Now that was a really nice game. I wish they had let you play as "Same Character Vs Same Character" as Street Fighter called it. The inability to have mirror matches was kind of annoying, especially since each character had two costumes.

Did you ever play Bushido Blade 2 where some characters could utilize an offhand weapon if you selected a certain mainhand weapon?

You could totally fling the offhand at your foe and kill him in one shot. I perfected that move within the first second of the fight just after the "go" call, and actually caused the destruction of 2 controllers when angry friends would toss them after being impaled in the face by a small rapier or katana. It was banned as a cheap move in group tournaments. They called it my rule.

BB2 was too much of a departure from the original for me. I never really got into it.

Yeah, I felt that BB2 was a really bad game. The subweapon bug that you mention...I don't know if that was genuinely overpowered or not because I never saw it abused. The issues that I had were different. Let's see...

OK, long weapons were way too powerful. There was this knockback feature where blocking attacks would cause you to get pushed back. That's normally fine, but in this game you got pushed back really, really far, especially by the longer weapons. This meant that in a short-versus-long fight, the guy with the short weapon would have an incredibly hard time getting close enough to hit. So short weapons were grossly underpowered.

The stance-switching was dumb. You had three stances in BB2, just as you did in BB1. But in BB1, you had two switch-stance buttons. This meant that from any stance, you could go directly to any other stance. BB2 used the same three-stance system, but took out one of the switch-stance buttons. But the worst part? The other switch-stance button was UNUSED. They simply deactivated the button! Why would you do that? Now if I want to go from middle stance to low stance, I have to go through high stance, and the button I want to use to go straight to low stance is right there, but it doesn't do anything! What the fuck?

The iai stances looked cool, but it was annoying that you couldn't swing multiple times, and you had to do this big, elaborate twirl move to re-sheath your weapon after every strike. Let me swing as many times as I want, THEN put the weapon away. Or at least let me interrupt the put-away animation to swing again. It made the iai stance basically worthless.

Guarding was the dumbest fucking thing I've ever seen. The old game had three attacks (vertical/high, horizontal/mid, and low) and one guard button which had to be timed to intercept attacks as they came in. In BB2, they changed the attack scheme to two attacks (left and right) and the guard feature was that you press the attack button that matched your opponent's attack. What? The guard feature is on the attack button? And there are only two attack buttons, so I have a 50/50 shot at blocking as long as I'm pressing attack? That's fucking retarded, and that SCREAMS for button-mashing.

So now the only way I can block your attacks is to attack into them, and since there are only two attack buttons, I have a 50/50 shot at just getting lucky and blocking. On top of that, if I pick a longer weapon than you, I will obviously get the first chance at hitting, and if you block, you'll be shoved back really far, which means that the next time we start to close the distance, I'll get another free shot. Imagine if marines in Starcraft pushed things back when they shot them. Would a zergling or zealot ever have a reasonable chance? Fuck no, they'd just have to deal with waves of fire until they finally buy the farm.
