[Let's Play] STALKER: Call of Pripyat - STALKER series overview
Posts
I finally find my first set of tools courtesy of a gang of (well-fed) mercenaries. I have to say that I'm rather pleased with how tools and upgrades work. Initially, I thought it would take one tool set per upgrade, but instead finding a specific kind of tool set unlocks the relevant upgrades at a given mechanic. Schnazzy. This is also my first foray into a new region of the Zone. The Zone is a horrible place. Horrible in such a way that you can't get ten feet from a safe area without having your life threatened. And yes, I know the nighttime stuff is very dark, but no worries. I now have a mod on which significantly increases the flashlight range so everyone will be able to see what I see at night starting after set 5.
Oh yeah, I come across a wicked anomaly. The devs really went all out in making some lethal, beautiful anomalies this time around. Everything you see about them says "STAY AWAY" but you just know they've got to have some shinies hidden back there somewhere.
Set 4 - Did you just get back up?
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
What do you think this is, SILENT HILL?
[EDIT]Also, weird bug that Zombies being utterly ignored by the other STALKERS. Might wanna get a fan-patch for that.
Also, screw zombies getting back up. I'm conditioned to just let them fall and either ignore them to save ammo or be able to finish them off with one more shot. This business where they can get back up and shoot me just isn't right.
You should knife them when they fall down. And why don't you give some Vodka to the Jupiter mechanic? It's a pittance to you and it unlocks more upgrades for your suit and weapons.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
You gotta shoot 'em in the head!
I gotta say, having not played these games but watched your LPs, this game seems more like the first one in that there is just always more crazy anomalies and monster fights going on around the place, I felt like that stuff didn't seem to come up as much in Clear Sky.
You don't see anything when you don't have a flashlight on and are falling into holes.
Turn your flashlight on. Fall into less holes.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Or buy some Nightvision! Can you equip your current headgear with NVGs? Or do ya gotta buy one o 'dem helmets?
Gotta have a head-bucket, yeah.
Hmmmm.... I vote ya grab the bucket Snarl! Be stealthy, embrace the high-pitched whine!
So I discovered a pretty easy way to make some money. I never stalk at night because I am scared and the flashlight is useless. The only thing it is going to illuminate is your position to every thing for miles. So I sleep and always get up fairly early to make the most of the daylight. When I leave the boat there's always a big group of stalkers also leaving. They eventually split up into 2s and 3s so just pick one and follow them. Talk to the lead guy and ask what he's up to. He'll say he's going to x location to look for artifacts so tag along. You will fast travel to the location and then just start hunting artifacts. In one day I've made almost 15k rubles this way following jerks around.
I second this motion.
Except for the bucket I find in the next set and holy hell is the night vision even more mind-wrecking than ever. The best part is the place I find it. It really is not in a place I would ever expect to find anything, much less a useful helmet.
Lies and falsehoods. I can always see fine on my screen. Also, I never fall into holes, I jump into holes. Intentionally. I only ever end up where I mean to go.
And good to hear that people are enjoying the game. I also had no idea you could actually follow other Stalkers on their artifact hunts. I will definitely have to give it a shot. And the obvious best way to not have people see you at night is to just run around with your light off. Who cares if the only things which will see are the things which don't need light to see anyway?
Well you have to think of your fans! If we can't see anything, then we'd be better off watching a Doom 3 Let's Play.
In the second part of the last set, there's one spot in particular where I cringe at not realizing how dark the video was going to be. In the video, I'm on top of a train and fire a few shots into what is apparently pitch-black nothing but what is actually a couple of zombies. They weren't even very far away, but the flashlight was completely useless in illuminating them.
And I don't know if the helmet NVGs will really solve anything. I haven't used them in action yet so I don't know how bad they are, but between the brightness increase and the green-o-vision I might not even be able to see. Just have to find out the hard way.
This right here.
Though in Vanilla SoC I didn't have a problem with nighttime stalking. LURK cured me of that, however.
Well in SoC they were two version of NVGs, good and bad. The bad had green-o-vision and was really crappy, but the good was blue and illuminated everything really well. I'm sure there's a minor mod that makes all the NVGs good quality.
And the helmet I found will upgrade past the green-o-vision. I have to head back to the first region anyway so I'll see if I can't get it upgraded there. Hopefully the tools I found for the mechanic back there will let me get the second vision level.
There's a lot of nice touches like that. Like how you can tag along with moving groups of stalkers for free fast travel.
So I'm actually caught up on the LP now.
Quest design is pretty wonderful as well. You haven't even done the missing stalker quest in Zaton, which is one of my favorites.
The quest for getting food for the mercs is mistranslated. It says 6 of each food item (18 total). It's not. It's 6 total food items, of any combination. I was annoyed after I bought food to cover it and ended up with a whole lot extra that I didn't need.
Giving Cardan vodka doesn't just open up upgrades. The first bottle you give him gives you a minor discount to repairs and upgrades. The second bottle you give him increases the discount a bit and opens up that quest for finding out about his buddies. The third bottle causes him to pass out until the next day.
I hadn't actually tried energy drinks in CoP. No idea they had actually made them useful for something.
Item pickup is buggy in CoP. Sometimes it just won't give you the icon and allow you to pick something up, even if it gives you a "pick up item" tooltip. Sometimes you just have to get another angle on it. Sometimes you need to nudge it a bit. It's real finnicky, and it makes collecting some of the stashes kind of frustrating. I think Morninglord mentioned some kind of scooping method in the STALKER thread that was more consistent, but I don't remember what it was.
You didn't get the quest dialogue that relates to the tunnel you went through at the end of the last set, but it's wonderful.
"For science!"
Night vision in CoP works better than in the other two games. Like, it actually messes with light intake rather than just fruitlessly throwing a gamma filter over the screen. Oh, and you know what doesn't have night vision whine? LURK 1.1. :smug:
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Zone Reclamation Project has an option to make all NVG good quality AND disable the whine. But I like the whine. I think it's mighty nifty.
Next orders of business are tools and finding more artifacts. I also want to find a better artifact device.
edit: Ninja I did get some mods including a flashlight mod. How can I make the range of the light further? Its got a good brightness and a large cone but it only works like 8 feet in front of me. The other mods I got were high quality PDA maps that look amazing and the ironsights fix for 4:3 aspect ratios. It seemed like accuracy was a bit off and I was right. Had to aim under everything and it made headshots impossible.
edit 2: I found the stats I was looking for to modify my light range. I went a bit overboard and I need to fine tune it.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
I'm giving them options! You shut up.
Anyway, set 5 will go up tomorrow and I just recorded set 6 today. You ever heard of these things called chimeras? D:
That's my chimera face. As opposed to an actual chimera face which would be this: :evil:
Because somewhere along the line, they went from being big lumbering things with a fairly avoidable lunge to the bastard child of Jackie Chan and a cutlery shop. Good thing it was just one of them and I took it completely by surprise; even then, it ended up being a pretty close call. As in roughly a foot away for the survived encounter.
I'm fairly certain this is the least shooting I've ever done in a set, but it was pretty intense when I was recording it, particularly when I was heading back to base. I'm fairly certain a bloodsucker saw me, but I have no idea if anything was actually around on the entire way back.

Part 3
Part 4
I've found tools and upgraded my shit. Also found a sniper rifle and a shotty worth carrying. Replaced the .45 pistol because even its high caliber was no match for basic dogs. Hoping the shotgun works out better.
Anyone know where a Veles detector could be found? I know I get one from completing the bloodsucker missions but I'm scared without grenades for my launcher. The only two grenades I had were used dealing with a big zombie group. Ninja I had the same problem you had with zombies but if you pop them once while they are thrashing they go still.
I love emissions. I was in the saw mill and I had just found the tools I needed. I wanted to poke around the other buildings and see what I could find. As soon as I hit the ground I get the warning. I run to the nearest shelter and its a crevice in the ground that is probably filled with snorgs. I'm overweight, fairly far from shelter, and have no energy drinks. I barely made it back to the main boat alive. Huffing and puffing, heart actually racing in real life. What a rush.
Also, was anyone else half-expecting to see a US Flag on the tail of that UAV? I woulda thought it immensely WEIRD if there was. I guess if it were a blacker, kinda stealthy looking UAV it woulda made more sense for it to have a US Flag or something.
Also, I'm pretty sure Veles detectors are just father into the game. Clear Sky only had 3-4 detectors and I'm already on the second one so I imagine I'll see them as I get farther.
I heard you can find one on Noah but I killed him (which was fucking hard btw) and he didn't have one. I know you get one for completing the bloodsucker mission line but I'm too much of a girl to do it. I know where one is in Jupiter but I'm not ready to travel there yet.
Apparently if you save up 100k rubles you get an achievement and Owl starts selling higher end shit including Veles detectors.
So it looks like there's a bubble anomaly at the cooling tower.
I know. Which is why it'd be REALLY weird.
Also, when you rat out Flint/Magpie to the guys at Zalton, you should see if Carlton will upgrade your new helmet.
Say Snarl, any recommendations for mods? Also, where are you getting yours?
Twitter Youtube Xbox
I presumed these artifacts would be worth a lot as I sell all mine unless they have purely positive benefits. Did this in SoC and it served me very well. However neither Beard nor Owl has any interest in buying the artifacts and I am stymied. It even says in the description the artifact is very rare. Is it because I killed the guy to get them?
Also more and more stalkers from the boat are becoming zombies. I'll see a crew and think hey safety in numbers and I'll run over to them only to see two or three red dots on the minimap and then the fun starts. Kind of curious why they all started popping up.
Hang on to them. You'll need one later. There is another way to get them but killing him works too.
The regular flashlight beam is something like 5 meters (I don't know the exact number but it isn't very far); the mod puts it up to 15 and I put it up to 40. What kind of idiot Stalker puts a nightlight on his helmet instead of an actual flashlight?
As for that cooling tower business, yeah, I figure I just have to find the right entrance somewhere, be it a portal or just a door to some underground accesses. I spent like twenty minutes scouring that place and found nothing; it'd better not just be a huge tease you can't do anything about.
Someone will send you back there later.
