Recommend me PS1 Games.

Long story short: I found my old slim PS1, and the only game I still have from it and play is Metal Gear Solid 1. Since I'm moving out, I'm thinking about bringing it along to try and grab some old classics that I probably missed out on, seeing as how when I actually used this system I never had money to buy games.

So recommend me good PS1 Games to make me consider packing this system for my move!

Ooh. My bad not checking back! I'll browse that thread, thanks!

EDIT: As far as what I'm interested in, I'll play pretty much anything if I'm encouraged too by enough people.

I remember thinking Jet Moto was indeed awesome. Still sort of wish they made another one.

Okay, so please bear in mind that the games I recommend I haven't gone back to, so who knows what's Nostalgia and what's actually good.

    Colony Wars
    Vagrant Story
    Chrono Cross
    Xenogears
    Klonoa

I second/third/whatever final fantasy VII and tactics - easily two of my favorite games for the PS1. Crash bandicoot: warped is a fun game too. If you like hack n slash Medieval is a decent game.

    Einhänder

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einhander

A 2.5D Scrolling shooter game done by Square, and probably one of my favorite games ever. I think IGN listed it as the #1 side scrolling shooter of all time a while back, and it received great reviews overall when it released way back in 1998.

It is simultaneously one of the most fun and challenging games I have ever played. Soooo much stuff coming at you, and the replay value was great, regardless of how hard the game could be sometimes.

<3 this game so much I'm looking for it on EBay right now, as well as a way to play it again since my PS2 slim doesn't like PS1 discs anymore =(

    Anyways, find it, play it!

All of these games are gold. But man, Musashi is *so* much fun.
It's a top down action rpg with a cutsey art style and a great sense of humor about itself.
    Super replayable, too.

    To add to the lists:
Tiny Tank - 3rd person shooter
    Tomba 1/2 - Sidescrolling platformer
    Lunar 1/2 - JRPG
    Legend of Dragoon - JRPG
    Star Ocean 2 - JRPG
Parasite Eve 1/2 - Action RPG (Both are good, but they did a really good job with 2)
    Legend of Legaia - JRPG
Breath of Fire III/IV - JRPG
    Megaman 8 & Megaman X4 - Platformer(5 & 6 to a lesser extent)
Wild Arms - JRPG (I think there is a remake of 1 for some system. If you can, play that. The graphics are pretty bad, even for a ps1 game. :|)
    Tales of Destiny - JRPG
    Digimon World 2 - JRPG (Not 1 >:0)
    Saga Frontier - JRPG
    Gex Series - Platformer
    Rayman - Platformer
Shadow Madness - JRPG (Lots of fun)
Metal Slug X - Side scrolling shooter
Xenogears - JRPG (Reiterating for great justice)

And I really must second (third/fourth) Castlevania SOTN. It is concretely the best one, by far.

I could go on and on, and I will if you want me to, but that should be good for now.
I only had a ps1 for like six years. :|

Edit: Oh, and Chrono Cross (Sequel to Chrono Trigger) has arguably one of the best soundtracks ever, and has a great story and lovable characters.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27-DsLJ76aA

    Please play Chrono Cross.

Double Edit: Dammit, I'm starting a new game now. >:| Look what you made me do!

    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Ape Escape
    Spyro 1+2

Well shit I thought I would be the only one to recommend this. APE ESCAPE IS AWESOME. The only reason it wasn't the best game on the PS1 was because of FF 7.

Also seconding the 7th, 8th and 9th FF games, especially 7 as it's arguably not only as the best FF on the PS1 but the best one period. The spiros are good as well but if we're talking PS1 platformers Crash bandicoot is a must, they're all good but CB 3 warped stands out as the best for me. The crash cart games are well worth a try too.

I know you already said metal gear but if you can get a copy of MGS special missions it's well worth it. No doubt a bunch of people here will reccomend tomb raider 1, 2 and 3 and if you like puzzles then go for it, they are great games. The second was my personal favourite.

I believe you can also get GTA 1 and 2 on the PS1 so if you havn't played either of them now is as good a time as any. Pretty much all the games here stand the test of time but the GTA's do it better than most.

Since there's already multiple votes for FF tactics ( and this is another vote!)

If like old school rpg's, the FF chronology and Anthology packs are nice, they come with 2 games each, eg; there's a 1/2 pack, a 3/4 pack and a 5/6 pack.

The first or 2nd tony hawk if you're curious what skating games were like before they got WAY WAY out of hand combo-wise heh.

oh, and another vote for chrono cross too

I'm just going to make a note about Xenogears

If you're not a huge JRPG fan, but only kinda like them (like me), and if you haven't played Xenogears before, you might find it incredibly difficult to get into.

I got it off Goozex maybe a year and a half ago and got up to some sewer area and just hit a brick wall. There is also a lot of talking.

So I won't say it's a bad game, but it's maybe not for everyone.

(by contrast I can re-play FFVII over and over again, but that was pretty much THE GAME when I was younger so I'm going to chalk it up to nostalgia)

God damn there were so many awesome games on the PSX/One.

Bushido Blade is the coolest fighting game. No health bars! You hit someone in the legs with your sledgehammer, and they have to crawl around the arena...

Crash Team Racing. Best kart game ever. Mario can go fuck himself, CTR shits on Mariokart from a great height.

    Medievil was fantastic.

Resident Evil (all its incarnations, I love them all - on the PSOne, RE2 is the bestest).

    Abe's Oddysee (+ Exodus)

    Spyro oh god yes.

    Ratchet and Clank fucks yes.

    Tomba 1 + 2 holy shit yes.

    Cooooooooool BOARDERS!!!

    Silent Hill 1 + 2

    Front Mission 3

    Command and Conquer Red Alert.

Fatal Frame (only played the first one).

Jade Cocoon - it fucks Pokemon in the ass.

    Ace Combat 2.

    FFVII.

    Kurushi.

    What I consider 'must-buys' bolded...

I could keep listing all day, as there are nearly 8,000 games for the PS1. Even if only 5% of them are must-buys, that's a very long post....

    Xenogears
    Legend of Dragoon
    Monster Rancher
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
    Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Carmageddon (I only played it on pc, but I can't imagine it's any less awesome on psx)
Evil Dead: Hail to the King (only if you're a big Evil Dead fan)
Fade to Black (I played it on PC. I can't guarantee it translated well to psx)
Gauntlet Legends is good fun for some 2 player action
