WELCOME TO THE JAPANIMATION THREAD!

nerdsnuggle.jpg

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is one of the best shows you've possibly not watched due to prejudices and you are a worse off person because of it.

"But Spectrum", you say, "magical girls?"

whatiwatched-resized.jpg

Trust me.

"I heard it starts slow."

Yes, it does. But...

nanohaepisodequality.png
(Look, I have a chart! I can't possibly be lying to you!)

If you can't put up with 4 episodes before things start getting awesome, I don't know what to tell you. If you have a particular understanding of the magical girl genre, you may even find those first 4 episodes amusing. (May.)

"All right, all right, I give up already. Tell me about the series."

Franchise, really. But anyway...

Nanoha is the story of one girl who unlocks her magical potential because of a dire threat to her home. Unlike other magical girls, she realizes that hey this is kind of awesome and takes to it like a fish to water.

That's good, because Nanoha's first opponent is her:

fate2-resized.jpg

"Is that...?"

Yes, dear reader. Our darling Fate is indeed wielding an energy scythe. And she knows how to use it.

So that's Season 1.

(Season 1 has a Sound Stage, also known as a Drama CD, but it's kind of hard to find and I've not the translations for it, so we'll leave it out.)

"There's more?"

Would I be this fanatical if there were only one season? (...on second thought, don't answer that.)

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's is the second season and, as my previous infallible graph shows, is made of pure distilled win. It takes the high energy from the last season and keeps right on going.

vita-grafeisen1-resized.jpg

fatesignum2-resized.jpg

"...want."

Season 2 has both a Sound Stage and a Manga volume, which run concurrently with the anime. They mostly provide background detail and some additional character development.

But wait...there's more!

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS is the 3rd season. It timeskips 9 years after the end of Season 2. It's about passing down one's skills, team combat, still being awesome, and has hints of intriguing politics.

"...huh. Okay, so what does that give us?"

That gives us this:

nanoha4-resized.jpg

and

fate3-resized.jpg

And as before, plenty of awesome new characters like these two:

subaruginga-faceoff-resized.jpg

StrikerS has a concurrent 2 volume or so manga, which technically leads in straight from A's and is somewhat important in terms of setting things up, but isn't strictly necessary. It, like Season 1 and A's, also has a concurrent Sound Stage which is more character development, but is somewhat more ignorable.

"Wow Spectrum, that's alot of..."

I'M NOT DONE YET.

Right.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS - Sound Stage X
This is a Sound Stage that takes place roughly two years after the end of StrikerS. This one, unlike the others, is significant plot wise and can be considered sort of a Season 3.5. It's also far easier to find, either to listen to or just to get translations for.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViViD
One half of "Season 4", this is a currently running manga centered around the new life of a character introduced in StrikerS roughly 4 years after the end of Season 3. It is utterly adorable.

Mahou Senki Lyrical Nanoha Force
The other half of "Season 4", this is also a currently running manga. Taking place 6 years after the end of Season 3, it is thus far much darker. (Note the change in title, Magical War Force as opposed to Magical Girl.)

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 1st
A retelling of Season 1, possibly cutting out the boring/mundane/ordinary first 4 episode material. I haven't seen it personally yet, as it's not been subbed. It also has its own manga series.

Overall, the series's main themes are parental abandonment, maturity, friendship, family, HARD WORK, thinking [strike]with portals[/strike] intelligently, and doing bad things for ostensibly good reasons. It has its comedic moments, its surprisingly dark moments, its completely and utterly heartwarming moments, and lots of FUCKAWESOME action.

The Nanoha series has produced plenty of collectible merch, if you are of a mind to care for such a thing.
th_Nanoha1.jpgth_Nanoha2.jpg
[tiny]oh god so much money spent but it was all worth it[/tiny]

And hey, like everything else, it too has one of those fancy alignment charts:
(spoilers abound)
alignments.png

Also, as a last benefit, the music for the series is, like everything else, awesome. All of the OPs and most of the insert songs are sung by the esteemed Mizuki Nana, Fate's seiyuu. The EDs are sung by Tamura Yukari, Nanoha's seiyuu.

If you must, you can also discuss other awesome animation of an eastern variety here. Or manga, if you like. Or visual novels. Or even the soundtracks, OPs, and EDs. Not doujin games, though, as we have another thread for that. And not One Piece, either, as we also have a thread for that.

And now, a word from our malevolent overlords:
ElJeffe wrote:
Hi, I'm ElJeffe! You might know me from such mod actions as cleaning up gold-farming spam and jailing the fuck out of people. Today I'm here to talk to you about your new anime thread.

This is to be your new home for the next 100 or so pages. Here, you may discuss anime and things related to anime and whatever the fuck else people who are into anime do. Of course, hentai is beyond the scope of this thread, and anyway, what the fuck is wrong with the people who dig that shit, I mean seriously?

What you will not engage in here is retarded drama and bitching and whining. If you want retarded drama, go watch Desperate Housewives or Wife-Swap or something. This is to be a happy thread full of happy commentary. If I have to lock it for the same stupidity that raped the last incarnation, the anime thread will not be coming back.

Also, Clawshrimpy? Yeah, stay out of here. You've lost your anime thread privileges.

Right, so on that note...

Alternatively, you can head on over to MyAnimeList and create yourself a profile. Then, join the PA Group for Judging Others and use the List of PA Handles thread to figure out who's who. If you put what you've watched into your profile, you can then get a comparison between yourself and another poster and see how well your tastes match up!

On the other hand, you may find yourself looking for a broader perspective.

In that case, why not take a gander at...

The Penny-Arcade All-Star Anime Recommendations List:
(credit goes to Chen for original compilation)

Note that a thumbs up does not equal an incremental number for the quality of a given series or movie. It is merely the number of times people have recommended it. Also note that the main purpose of this list is to introduce anime viewers to lesser known titles, so please refrain from throwing a hissy fit if your favorite show doesn't get enough recognition, because odds are it's already well-known to the public.

I think the thing that really sells me on this series is the artwork. The story is also usually very good, even though it does use some cliches, it usually ends up using them in a fairly creative way.

The Otome Game part was hilarious.

Which have been your favorite girls so far?

I would say Tenri/Diana and Ayumi are favourites. The pilot chapter was so good that Ayumi is really stuck in my mind. Some runner ups would be Jun, Chihiro and Kanon.

On another note a new Aoi Hana chapter. Yay it's been months.

Baka Test is like a concentrated flashback to when that was the only type of anime I ever watched. In a good way. If that makes any sense.

I really want to want to give Nanoha another try.

It's been a long time, so I can't remember all of their names, but Ayumi is defintely awesome.

I liked Librarian, Karate-girl, and Nagase (the teacher) a lot.
Although, to be honest, I don't think there are any I dislike.

The only arc I felt was a little weak was perhaps Tsukiyo's (the telescope girl that shrunk) but even that was pretty alright. I don't really dislike any of the girls either. This is definitely my favourite harem series currently. Capture god fuck yeah.

To be perfectly honest my OP would just make the anime thread a G Gundam thread. Talking about other weeaboo stuff? That's a paddling.

I bet it would still make it to 100 pages.

I've been a big Cross Game booster almost since the start :P Just haven't been watching much anime at all recently.

The worst part was getting 10 minutes into ep 33 and realizing I'd never watched ep 32 fffffffffffff

It was most excellent. Although, they did that annoying thing where they ruin a nice moment with a comedy beat to close the episode. Cross Game writers, you are better than that get it together!

I'm torn between blasting through all the remaining episodes in marathon style and rationing them out over a longer time. What a dilemma.

I saved them for the marathon but now I have to wait and it kills me.

But it's almost over. Only half a dozen episodes to go!

I don't know what I'll do for anime after unless durlrururl really grabs me.

This is that manga based on the Silk Road right? The art is pretty in depth. The author also did Emma I recall.

    An awesome manga.
Set along the Silk Road that connected Asia with the Mediterranean world, including North Africa and Europe in the 19th century. The story of Amira, a woman skilled in archery and horsemanship, sent to marry Karluk, a boy from another village who is 8 years younger than her. But all is not well, as her village decides to take her back...

And yeah, the art is wonderful.

Yea, author is the same person that wrote Emma. Its set during the 19th century in Central Asia. Tells a story about a marriage between a 12 year old groom and a 20 year old bride. Sorta slice-of lifey, but I really like it for the artwork and unusual setting.

Here's a good example, if the link works.

I don't follow much in terms of manga, but I'll admit to keeping track of this one. It's got a good style to it. I got introduced to the series through the Minami Ikoma arc, and haven't actually gotten back to most of the earlier arcs yet... guess I'll have to go back and see, since it seems most of your guys' faves have been earlier in the series.

The beginning is pretty great. Elsee (or however you want to spell her name) is cute and I feel like the first part of the series gives her a bit more time to shine.

Pffft. All they'd have to do is glare at a typical japanese otaku and he'd melt right there. They're passive creatures, unlike american weaboos who are seriously scary.

Well they're like tiny predators... the only thing they're a threat to are things weaker than themselves. And nothing is weaker than something with gigantic freak-bug eyes that faints from anemia or trips and falls every ten steps, no doubt weakened even more from being a terrible cook.

They're extremely inefficient though. They'd fight each other for trying to eat one. Don't touch her! Rarrr! The precious! The precious!

So they could just run away...okay faint and wake up and feebly roll away
