Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I'm the best man at my friend's wedding, and he has asked me to sing for them a song or two to commemorate the occasion. Problem is, neither he nor his fiancee have any suggestions!
So I turn to you, HA, do you have any suggestions for pretty songs I can sing. I will have a band backing me up.
Basically, anything that is nice without being too sappy, and that's easy enough to play, as the band and I have limited practice time.
Say more on what the couple are into musically to give us a better idea of what you need, instead of having H/A just blindly shooting suggestions.
But for blindly shooting, how about "Touch Me" by the Doors.
Oh and tell us your singing range and tone (i.e. bass, bartone, Alto, etc).
I might add more later...
Edit: here is the more...
"Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" by The Spinners - as a soulful Motown-esque song this is a great one, ypu will probably need some backup singers for the full effect though.
I guess it could be considered too sappy, but The Wedding Song is a good bet. Cool story behind that, too- Noel Paul Stokely (of Peter Paul and Mary) wrote it for Peter's wedding (awww), and then put it in the public domain, as a gift to the world essentially. It's been, by far, the most popular song for weddings since then.
If the couple happens to be Irish, there's also the Irish wedding song, it's popular at the church where I sing.
Oh yeah, the sinatra or dean martin suggestion does indeed sound classy.

"Get Your Hands Off My Woman (Mother Fucker)" and "I Believe In A Thing Called Love," both by The Darkness. You can't go wrong with either of those songs.

The Future Mrs Arbiter and I chose "where my heart will take me" AKA the theme to Enterprise

 Were you married in Starfleet costumes?
I kid. At least you're having a wedding. We just went to the courthouse and signed a paper.
What type of band? Something by Sinatra or Dean Martin could be hella classy if you pulled it off.
We're doing all Dean/Sinatra all the time for ours.
Think our song wil lbe Everybody Loves Somebody.
I really think that doing big band/crooner music is about the classiest thing you can do. People who do current pop stuff inevitably look back on it and hate themselves for how cheesy it seems in hindsight.
If it were me, I'd probably do something Sinatra/Bennett-esque, as, like a tribute to them, followed up by something a little punchier and more light-hearted; I like the Touch Me by the Doors suggestion for that.

There's a song by Michael W. Smith called "The Other Side of Me". He's a christian artist, but the song really doesn't have any Christian tones at all - it's just a love song pretty much. So whether they are religious or aren't, it's still a good choice.
I mostly recommend it because one, it's a beautiful song. Two, it has simple lyrics that are easy to learn and remember, but they are also fairly meaningful to people who are about to get married.
Other than that though, I'd agree with the Sinatra comments. It's hard to go wrong there.
I'm a Tenor, with a pretty decent range, more in the high register. My staple songs are things like More than a Feeling and other 80s power ballads. Funny that someone mentioned I Believe in a Thing Called Love because I actually gave that as a tongue-in-cheek suggestion.
My friend is a keyboardist and a big fan of The Tea Party and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but, as you can imagine, neither of those bands are known for their sentimentality.
I'll check out these suggestions, please keep 'em coming, thanks!

Someone has obviously never listened to "Give it away" or "Aeroplane."
You know you can always do a cover of the RHCP cover of Sly 'n' the Family Stone's "If you Want Me to stay"...
which is an awesome song that rocks my socks off.
Damn, I was kinda hoping this was suggestions for just a band. It doesn't have any lyrics, but personally I've decided if I have a wedding Sofa No 1 by Frank Zappa is being played or else

That's what we had planned, until we eloped.
How bland, like keeping your furniture under cellophane to avoid a little wear and tear. And thinking about it, anyone that would obsess that much about music they listen to during that certain period in their life has bigger issues than what the DJ plays. You think that the difference in taste and the wisdom coming with age would add nostalgic reflections.

Hush By Angie Aparo, or hell anything by Angie Aparo, how good friends are you with the bride? if you know her well enough for it not to be creepy Wonderful Tonight is a good one. Beyond the Sea is a nice classy crooner song

Elton John. Your Song, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, any of that stuff. Everybody loves some Elton. Highly romantic songs and you can put as much or as little into them as you want. You could just have piano/vocals or have guitar, drums and everything else as well.

Your Song is a good suggestion, I'll bring it up with them tonight.
The only problem I can see is that my bud's ex was a huge Moulin Rouge fan, hopefully that won't be an issue.
I'd also say going with a jazz standard or something classy. Off the top of my head:
-I Get A Kick Out Of You
-Misty
-Laura
-My Romance
-All the things you are
Honestly, if you go into almost any music store, they'll almost definitely have a huge book of jazz standards, and you can just thumb though it. Also, do you play anything? or are you only singing? Some of these songs are relatively easy to play on an instrument. Also, these should be good whether you have just a keyboard behind you or an actual band, and the band/pianist will almost certainty know these song or at least be able to read though the changes.
I used to DJ weddings and socials. For one of the standard dances you want to play Wonderful Tonight. Trust me. Old people love that shit like you can't even fucking imagine. If you don't work it into the planned parts of the evening, keep it handy in case things start to lull on the dance floor. You'll pack it every single time.
Oh, you have to sing it. I missed that. Okay, Wonderful Tonight is also a great song because it's not too sappy, and Clapton's voice is pretty easy to mimic so far as they go. There aren't any really high or low notes in the vocals.

It was the song my wife and I had our first dance to, so it may not fit your situation (since you're singing it), but it's a good song nonetheless.
$('#you').appendTo('#compton').css('color', 'white');This actually maybe a good idea seeing as it doesn't take much talent to pull of Sinatra, just bravado and staying tuned into with the style.

If they're fans of the movie, "As the World Falls Down" by David Bowie (from Labyrinth) is a favorite of mine.
I second "Your Song".
Also, Eric Clapton, "Wonderful Tonight".
