Well there was another guy on the field during Spain vs Germany, which I first thought was jimmy jump but it wasn't.

Jimmy is more creative about his on-stage acts.

Robben should of been sent off too for kicking the ball away. Xavi got a yellow for it, I see no reason why Robben shouldn't of gotten one too.

I'll have to watch other Robben matches because in today's match he was probably one of my favorite players to watch. Some exciting break aways and the one time he could have easily gone down, he muscled through it like a freakin' rugby player (only to be denied glory).

too many fouls in the first 30 minutes, they should have backed down when it was 2-2 on yellows.

after that we lost so many calls it wasnt even funny. still they conceided when keeping hacking after 2-2 on yellows.

and robben should have made one.

Can't say I'm proud of the mean tricks Holland pulls, De Jong in the first quarter was just awful. Then again, football is a mean sport and it's only getting meaner. D:

This is patently untrue. Football is probably getting less mean.

How is that 'patently'? You can disagree, but I don't think there is any conclusive evidence that yesteryears rough play is meaner than today's constant stream of kicks, pinches, pulling, slapping and punching.

I didn't mean to be controversial. I'm not a huge historian of the game but my experience watching old games and even seeing games in the 90s suggests to me that things haven't gotten meaner. I have a theory about it too. More money and massive coverage means that the impetus to clamp down on dangerous play is there and all the players have a bigger stake and so you get a kind of detente. Plus replays mean that you will be caught and punished for egregious shit like intentionally trying to injure players.

Yeah seriously you guys. This was a game full of fouls but when you look at old games you realise how incredibly hard this game was. A little more than 10 years ago the kind of fouls in this game wouldve been just friendly play.

    Check this thing.

    'Paul the octopus' indeed.

Surely I can't be the only one who sees behind the dread dreamer's veil of madness? So many are already fawning at his clever ploy, mere mortal minds not meant to handle such impossibly accurate portents.

    We must stay vigilant.

I don't see any hard fouls not called in that vid. Maybe right at the beginning there was a rough stretch but that's not any different than any game nowadays. I actually think the ref was wrong on that foul on Bergkamp before Rikjarrd cut that Brazilian down, that should have been a foul. I don't agree that this video supports your case.

Not called doesn't mean they weren't hardcore. Most of the yellows would be reds now. If you want real insanity, check the 1974 game Netherlands vs Brazil.

Had $50 on Huntelaar to score first. Figured the game would 0-0 a long time then he'd be subbed on and score. Was half right. At least I get my $50 back, but $500 would have been so much nicer. :(

It's just taking advantage of how they work their first scorer betting. If they didn't refund bets on players who don't play before the first goal is scored I wouldn't have bet on a player who wasn't starting.

goddamn fuck I was just so hoping that Huntelaar got in the game. replacing robben or van persie and just doing his 'lol I score goals" thing. Those guys are for winning on tactics, Huntelaar and Elia win by putting balls into the net because they're cool like that. Balls should be in goals and that's about as far as Huntelaar thinks I guess.

Obviously Robben is a far better player, but his play just wasn't needed.

Truly, Paul is a remarkable Cephalopod.

And that game was full of so many fouls it was just absurd. Then again we complain when the ref doesn't hand out penalties and we complain when he does. How are the refs ever supposed to win really? In any event, by beating the Netherlands New Zealand ends the tournament the only undefeated team. Plus it's not like we were in an easy group or anything either!

So, apparently that dude who jumped on the field and went for the trophy is a Catalan and it was some sort of traditional catalan hat he was trying to put on the trophy.

It was interesting, I'd heard in the news that in Catalonia, folks were basically rooting for Spain to lose

  • oldmankenoldmanken Registered User regular
The Dutch played the way they had to, because it was the only chance they had at winning. However, they shouldn't be complaining about the ref, because they deserved practically every card they got, and they were lucky they weren't down to 9 or 10 men after the first half.

Thank god for Spain though... beautiful football wins!

I think the Netherlands had plenty enough talent to win on merit had they elected to do so. I mean, they had a 25-match unbeaten streak they were working off of, for God's sake. If that doesn't scream 'we can beat anyone put in front of us without having to resort to bush-league bullshit', I don't know what does. This isn't a Slovenia or a Bahrain we're talking about here, and Spain wasn't some unstoppable juggernaut, with all the 1-0 wins and the loss to Switzerland.

They resorted to bush-league bullshit not because they weren't good enough. They were. They resorted to bush-league bullshit because they didn't believe themselves to be good enough despite all suggestions to the contrary. That final hurdle came and their confidence went right down the toilet. They were good enough. They just choked and resorted to hacking to cover it up.

to be fair to Spain in regards to winning every game 1-0, they faced a murderer's row of defensive teams in Portugal, Paraguay, Germany, and the Dutch. And all those teams played even more defensive than normally do because they feared Spain.

I wish Spain had gotten a chance to play someone like Argentina in the knockouts, that would have been the type of game that would have really let them showcase their ability. But credit to Spain for being able to win ugly, since no other recourse was left to them.

And another thing about the Dutch and 'oh this is the only way we can win'.

You're in the World Cup Final. 204 teams start out, and you're one of the last two standing. You don't get that far by accident. If you manage to get to the World Cup Final, you are a damn good team, capable of taking out any team that stands in your way. I don't care how invincible the other team that got there looks. You got there too. You knocked over some damn good teams to get to that point. You're telling me that a team can go through this list of opponents on the way to the final- this is everyone the Dutch faced from their first qualifier on, friendlies included:

    Norway
    Scotland
    Macedonia
    Iceland
    Sweden
    Tunisia
    England
    Japan
    Australia
    Italy
    Paraguay
    United States
    Mexico
    Ghana
    Hungary
    Denmark
    Japan
    Cameroon
    Slovakia
    Brazil
    Uruguay

...not lose a single match out of all that... and then you're scared of Spain? I don't buy a word of it.

Really surprised to see so much criticism of Howard Webb today, Holland didn't make it the easiest game to keep control of and most of the important decisions he got spot on.

Didn't understand the criticism of the quality of the match either, though, the technicality of it was superb and it was really interesting tactically, too.

edit: also did we get a follow up on that douchebag claiming every major tournament was fixed based on the financial situation in western Europe which meant Germany were shoe ins to win it, to keep them in the Euro?

    (1) Refs get shit on. Webb was fine and will suffer no loss of reputation from this game.

    (2) People like wide open play even though the odds of it happening in a World Cup final are pretty fucking low.

    (3) I'm pretty sure that dude was joking/trolling.
