I'm going to be in a Chinese hospital for about a week for surgery and all i'll have to entertain myself is a new Macbook. What are games, apps, and other things I should look into to entertain myself with?

Machinarium, if you're into point and click adventures.

That and... I dunno, starcraft I guess? I don't really play games on my computer.

Popcap has some great ones. And you can try before you buy.

Plants vs Zombies was a really good time sink for me. In fact....

Dwarf Fortress runs, and Funguy can purchase a cheap USB numpad for his Mac (like I did back while I was in China.) Other than bootcamping into Windows, you could install Ultima VII via Exult and DosBox has an OS X port. Oh, and Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe does as well.

Because Dwarf Fortress has a terrible user interface and uses the numpad at the same time as the keyboard. If you don't want the (about 100 RMB) add-on to make your life easier you have two options: spend an afternoon going through the configuration file remapping the keys or constantly switch between the numpad mode and keyboard mode on the laptop.

One more recommendation, check out Battle for Wesnoth.

I'm surprised no one joking said "Puzzle" and "Photoshop"

Will you have wifi access? There are a million flash games, some of my favorite being at www.physicsgames.net

If you won't have connectivity, then you can even download the swf files beforehand if you're a little savvy...

Oh, and good luck with your surgery!
