If you know of a good band or website that's giving away legit free music downloads, post the links here and I'll edit them into the OP.

Formatting Rules - please try to follow these if submitting a link, though it isn't essential.
  • Music is listed in alphabetical order by artist. Artist names are in normal text, music links are bold.
  • Links to entire albums are in Gray.
  • Artists offering a regular (eg. weekly) free download have their music link highlighted in Dark Orange.
  • If the music is free, but with strings attached (you have to enter your e-mail or make an account first), the music link should be bookended by tildes.
  • If the music is free but the artist gives you the option to pay for it if you want, it will be bookended by dollar signs.
  • Where possible, the artist's name should be a link to their homepage or Wikipedia entry.
  • If this sounds too complicated then just throw the link and band name up however you want, and I'll do the rest.
  • You can write a description of the song/album/band next to the link as well if you want, but no more than ten words per item in the interests of streamlining.
  • If you are submitting a Frequently Updated Source, simply put a bolded link followed by a brief description.

    Always worth looking in to,

    KEXP

Look into not only their song of the day downloads but also their very large volume of music available through their On Demand tab.

this dude makes like a billion albums a month and releases em all for free: Senmuth. His last.fm bio says "Senmuth’s musical style has its origins in doom metal, industrial and ethnic music, but his newer albums are calmer and more progressive and experimental." so yeah it's mostly pretty decent

From I think a few years ago already, but still damn good.

EDIT: Hey - this offer is still up!

The dude from Abandoned Pools (Tommy Walters) teamed up with a dude named Ross Golan who's also pretty good to make Glacier Hiking, and with Tommy's connections from making the Clone High theme song was able to get a Glacier Hiking song on an episode of The Hills awhile ago.

From the day it aired and still going, you can input your e-mail and get a download link sent to you for:

Okay back from dinner, OP updating soon, also going to start a separate section for "Download of the day" type sites since it won't be practical to list all their songs separately.

Edit: List updated save for Beasteh's, I'll come back for that one. Don't sweat the formatting for now guys, I'll probably change it around a bit until I settle on something as reader-friendly as possible

Okay list's all up to date, KEXP's having some technical issues right now so I'll put them in later when I can see what to link to.

Quick question: Do you prefer the links in the list to be direct downloads (i.e. you click on them and the mp3 downloads without you navigating away from the page) or just links to the page where you can get the downloads? The former isn't always possible, depending on how the individual websites are set up, but so far I've included that where I can.

Steven McDonald, of the band Redd Kross, took the idea of "what if The White Stripes had a bassist?" and got to work.

His creation was the album Redd Blood Cells. It was a free release on his site as he finished each song after the White Blood Cells album came out, then later as an entire album for a while.

He's since taken the entire album down, with the idea that the P2P community would let it propagate. You can find torrents of it, though I don't know if we can link to those sites still even if it's a free release.

Either way, he still has up one track - his version of

he was going to take a break from any major projects but then David Fincher was all 'hey come do the soundtrack to The Social Network.'
