Wolves are coming back because of the presence of the three wolf moon t-shirt, it has given them unnatural power. They hunt in packs of hundreds now and fear neither man nor steel.

I think they're both pretty nice, actually. I guess the rectangular design would be less jarring, but they're both good.

Japanese subnational flags all really take the approach of the national flag: a design, generally circular, of some sort, in the middle (one or at most two colors for that), and then a solid-color background.

And the vast majority of those designs are pretty awesome.

    A sample:

    Chigasaki
    jp-14-ch.gif

    Koga
    jp-01-ko.gif

    Nanao
    jp-17-nn.gif

    Higashikagawa
    jp-37-hi.gif

    Ito
    jp-22-it.gif

And it's like that in every city in the country.

I've always liked Israel's flag. It's a simple, centered design that uses an easily recognizable symbol, the Star of David. I also like that its layout and colors are based on Jewish prayer shawls.

If the American flag gets changed, it will definitely be a simple redesign. The stars and stripes are iconic, if a bit tacky.

I'm glad Canada has a simple, easily recognizable and fairly unique national symbol. Even without the flag, the maple leaf can stand on its own.

i think that a maple leaf is kind of a dumb idea for a national symbol

but damn if it doesn't make a handsome, iconic flag

Some finnish city and county Coat-of-arms. Some of them are even recently designed (in 90:s). Maybe its the heavily regulating them that keeps them looking heraldric, not corporatish.

Local weasel representing now defunct province and my home city Ice-hockey team.

Now what US-flag really need is more weasels. Maybe 13 weasels to represent the original 13 colonies on a field.
or 13 crying eagles instead of stars, if you want more American animal.

    we have the same thing

as in, heavy regulation of what counties, cities and municipalities can do with their coat of arms

    it's a good idea

Red is, after all, one of the handsomest colors you can have a on a flag.

The real mishap is when you get two flags that end up, by coincidence, looking like each other (Burma and Taiwan).

"You know how everyone's agreed that stars are good on flags?"

    "Of course.

"You know what's better than just a few stars?"

    "What?"

    "A few dozen."

With the combination of lots of stars and lots of stripes, I always thought the US flag was incredibly old-fashion looking, like something modern that was styled after very busy medieval heraldry. But that's just me.
