Actually, secondary question: everyone seems to hate Samba, so why is it so ubiquitous?

    Because Microsoft uses it.

Why can't they make it not suck? They're clearly capable of doing good stuff.

Of course this extends to "why doesn't Windows include a decent file transfer handler?"

But that is of course true of every operating system. Linux doesn't even have a decent Teracopy-mimic, AFAIK.

    SMB2.0 (Win7/Server 2008) is a lot better, but I don't think the open-source implementations support that yet.

Samba is for letting Windows talk to real computers.

It's like yelling slowly and loudly at foreigners.

    It doesn't really work.

See everyone says this, but I maintain: what in god's name is supposed to be the alternative. Even if I had a bunch of Linux boxes, the answer to networking them in a versatile way would apparently be Samba.

EDIT: I mean, it's not for a lack of searching. I've invested weekends trying to setup that GridFTP or the other protocol they developed for CERN.

Depends? What do you mean networking them together, as in shared storage? High volume data transfer?

SMB in Windows was originally intended for real-time access to small files within a single network segment.

Outside of that niche, it spazzes out and pisses all over itself.

Seriously, look at a SMB connection in a network sniffer sometime. It generates a wholly unnecessary amount of traffic.

Microsoft basically intended DFS for use over WANs (but nobody ever actually uses that).

New York Governor is the job where you go "Huh that sounds really important!" and then you realize that the Mayor of NYC is probably probably just below the senior senator in terms of power. Governor of New York isn't really an important post, and what with two huge disgraces in a row, it's a pretty laughable one.
