I don't think that trying to paint the civil-rights movement in a negative light is the best way to preach the 'liberal bias of history books.'

the only name that comes to mind there is Howard Zinn

haven't really run into too much else of what I'd call "liberal bias"

because large cities mean something about the quality of life and the intellectual value of a state

I don't ever hear anyone from Texas complain about quality of life, it's always people from other states

edit: Yeah man, the texas board of education sure does run every other state what

Just as you said, they have a huge population. Which means lots of textbook publishers want Texas schools to buy their materials, so this board's decisions can and has determined what gets put into textbooks published on a national level.

But as an average Texan who loves every single inch of it, I wouldn't except a lot of critical thinking skills to be involved in your choices.

Yes, lets judge an entire state population that honestly don't really give a fuck about conservative politics based on a small collective group of baby-boomer white people with a bit of power under their belt.

If by "a bit of power" you mean "this is what Texan (and probably a lot of other) public school students will learn for the next decade" then yes.

Houston seems like the little bastion of liberalism in Texas. They did elect a gay mayor... even if she is a woman (It's okay, it only says 'man' in the bible, right?)

well you have the 4th and 7th largest cities

I guess that makes it okay to push a ridiculous series of revisions onto a potentially national textbook publishing body

    Except that
    NY Times wrote:
In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states.

    and
The standards, reviewed every decade, serve as a template for textbook publishers, who must come before the board next year with drafts of their books. The board’s makeup will have changed by then because Dr. McLeroy lost in a primary this month to a more moderate Republican, and two others — one Democrat and one conservative Republican — announced they were not seeking re-election.

It's as if someone selected certain elements of all the available information to fit an ideological point that you swallowed without hesitation!

But yes, this is a shame we'll probably waste a lot of time fixing because no one really gave a damn who was on the state board of education until super-conservatives figured that out.
