Presently I am on 2 god damned claritin and a cold and sinus just for laughs. I'm about to take a nighty night time allergy relief pill just to end this hell so that I may begin it again tomorrow.

So, the pills obviously do nothing, anyone know any crazy allergy remedies? I am not afraid of a little voodoo or tiger penis-tea if that's what it takes, I just am so completely done with this sneezy sniffling dopey-doc bullshit. Do they make hypoallergenic tissues? Something, anything, would be helpful.

An Advil Cold and Sinus normally would clear me up enough to fall asleep. Though honestly you may be stuck just waiting it out, its a living hell I know mine just went away and thank god it did I was sick of that.

This is going to sound crazy, but inhaling warm saltwater will clear you right up.

I recommend doing this in the shower, and really, it's hella not worth it if you're only having minor problems.

You should also talk to your doctor, see if you can get a prescription for Allegra, or some other allergy medication; just because one doesn't work doesn't mean others won't.

Maybe your primary care doctor can refer you to an allergy specialist, I work for one and there are so many different allergy medications out there that I'd be surprised if none of them worked. Also, there's allergy immunotherapy. I suffer from pretty bad allergies myself, but shots are helping, as is taking Allegra and Singulair.

I have allergies year 'round to something, but I don't notice them if I take my generic version of allegra every day or so. I would also suggest looking into it. I'm currently on the generic version, fexofenadine. Which I think is spelled wrong.

Go see an allergist. I get terrible allergies during springtime and going to one definitely alleviated most of my symptoms.

Snorting saltwater? Genius. I think I've heard that before, I will give it a go. I haven't had allergies this bad since I was 12; the past few weeks have been really bad around here pollen-wise. I'll look into fexofenadine (you spelled it right) as well.

Now I have to go snort saltwater and/or snot all over perfect strangers at the airport. Hooray.

    Thanks all

If OTC things aren't working for you, go see a doctor, it could be a sinus infection and if that's the case, they're going to put you on stronger meds.

This happened to me awhile ago and it just wouldn't go away, the doc put me on some penicillin and other junk and I was better within three days.

Are you just congested? If so, you could always pick up a bit of mentholated nasal snuff (yes, it's tobacco). Gletscher Prise is a good one. That stuff will clear you right out.

you can get a bottle of saline solution, specifically for shooting up your nose.

hold it upright to mist it up your nose, or if you REALLY wanna saturate your mucus membranes you can lay down and stream/squeeze drops in there.

sadly for me during my worst even zyrtec doesnt do a good enough job anymore :(

They have this stuff at Walgreens I believe and it fucking works miracles. Seriously, its an amazing saline rinse system. Go out and buy it.

Everyone in my extended family that has tried it sings its praises.

Man evolution is great. Humans are so advanced now we're even allergic to nature. Fucking nature.

I get it pretty bad too, good luck getting it cleared up.

If you have down pillows, replace them with synthetic fibre ones. Same with any other bedding... down releases microscopic particles that play hell on allergies. If you have an old mattress, consider replacing it or wrapping it in plastic; all kinds of horrible allergens get trapped in mattresses. Get a HEPA filter (they're ~$150 at Costco) and stick it in your bedroom. They're pretty low maintenance... you have to open it up and vacuum out the pre-filter every once in a while, and you might have to vacuum out the main filter once in a great while. Make sure you do this outside, so you don't let all of the nasty dust and allergens back into your room again. Also, make sure the kleenex you're using doesn't give off dust, which just makes things worse.

If you have a lot of knick-knacks and figurines in your house / room, you might want to put the majority of them away during allergy season. They have lots of little nooks and crannies where dust can collect. Hit the surfaces in your house with an attachment vacuum every week or so. Venetian blinds, bookcases, monitors, etc... are all huge dust magnets, and need to be cleaned off regularly. Wear a dust mask while you work, or you'll aggravate your allergies further. If the vacuum kicks up too much dust, consider using a damp rag instead.

Sinus irrigation is a must if you're really feeling bad. It washes allergens out of your sinuses, and heals dry, irritated sinus membranes. Make sure you blow everything back out again, though, so you don't have little pockets of contaminated saline left in your sinuses. Shower every time you come into the house; showering washes off any pollen you might have picked up outside, and the heat and steam helps loosen congestion.

This might sound weird, but incorporate more garlic and onion into your diet. If you really want to get crazy, stinging nettle is a widely-used naturopathic remedy for allergies. All three help strengthen and regulate the immune system. You can get freeze dried stinging nettle in capsule form. I've never had any side effects from it, although you probably shouldn't take it on an empty stomach. I also took homeopathic allium pills for a couple of summers (basically, onion pills), although they didn't really have a consistent impact on my allergies.

Finally, if you have any kind of pain in your sinuses, or constant pressure, or if your teeth or eyes inexplicably hurt (especially if they throb), or if anything green comes out, you probably have a sinus infection; go to the doctor and get antibiotics.

This might sound odd but I have heard that consuming honey produced locally is supposedly effective in building one’s resilience to allergies, logic following that the local pollens that are incorporated into the honey helps build one's tolerance to the same pollens that are giving you hell.

No, not even in the top 3 symptoms. Sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes then congestion. Apart from the wicked headache I had Saturday, its not even something I'd complain about.

You may well be my hero. I looked for something like this but at CVS all I noticed was decongestant spray.

Oh, I absolutely do, good sir. Stinging nettles aplenty. A good air filter would seem a reasonable purchase as well.

Come on, that can't possibly work. But shit, I guess I can choke down a few peanut butter + honey sandwiches for science.

So between Allegra, Zyrtec, nettles, honey, air filters, and saline spray; I think I have enough weaponized theories for allergy season to vanish without giving me a chance to try them. But I'm pretty ok with that too. Thanks again, or for the very first time, whichever you prefer.

Well Eastern Europe, Japan, and NPR can't be wrong. And the way I have heard it is people either take it in teaspoon form or in tea. But make sure to buy the clear runny honey, not the crystallized stuff and if you can get it on the honey comb then all the better (so long as you eat the honey with the honey).

At any rate please talk to a doctor before you spray water up your nose. Well that is what I would do anyway.

I had injections for about 5 years to desensitise me to the main allergens that were affecting me. It worked really well. I've gone from taking antihistamines every day to only taking them occasionally.

One thing I found when I was taking the pills every day is that the effects wear off after a few months of taking them. After a few months of taking Zyrtec, it stopped having an effect, and I had to switch to a different brand (with different active ingredients). Now I'm only taking the pills occasionally, so it's not so bad, but I still switch brands a few times a year.
