quit we've sucked ass and Chou is just back as a p.e. teacher now

But we have coach Pierce this year and he has a wonderful record so we're all super excited and none of you care about this but if you do then wooooo eagle rock high school football rules
