Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Recommend games where you create your own units

Like Impossible Creatures, but I already own that. I want some game suggestions where there's tons of customization and such. Creating your own things is just incredibly appealing to me. No Armored core or MMOs though. Or Jade Coccoon. Or Robopon. D:

(And no mentioning Spore, as it's not out yet.)

Nor Magic pengel/ graffiti kingdom. Looking for games I don't know about.

    MArk of Chaos.

Practically lets you play Warhammer only in a game. Swapping out body parts, customising armies, painting em, its really good.

Metal Fatigue was a PC RTS that had a limited form of this, you has giant robot units that you could pick the parts for and if you destroyed another enemies robot you could take its arms for yourself.

What's more, you get to customize an entire army.
Allthough, i'm not sure it's a safe recommendation, lot's of potential, but the devs dropped the ball on allot of features.
And then there's the patching - there's a huge patch supposed to be out for it last Januari. People are still waiting while the game (and it's community) dies a quiet death.

that game died before it got off the launch pad, which is really a damn shame

I always stop caring about ship design at the end of the game. It's just pump out as many whatever ship the fastest.

Maybe slightly off topic, but there was a really bad RTS game maybe 6 or 8 years ago where you could make your own units but I can't remember the name. I remember one faction was like the trailer park faction or something. I think it took place in the bog-standard post-apolcalyptic earth. All units built instantly (you only had to pay the cost) and the game really, really sucked. Anyone know the game?

Mark of Chaos has a great single player.

    But only once.

There is no replay at all, period.

If you can borrow it, dont buy it. I only spent £17 on it so Im not too pissed, but goddam it had so much potential. afaik there isnt even a skirmish mode.

Master of Orion II. Old as hell, but a metric fuckton of customization. Design your own ships from scratch, pick the hull, the armor, shields, computer, weapons and systems, all from fields you chose to research. Doom Star + Time Warp Facilitator + Stellar Converter = win.

There is, you need to host a local multiplayer game and add AI opponents.

God, yes. Is it still possible to play this online? Much as I still enjoy it, the AI hasn't been a challenge in ages, mostly because it can't design ships to save its ass. Unless I take a handicapped, no-fun custom race.

Or at least, anyone know of a mod that fixes the AI's scatterbrained, directionless ship designs? Maybe that has a bunch of templates for various tech combinations?

Outpost 2 is a relatively old rts that had tons of unit customizing. I've only barely played it, though, so I can't say much on its quality.

Yeah, but you did have the Scavengers with their school bus cannons, I figured it was close enough.

Mechwarrior 2:Mercs and MW4:Mercs. Apart from not being able to change the outward appearance, the mech editor was effectively a unit builder. Right down to speed and jump capability, etc. With some limits, but those could be sidestepped with a large enough selection of base chassis.

    Spore. :P

Mr. Banballow was so badly maimed, he turned into a hideous monster, oozing and bleeding, snarling and growling like a beast---enraged and bent on revenge. He tracked down the kids responsible for the fire and killed them one by one----with a blowtorch. That wasn't enough for Banballow. He won't leave his inn or his memories, so there he waits....in ambush....

Nobody's mentioned the Front Mission games. Strategy RPGs, but with mechs. Each mech has four components, 2-4 weapon mounts of various types (depending on which game and what arms you attach), and a few other components like onboard computers. FM3 and 4 were released in the US for the PSX and PS2, respectively.

I never did get around to FM4, but I have played 1 and 3 - there's a lot of available customization. In FM3, there's a bit more reason to customize, since there's reason to use weapons other than dual machineguns. FM1, there was one indisputably best setup, so deviating from it (like using treads or hoverjets instead of legs, or using different weapon types) typically gave bad results. The series also lets you selectively destroy enemies, since they have four HP bars. You can destroy arms to disable weapons, legs to stop them in place, and the body to either destroy the mech or eject the pilot (FM3 added the ability to eject and kill pilots and steal their mechs instead of just destroying everything).

Going to echo Earth 2150 here.

Lots of different choices for units between chasis and weapon systems. It was, sometimes, overly complex but if you want variety and realistic RTS gameplay it's the way to go. It's hard to beat seeing a platoon of heavy rocket mechs laying seige to a base as a half dozen resupply shuttles keep them in loaded with missiles.

Buy Gold Edition, the expansion pack is online only so better to go for gold. That being said, at some point you realize that youwill have so many ship designs going that it is better to either at the end or beginng, abbreviate the weapon and defense values as M2B78G12P20S20A20. Will make it a lot easier to pick out the best ship.

Really got to get back to playing that one. Really got to clean out my design folder, its a total mess, I rarely use the same combat design and eventually start going a different direction each game.

Ya you really need a good system. While having something called a Phalanx or Galaxy Fucker might sound cool, it's really a lot more practical to name them things like YBS3 (which means: race=Yor, weapons=Beam, size=Small, and the third iteration of that design).

Probably not exactly what you want, but maybe check out Startrek Starfleet Commander III

Actually a pretty good game, and I'm not even a huge star trek fan. If I remember right(while back), there's a good amount of customization of your ship. I could be wrong.
