Why are we prefering a draw to England flat out losing? Are we just realists and we don't think England will be trounced by these guys, or is there more strategery to it?

Algeria have apparently scored 1 goal in their last 6 international matches...not much confidence they can win this one.

If by "we" you mean the States, in the end it doesn't particuarly matter. If we beat Algeria by at least 2 next game, we're in regardless of any other outcome. I guess an England 0-0 draw here makes it a little easier.

Rooting for the US while not being completely insane in thinking England would lose. That would be amazing, so we split the difference and figure they'll draw.

If Algeria win they'll have a reason to turn up against the US. They won't with a draw, but with no material effect on the US's chances.

I believe that if Algeria and England ties here, there's a way we (USA) can conveivably advance with a draw next Wednesday. Algeria wins, and we need a win. England wins, and we need to win 2-0 at least to guarantee passage.

Might as well use this one.

Rooney is so going to get a red this game.

Rationale for wanting a draw is England will be on 2 points, Slovenia on 4. An England Slovenia draw and US Algeria draw still gives the US chance, on goals scored. A win would put the US through no matter what.

If England wins, we're still in a "just beat Algeria" situation, provided England or Slavenia WINS, not draws. If England/Slavenia draw, we will need to have beat Algeria by 2.

Or beat Algeria by one but score one more goal against Algeria than Slovenia does against England, I think. So if we beat Algeria 1-0 and England/Slovenia finished 0-0, we'd move through. Same with 2-1 and a 1-1 draw.
