The Art of War: Dick Painting: A new kind of brush head
Posts
"EVEN IN DEATH I STILL COOK MOTHERFUCKERS".
Be warned, I think it's something like 8 layers, so it's not really something I recommend if you want to finish your models... like ever.
Hah. Will do. Although I think you posted your first BA's after I had posted some of my Grey Hunters, then I posted my Rhino and you followed with yours. It's like we are cosmically linked in our painting/posting.
These are my notes on the yellow for the helmets:
Iyanden darksun + Golden Yellow (1:1) until you get a good coverage
A gryphonne sepim wash.
Iyanden darksun + Golden Yellow (1:1) again, leaving the wash in the recesses
Iyanden darksun + Golden Yellow (1:2) and
Iyanden darksun + Golden Yellow (1:3) building up the highlights
The final highlight is Golden Yellow.
Some of the stages may require several coats to get a good coverage.
Notes on the red:
I prime with the "Pure Red" primer from The Army Painter, though I know they now have 2 red primers, the other one might be better for BA:s, I don't know.
1 layer of Mechrite red + Blood Red (1:2) to make sure I have a basecoat where I might have missed with the primer.
Wash (Badab Black + Devlan Mud + Baal Red (1:1:1))
More Mechrite red + Blood Red (1:2) to make sure the wash only is visible in the recesses.
Pure Blood Red to start picking up the highlights.
The final highlights are Blood Red + Blazing Orange (1:1).
I usually just layer the different mixes of red on until I'm happy with how it looks, I would say that each mix after the wash requires at least two layers to get a good coverage.
"Look at that subtle off-white coloring, the tasteful thickness of it... Oh my God, it even has a watermark."
Mago posted his first BA oh so long ago... He is very similar to one of the owners of my shop who paints Blood Angels... a model a month... but holy shit that model is gorgeous
Please note that I DON'T recommend my method for anyone else.
Haha! Now that I think about it I think I actually bought my first Blood Angel models like a year ago.
You may also notice that the only model with any of the new BA bits is the latest Rhino, which got it as an afterthought in the final stages of painting...
I looks so much better, but Jesus will it take longer.
That being said, here is my first purchase WIP Again lamp is still borked so I had to use the sun and I was trying to do this before I was late to work.
I have ta say I feel like I really learned a lot on doing this mini so far and its nice to see how far my painting skills have come along since I started painting last year =)
C&C is always welcome and yes i know about the lump on the back of the cape, I will be fixing that at some point. The damn mini fell over when I was basing it and dented the paint I had applied and I did not catch it until it was too late to easily fix =(

I'm sorry, I'm not up on my abbreviations, what's SA in the TGD forum?

That looks like the kind of thing you'd expect to see Britney Shining Spears riding around in =p
*edit* Ok, well I guess I don't have a single boy that is completely done. Every single one needs a loincloth, or teeth, or something washed. So all I really have are stormboyz, burnas, and nobz.
Marneus Calgar is currently reprimanding the Ultramarines techpriests, as his is no longer the pimpest land raider.
Incoming Xzibit style "We put guns on the guns so you can shoot guns while you gun!" blue land raider
Also, what model is the Dead Terminator in the Throne in the OP?
"EVEN IN DEATH I STILL COOK MOTHERFUCKERS".
I need it.
Thanks for the quick response.
"EVEN IN DEATH I STILL COOK MOTHERFUCKERS".
They've got a couple of Rogue Psykers that I'd really like to get, and they would only cost about $25.

BC, right? Usually takes me 3 or 4 weeks to get anything.
Sweet. Ordered.

The Kodiak is actually painted in a khaki color, the flash makes it brighter than it really is. I still have a bit of touching up to do, but I'm pretty happy, considering that my hands shake more than a drug addict with low blood sugar.
Just to show you what washing can do, here's how my Wolves are painted. You can see (kind of) how the wash really brings out the details.
First wash applied. Black on the grey areas and weapons, brown on the face:
Second and third washes applied.
Now, I go for a really grimy, dirty look for my dudes so I hit the washes pretty hard and sloppy. You can still pull a heck of a lot of detail even if your washes are light and subtle.
Anyway, nice work so far! I get the whole shaky hands thing -- I have to do a lot of dive bombing (read: moving the model to the brush and pulling away quickly) with anything I paint or there will be streaks everywhere. So there's another tip for a shaky brotha.
PS - Can't wait to see what you do with those new Menoth boxes you got. =)
Those rat ogres look fantastic.
They've really come a long way from what they used to produce. Pretty models!
Now, you could get creative... Green-stuff berets(There's a nice one in the catachan command box you could base it off), rebreathers, and some light green-stuffed carapace(knee-pads, maybe a bit else).
But yeah, the only real stormtrooper choices are the metal kasrkins or metal old stormtroopers.
Thanks for the advice. I'm probably going to touch up some of the spots that need it tonight, then hit it with a wash tomorrow. Would you recommend hitting the khaki with a wash as well?
I'm using my Khador stuff to get all the kinks worked out with this painting thing before I start on the Menoth. I'm going to probably miss all the little short cuts I can take with black primer, though, since it's probably a better idea to prime those bad boys in white for the color scheme I've got planned.
What's your Menoth scheme going to be?
Years ago, I created a superhero named Space Pope. His costume looked like this:
My plan is to keep the basic Menoth color scheme:
but change the dark red to a dark blue.
I dub them the forces of the Steam Pope.
I can't paint horns. I just can't. How do you guys done horns? Not so much bone, or skulls - those have recesses I can wash/blend into. A horn is just round and pointy, and it's frustrating the fuck out of me.
I'm painting warriors of chaos, and so far, the models are turning out really well. I'm looking forward to posting them on here! But these horns...damn them! *shakes fist*
Any advice would be appreciated gents (and ladies).
What sort of horn are you going for? There's no particular reason that they should be "bone" coloured.
You could just blend from a lighter brown at the base to a dark brown at the tip. There's no real need for it to be a dramatic blend either.
You can paint striations etc. into them but it doesn't sound like you want to get that complicated.
Worst case scenario, just paint them dark dark brown then use paint on gloss varnish on them after you've matte sprayed everything else.
- base it with snakebite leather.
- wash devlan
- paint most of the horn bleached (starting from tip but not all the way to the base)
- streak up devlan in thin lines over the bleached, or just wash it again.
Horns are easy peasy.
