Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I Have Two Days, Ten Bucks, It's Dark, and I'm Wearing Sunglasses
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

As as aspiring writer, Alan Wake does look interesting, but I've heard mixed signals about it. If I like Neil Gaiman or H.P. Lovecraft, will I like this?

I loved it and usually people tell me I'm too hard on criticizing games.

I was not fond of Alan Wake, but not because of the game quality (did not like the story at all but I'm just not a fan of that variety of writing). Plus, it can easily be completed in two days and should really be played in the dark anyway.

Sadly, I am limited by my location in Bumfucknowhere, Washington to just the local Blockbuster, which only has recent releases, movie tie ins, and sports games.

Stephen King variety of writing. I know loads of people dig it, but it's just not for me. And not being willing to just accept the story for what it is, I felt there were some pretty glaring holes in the writing. However, there are also plenty of people who absolutely swear by the game and I can understand why. I was also unhappy that I spent 60 bucks on the game (it's not very long), but I don't blame the devs for that because I was absolutely aware of how short the game was before purchasing it. If you're renting, that definitely won't be a problem for you.
At the very least, an above-average game; it just wasn't good for me personally.

Dead Space seconded if it's still there and you haven't played it. Amazing piece of game. Dragon Age if you haven't played it. I understand this is a rental, but you're free to pick it up/rent it again later to finish or drop it if you don't like it. Darksiders is great.. Arkham Asylum..
Edit: Prototype or Assassin's Creed II if you're in the mood.. otherwise eh..
Edit Edit: Yes Metro 2033 is also a decent shooter with a decent story. Wasn't blown away but it'll do for a rental.

Dead Space was good, but a little too gimmicky for me.
Prototype and Dragon Age I own, and I played AA and ACII to the point where I just didn't enjoy them anymore. Darksiders look too, well, HERP DERP BADASS DEMON WITH ROBOT ARM to me. THanks for the suggestions though.
EDIT: Not a big JRPG fan, but is Lost Odyssey any good?

If you can enjoy God of War you can enjoy Darksiders (it's got the same serious "I am a badass" attitude, it doesn't make fun of itself.) If you haven't played God of War I don't even know who you are anymore. If you're looking for RPG see if they have Resonance of Fate I've heard very good things.
"Quick Issac, shoot the limbs off of this. Now shoot the limbs off of this. And this. And this. Now shoot the tendril in it's weak point FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE. Now repair a section of the ship."

So you don't like that instead of shooting enemies in the head the game rewarded you for shooting the appropriate limbs? And its linearity?
Have you played RE4 and do you have the same issues with that?
For clarity here I am genuinely curious as to your responses, this is not a "Why are you so wrong" reply.

Although really if you're renting from Blockbuster or another brick and mortar store, you are getting mega ripped off

It was. I made the thread for it.
"History is re-written by the winners."
Now, what about Metro 2033? Is it any good?
