Better safe than sorry. Go to a doctor. We're not doctors. I could have been a doctor...but I'm not.

To help you not freak out, benign thyroid lumps are really common.
But, what An-D said: gland lumps are always see doctor now stuff. Especially in your neck. Even a harmless lump could get in the way of something important if it's left alone too long.
yeah already called for an appointment, stupid local clinic is closed on weekends though
I wouldn't worry too much about a couple of days, even if it is infected that shouldn't be a problem. If things get worse (intense pain, nausea, fainting, etc.) I hope I don't need to tell you ER NOW!!!!!! but that's really unlikely.
Yeah, sounds exactly like a swollen lymph nodes: I used to get them ALL the time, and still do occasionally. Weird bumps on the side of my neck that hurt real bad? First time I got one I flipped my crap at school and went home. I've never gone to the doctor for them, mainly because my mom is a nurse and assured me that they're not a big deal, but obviously your situation is different what with your family history, you have every right to make an appointment and get checked out.

doesn't help that watching 9/11 vids is making me uncomfortable
thanks for the advice thus far!
Terrorists are going infecting your... something something..
Even in the worst case you'll still be okay. A friend of mine had one and cut that bitch open himself which is a nasty and horrible thing to do. Going to the doctor straightened everything out and things were lovely again without any fuss.

this feels fairly deep, attatched to the area between my neck and my jaw.. i can't imagine getting a hot, sanitized scalpel and tearing into the fucker myself

Round about the same area actually. But definitely never try it.
The man would like, kill bears and stuff. Real woodsman.
Guess he saw something he didn't like on his body and thought knives were the solution (they typically work for him)
He actually thought it was some big ass pimple and was like juicing the sucker as well.
But after cutting it open it continued to bleed for quite a while and I think that's when he made his appointment.
Spoiler:
Actually once when working at a kids camp with him I had a huge cluster of warts down my arm. I'm talking like at least 30-40 of these guys. He had a very very sharp knife of some sort (I believe it was made of the jaw bone of a bear that attacked him) and we decided that on a day off we'd get drunk and he'd cut these off (I had tried many solutions including the doc).
When that lovely drunken night came we realized we left his knives in the car.
He removed all the warts with his bare hands. I still have the blood covered shirt as well.
He tried to make a smiley.
It's a crappy cell pic, but the Wild Turkey as a sanitizer hurt more then the actually ripping and tearing.
No scars either. The warts were very.. surface oriented.

OP, while I would definitely get it checked out, lymphoma is a pretty big jump. You're doing the right thing by getting it checked out, and there's absolutely no reason to worry until the doctor gives you one. Swollen glands are pretty common.
The avalanche has already started; it is too late for the pebbles to vote.
It could be a number of harmless things. I'd go to the doctor just to be safe (and especially with the history of Lymphoma in your family), but I doubt it's that. My lymphnodes swell up to about the size of a walnut every time I'm sick, or have allergies. I've gotten it checked out due to being worried as hell, but they just turned out to be irritated.
They are some sort of nodes for your endocrine system, lymph nodes usually as Alyce says. I have one that has been swollen for several YEARS now and its fine. Blood test and everything. They usually just mean you're ill or something.
Wait a couple of weeks then go doctors is my advice.
Sore lumps are extremely unlikely to be due to cancer. It's most likely due to an infection.
Is the pain constant, or does it come and go, especially with meals (salivary gland stones can do that)? Has it been fluctuating in size? Have you had any other infections recently?
A couple years ago I had the exact same thing, thought it was a swollen saliva gland or lymph node. Trouble was, it never went away. Then suddenly about 6 weeks later it began to balloon in size. By the time I saw a doctor it was about 6cm diameter.
Turns out it was a branchial cleft cyst. More common in small children, but not unheard of in adults. It results when a pocket in the cartilage of your neck begins to fill with fluid (in my case it was after a bad sinus infection). By the time surgery was scheduled and I was ready to have it removed it was over 15cm diameter, and was pressing on my jugular and several important nerve clusters.
Only when it really began to balloon up past 10 cm did it hurt, and that was just from the pressure of the massive blob on my neck..
A photo taken around when I first saw a doctor. It went from little lump to this big in a couple days:

Oh hey, I just had one of these a couple months ago
It was an infected lymph node, leftovers from a cold I had. They gave me antibiotics and told me to drink more water, and it went away in about a week
Two years ago, I also had one of these. Like Usagi, it turned out to be an infected lymph node. They gave me antibiotics and it went away in a week or so.
In short, go see a doctor; it's probably nothing big.

I had the same kind of thing; got sick, got better-ish, but a week or two later got a lump in the pelvic area... freaked out, went to the dr, they did some blood tests and said if it got bigger to check back in a week if it was bigger, and the tests came back clean for cancers/etc and it went away in a week or two
But part of the reason for being fine with waiting was the completely clean blood tests for signs of leukemias; so go to the doctor and get it checked out. If you've lost weight recently / having night sweats, they said those were also troublesome symptoms.

no other infections, hasn't changed in size
