Alternatively, I am in a professional position and did not stay with my parents after college and just bought a house in my mid 20s.

To be fair, I wasn't having financial troubles until I decided to grow the fuck up, move out of Mom's, and get a car.
Soooo rent, car payments and car insurance are all new to me and oh god how do people live like this
Why move out if you can't, or can just barely, afford it? Especially if your only reason is to "grow up". Milk the parental gravy train as long as you can.
This advice sure is..
*pulls out thesaurus*
puerile.

But I'm also not sucking on my mom's titty anymore, so, hey.
Right, fine. So while your scraping by and I'm "sucking on my mom's titty", you have no capital and I'm investing ten of thousands of dollars. Your right, its pretty bad advice.

This is horrendous advice.
But why? Take the money you save on food and board and invest it. I have multiple friends all in professional positions who have stayed with their parents right after college for a few years and are now looking to buy a house in their mid twenties. This would not have been possible if they had moved out and had to pay full rent and food costs themselves.
Look, I'm about to get hella snippy on you. I'm going to head it off at the pass by telling you that you don't know me, and that it's none of your business (in the nicest way possible, of course).
Because if I have to sit here and explain to some silly goose stranger on the internet why I moved out and grew up like a normal human being, I will not be happy.
But I'm also not sucking on my mom's titty anymore, so, hey.

Buying little anime figurines and keeping them in their boxes is not 'investing', NebQ.

"I'd love that, what can we do after?"
"Quietly make out so we don't wake my parents up."

Look I'm not saying that moving out was the wrong decision for you, because you are right I don't know you and your situation.
I am merely saying that living with your parents for a few years after college can be a very good decision as well. Before one rushes to live out on their own, they should take stock of their situation and see if the money saved by living with one's parents is worth the percieved lack of personal growth and social stigma and any other drawbacks there might be.
edit: Wow this thread started to move fast.
I can't really reply to all of the responses to my posts, but I will say this: Moving out is a financial decision as well as whatever other aspects it carries for you. Regardless of your employment you can save thousands of dollars a year by staying with your parents. If this option is open for you, you should consider it and not just immediately rush out of the house. I may have been to disrespectful to people and I apologize for that, but the "money card" is a card that should be considered in your decision to move out. And sometimes this means that staying with your parent may be the best option, that is all I am really trying to say.
but you can move out and still mooch off somewhat off ya parents ...

if you don't suck, you can live on your own
but if you do suck, you might need some help and live at your parents

Counterpoint: I did live with my parents a few years after college
What now, Mr. Moneybags
And guess what: I did exactly what you suggested. I took stock of the fact that I was completely dependent on my mother for transportation and living, a fact which she liked to lord over my head. We were constantly butting heads and driving each other nuts and I was so unhappy with my living situation that I needed to get out.
I can afford all of my bills with the money I make, and now I don't feel like screaming and punching a wall every day, and I have a MUCH healthier relationship with my mom.
End result: Invest all you want, I'm in a much better place now than I was then.
So again, you don't know my (or other people's) situations, so kindly shut yo' mouf.
I started giving my change to panhandlers. is that good, bad or stupid?

people need to learn that nothing is really a collectible anymore because production is always in the thousands if not millions for anything and everything.

In my opinion, it's just change. If I have a dollar hanging on me and I haven't spent it in more than 2 days, I don't need it, they can have it. I ignore most, though.
There's a guy on the train that sells peanut m&ms, though, that guy is always my friend.

Seriously. I took a chance and got out while I could, and after some help with friends I'm living on my own. Does being broke suck? Fuck yeah it does.

to owning a house and paying everything for water, gas, electric, mortgage, at least 3-4 different kinds of insurance, car loan, etc.
not to mention just the general upkeep a house costs with water heaters breaking, wiring issues, washer and dryer problems, etc.
i like to think renting for awhile is a good stepping stone between the two

But now I'm super rad!
