Story
Dr. Alex J.* Mercer is having a bad fucking day. He's just woken up on a slab, he's getting shot at by MIBs, and he's turned into H.P. Lovecraft's worse nightmare.

He's the Prototype.

And now he has to fight an insane Generals fascist taskforce, a zombie horde slowly taking over Manhattan, and the loss of his own humanity. On the plus side, he can karate kick Comanches.

Here's out Metacritic, which gives it a 78, describes it:

You are Alex Mercer, the Prototype: a shapeshifter with amazing powers of combat, destruction, and deception. Consume targets for their form and memories to assume a perfect disguise, or instantly transform your body into an array of deadly biological weapons, cutting your way to the heart of the conspiracy forty years in the making. Stalk the streets of New York City, searching for the life you lead before. Take the form of anyone in your path, using an arsenal of identities to confound, exploit or annihilate your enemies. Mankind is your mask. Wage a secret war against factions with complex agendas of their own, out to capture or kill you. They are your greatest threat and the key to the secrets of your past. Confront them, find those responsible and make them pay. Shapeshifting: Attack with brutal and devastating powers; instantly triggering hundreds of power combinations (Attack, Defensive and Sensory). Disguise: Assume the perfect disguise by transforming into any character and assuming the victim's powers, skills and abilities. New York City is your hunting ground! Jam-packed, vibrant, fully interactive city filled with thousands of people and enemies out to destroy you. Delve to the bottom of a conspiracy that has haunted the American government for decades. Who is responsible for your condition?

This game is old and bad

But making an OP for a single-player game that's over a year old now, damn

Gotta respect that dedication at least

It's a solid game, broski. Good action, fun powers, and a neat, if not very original, plot.

There is nothing wrong with this game that dropping it down to easy difficulty doesn't fix.

I just wish I would have known that before playing through most of it.

I really like Prototype. It was utterly forgettable and some of the "events" were complete nonsense for which the developers should be drawn and quartered. That doesn't stop mindless slaughter from being good times.

Also, controlling Alex with a keyboard was worse nonsense than the events themselves. I mean, it never felt like it was the keyboards fault, but always like the game was just spastic and the devs couldn't figure out that tapping a key meant slight movement, not "OH JESUS, DO A 180 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW".

Still, I could hijack helicopters, bomb a base, jump out, transform into an armoured hammerfist-beast and slam down from orbit throwing the entire population into the air. Good times.

I was going to use the New Game + feature to get the last couple upgrades, but I just didn't care enough. I just load up my endgame save so I can smash around a fully infected landscape and holy crap, did I just make mountains come out of the ground?

I might have to give this a try. I gave up about half way because the difficulty spikes were shitting me up the wall. I did this with Red Faction and greatly enjoyed it too.

I still boot it up when I want some over powered bloody slaughter. As for controls, I play on the 360, and it's smooth as butter.

Trust me, easy is the way to go. Alex is supposed to be a holy terror, and on Easy mode he's awe inspiring.

Well, there is -one- thing that can't be fixed by dropping the difficulty.

    End-Game spoilers:
That final boss fight. That was just horrible all around. Not only is it a mostly reused boss fight from about half way through the game, albeit the thing is now just ridiculously more resilient and powerful, but it's also timed. Now that's just bullshit.

Though, for all it's flaws, on some level I did like Prototype, or I wanted to like it, I don't know which. It just wasn't easy to do. Despite all that, after having my PS3 conk out a bit ago with all my saves, I've been contemplating popping it in again to finish off the trophy list. Or, like, everything that isn't the Revisited one. Because screw that.

Prototype was everything I wanted Infamous to be. I never felt powerful in Infamous. I mean, I can shoot lightning for christ's sake, but somehow the game actually makes it seem weak in comparison to the enemies I fought. I may as well have had a pistol and bag full of grenades instead of whacky electro powers. Prototype on the otherhand.. well, you're an nigh unstoppable badass from the get-go and it only gets better from there.

I think I tolerated this game because I got into insane killing streaks every time I turned it on, to the point that I only had to grind for upgrades once or twice, I just went batshit on bases every other time.

I also beat the final boss with 1 second left since I realized super arms + bombs/rockets/fuel tanks = victory.

Yep. Prototype had some awesome features - when you're dashing towards an enemy base and jump as a tank shell takes out their gates, and then find yourself running up the gates as they're blown through the air? Well, that's pretty fuckawesome.

On the other hand, Hulk had
    +better story
    +fun, "epic" boss fights
    +smoother combat
+no stupid radial menu to select powers
+area of effect specials that were a helluva lot cooler than Alex Mercer's Tentacle Storm, Spike Forest and... Biomass Cannon Thingie.

    Of course, Prototype's got
    +gore
    +violence
    +gore
    +HD
    +gory violence.

Plus you can rip Hilary Clinton in Twain, assume her form, and rip open the roof of a tank and kill the man inside. In fact we need a video of Hilary destroying conservative American, hunting down gun loving Americans and impaling our religious values while breaking downing our castle walls with streams of socialist rhetoric.

but yes this game is fun for just the pure chaos you can create. and bonus points for awesome gliding.

    No prob

I suppose you are right story wise

But even though I love Prototype, I'm not gonna lie and say there weren't some issues, and I'd love a sequel with better combat, better enemies, cooler bosses.

You get so many badass attacks, and either your enemy dies too fast to use them, or it's an enemy that isn't affected by them.

One of the generic NPC types wondering around Manhattan is a lady that looks like Hilary Clinton, in a vague way.

Right well since we have a Prototype thread I can now justifiably go on a rant about why everyone who has trouble with boss fights is turbbl:

Reason #1) The Whipfist. This will seriously handle every single boss fight up until the final two. Run around and poke them with the Whipfist how hard is it to think of something as obvious as this jesus christ!

Reason #2) Second to last boss fight spoilers
OH MAN GUYS ELIZABETH GREENE IS SO FUCKING HARD SHE'S ONLY COMPLETELY IMMOBILE AND LEAVES ME ABLE TO RUN AWAY AND HEAL AT ANY TIME OF MY CHOOSING OHHH NOOO.

This shit is inexcusable. If you are complaining about Elizabeth Greene you are literally the worst. Run up a building, do the sword drop, run away as necessary. This isn't hard.

    Reason #3) Final boss spoilers
Just throw shit. No really that's all there is to it. Maxed out Muscle Mass, throw shit. It's not even hard, you should have somewhere in the vein of a minute and a half to two and a half minutes to spare depending on how little you suck. Listen for his particularly angry roar because that means he's about to do a Devastator.

Complain all you will of other things but the bosses in Prototype are easy as hell.

Oh hey, I should probably finish this game. I remember I really enjoyed it too but got totally obsessed and then fed up with getting gold in the challenges.

This game may have been a bit clunky and rough around the edges but it definitely got large interactive crowds right. One time a friend of mine spent a solid 20 minutes just running up and down a busy footpath with a car just knocking people into the air, which I'll admit is a pretty awesome sight.

I think my greatest complaints with this game was how badly the plot was presented once you hit the halfway point of the plot and how easily it was to get juggled by the massive amounts of RPG fire you'd get during the later stages of the game. I also hated those fucking supersoldiers since you had no decent way to stagger or throw them, which meant they almost had a free pass to backbreak your ass if you tried to engage them in melee.

I don't understand the people complaining about the difficulty. I beat the last boss on normal on my first try (though I had pretty much no time to spare). There were a few difficult missions, but nothing I couldn't get through in a couple of attempts.

I think people have been spoiled by the newest generation of action games in which you never die. I mean, you can play a game like Assassin's Creed and never really find yourself in danger. When a game forces you to retry a mission a few times, it's not an "unreasonable difficulty spike", that was the norm before the advent of checkpoints.

I thought it was a challenging enough game without being impossible. Some of the events are ridiculously hard, but no one is forcing you to complete them.
