Mass produced chocolates are all HFCS in the United States, but there are a lot of artisan chocolatiers out there now. It is similar to the American beer situation, people complain about how terrible Budweiser is when they could be having seasonal microbrews instead.

Has this been brought up in the thread?

How do you plan on getting Kinder Eggs through homeland security checkpoints?

They are on the watchlist as contraband that is not allowed into the United States and it is a specific question that border agents ask when coming into the country.

I really mean it when I said they ask. A friend just came back from a couple country Europe trip and one of the questions they asked him at the gate was "Are you bringing back any Kinder Eggs?"

Check this link out and look at what the #1 confiscated item by customs is:

Not that I am in any way trying to get this store in trouble, but for those of you attending PAX prime a store in the Pike Place Market was selling Kinder Eggs. I picked up a couple at PAX 09 (along with a certain nasty bug).

Also considering whether asking for a Mars bar or two is a good idea, the thing they call a mars bar over here.... <shudder> it has nuts in it!

WOW thats pretty weird that anyone would care if i have a kinder egg in my bag. I mean kinder eggs were only banned because of some bs fda rule that said you cant have non food items enclosed in food items. Well i say bring them in at your own risk i guess.

As for Kinder Eggs, i would have thought that US Customs people would have bigger things to worry about than Kinder Eggs, and Trion, groan, dreadful pun!

The Mars Bar is available in the US but they are called, wait for it, Milky Ways. Having said that, the UK variant is somewhat sweeter than the American one.

If anyone in the US is curious, we can bring over UK Milky Ways as well, but they are not like the ones you have in the 'colonies'. They can best be compared to 3 Musketeers bars only much sweeter. The taste is all based on the use of real suger, as has been stated earlier on in this thread.

Just as an aside, when I was at PAX '09 I did go into a grocery store with some follow attendees to get some supplies. I couldn't help but be a little surprised over the lack of choice with regards to sweets/candy there was there compared to the UK. Anyone know why this is?

I find that grocery stores tend to be hit or miss with their candy selection. Most of it is by the cashier's for impulse buyers, but it means they have a limited selection and it's annoying to get to when there are lines. For regular stores, I find that drug stores like Duane Reade, Rite Aid, etc tend to have the best selection outside of specialty stores.

As a displaced Brit (been living in the US for over 8 years now) I also find the lack of chocolate variety disturbing, you can get a wider selection in different locations. US chocolate seems to like adding nuts and peanut butter a little bit too much for my taste. The white Kit Kat was about briefly but seems to have disappeared.

As for US Milky Way being like a UK Mars bar, I say nay, tis like comparing Californian 'champagne' to French champagne, nowhere near the same league.

Symphony Mart sounds awesome, I will definitely be checking them out.

Even in my mid west location we get creme eggs around Easter time, they start selling them a little after the start of the year and stop right after Easter. I always pick up a bunch of them on sale after Easter to stock up for the rest of the year. Cadburys Diary Milk can also be picked up at Walmart here.
