Infection mode is Amazing. Seriously Amazing. After I played it once it was the only gametype I played the rest of the night.
Predator hunt is ok, but a little slow.
Survivor is really chaotic and captures the feel of the movies. There are only two maps for it now, so that kind of sucks. But it is really a blast.
Also, the multiplayer map "Temple" is genious. The whole map shifts and changes just like the temple from the AvP movie. I played a Species Deathmatch game as a marine in that map. I actually got cut off from the rest of my team because a wall popped up between me and my friends. Scared the crap out of me.
"This place is all dark and I keep hearing screams and deaths. I am so glad we have each other's backs. Right guys? .... guys?"
/Turns around and sees a wall where there used to be a hallway.
"great."
If the PS3 online is anything like the updated demo, then it should be fine. Lately, I've never had to wait much more than a minute for the matchmaking to put me in a game. And if worst comes to worst, you can always browse for a game to join.
That sounds really neat. I'll look forward to playing that map.
Also, in multiplayer, as a Predator I can't use focus mode. Which means I can't get most of the pred weapons, or pred jump (which is super useful). Quite frustrating, and weird, as I had no issue like that in the demo.
One big gripe; predator hunt is a huge, huge dissapointment. The maps are small as fuck, you're timed on getting kills as predator, and you have to find weapons to use. Basically, it's stacked as fuck, it's extremely easy for marines to constantly kill the pred. I consider myself to be a good predator player, and even for me it was impossible to keep a good killstreak with the time limit and the fact that the marines have the sensor so they know what direction you're in when you're even remotely close.
I'm still waiting for the predator hunt Crysis mod where a group of marines have to complete an objective while moving across a huge map, and the Pred hunts them as they do it, with limited respawn on the marines.
P.S.: add fathom to your steam friends for AVP online PC
Any more opinions on it? It's the mode I want to play the most.
It might be fun in the right level with the right size group and the right people. But usually it just ends up that the Pred gets killed fast without scoring and you almost never see him anyways
i was doing very well as a predator in a species DM though, that is where his tactics shine. i would find my weapon, cloak, and wait for the sound of gunfire.
then i'd find where the action was and sit perfectly still. if i had the discs it was guaranteed 2 kills, combi stick atleast one. i also find that the vision modes are very much distracting a times so i leave it in the normal view.
the only campaign i've started is the human, which is pretty fun and scary so far. i started on hard which may have been a mistake, i died several times during 'the party'
Getting selected as the 1st alien is horrifying and exhilarating at the same time.
gah i hate to do this on page 100, but i'm having the exact same issue on the 360 for a little more info, check spoiler for marine campaign, tequila event.
Game runs with the DX9 client, however exiting the game causes me to have to re -verify the integrity- other wise I get "Game is unavailable".
-watching the steam forums for updates on similar cases and outcomes-
I have the PS3 version and so far having 0 problems finding games.
I love the game so far. The marine campaign really catches the flavour of the second movie Aliens and the sound effects are dead on.
Multiplayer is also awesome. Favorite mode so far is Infestation but Team Species DM runs a close second. Pred Hunt is also a blast but is better played with less people than the other modes.
The game has a real "old school FPS" vibe to it while at the same time feeling "fresh" compared to all the modern FPS's out there (specifically talking about Alien and Predator gameplay).
Playing as an Alien I almost got a Splinter Cell Pandora's Box vibe (multiplayer part).
You obviously haven't gotten to a smartgun yet.
The only way I can see a pred succeeding on it is if the marine team is absolutely stupid and everyone goes off on their own, but that never happens and as long as 3 are in a group you're screwed. They can see you on the sensor when you get even reasonably close for a kill. The only way to get a kill off without dying outright is disc or combistick, and even then if they have a smartgun or sniper rifle you won't re-cloak and get away in time. Not on PC at least, it's probably different on consoles.
I can see an overall time limit, but for killing as the Pred?
You get 40 seconds once you spawn as Pred, and the time limit increases per kill. It forces you to be fast and usually wreckless, which is the exact opposite of what the game-mode should be. I guess they assume every gamer has ADHD and if something is not exploding at least once every 20 seconds they lose interest. I don't know. It's fucking stupid. The size of the maps is probably even worse, though. There just isn't enough variations in the ground and height for the predator to really take advantage of.
They actually explain a few of the differences in that the weapons tech has advanced about half a century since you saw them in Aliens.
Edit: AvP2 had some fantastic maps for Predator hunting, like Verloc, Outpost and Compound. The best ones for Survival (Infestation in this game) were Alley, Colony and Quarantine.
I will miss those maps.
Wait. 40 seconds to find a decent weapon, get to that location, get to a vantage point, close in, then kill? So kill number one is just blitz for a trophy kill just to get enough time on your next spawn?
That
What? I can't fathom how this was a good idea.
Chicago, IL - NetherRealm Studios - My views are my own and don't represent WB or NR.
It surprised the hell out of me when the map opened up after a certain wave. I thought we'd be stuck at the end of that hallway forever, mowing down wave after wave of bugs.
How many times can I tell my group that all I need to know is where. they. are?
Back when I used to play Predhunt on AvP2 it was always a team of marines fighting a couple of predators, 3 rarely, but sometimes. Never more than that.
With teamwork the Predators were able hunt in packs, it made for some real intense games.
I hope some servers will evolve that are just Species Deathmatch between a limited number of predators and a handful of Marines. I had one round of it on the demo, 2 Preds vs 4 Marines. It was hella fun. I chased one predator around a corner with a flamethrower but his ally dropped down from the rafters and pulled my spine out. Scared me shitless - I had a great time.
The Hunter Edition maps (two Survivor maps) are suppose to be released a month later as paid DLC, I believe.
I just hope they're bigger than the ones included with the game. Even after the one you described opened up, it was still very small.
The front page of my steam shows aliens vs predator as available now. But when you click it, it shows there's 52 hours left. What a tease. Being able to at least preload now would be nice.

I think it was to prevent people from getting one kill or getting into the lead as the Predator, then hiding in a really high unreachable place and just staying there, not moving, until the end of the game. The idea is sound, it just could have been implemented better.
As far as fixing the mode goes, all Pred spawns in Predator Hunt need to be out of sight/reach of the marines. Also, if there are more than 8 people in the room, there need to be two predators. I think that would allow the predators to be a bit more sneaky and employ stealth tactics.

Blocking seems to be holding both lb and rb at once. If I'm attacked with a light attack and I block it, I can counter, I think, with a light attack, correct? Also, if an alien is winding up with a heavy attack, and I use a light attack during the wind up, will that stun the alien each time if I land the attack? It seemed to be so most of the time, but other times not so sure. When one of your own attacks is blocked, what's the best counter to that? Just come right back with a light attack, or use a heavy to break the block?
One more question....when an alien grabs you for a finisher, do you hold or just tap lb at the right time to break it? I was prompted to hit lb the first time I was grappled, but it flashed by rather quickly and I never could tell what I was supposed to do...I wound up just flailing wildly with both bumpers until I escaped, which seemed to work.
Anyway, very satisfying to lure marines away from their buddies with distract, then finish them with a claw to the chest.
Also temple is the best fps map I have ever seen. That is all.
Other than that, be careful (block when necessary, etc.) and don't waste time on aliens that are "dead but crawling"
anyone else make it far enough in the marine campaign to give me help here.
Posting on page 101 feels exotic.
I was just about to do the same. I will leave it to you
