That rumor was so widespread they actually included it in the obituary bio in the newspaper where I use to live in NC.

I always think of that as a way for young men to explain why they watched Mr. Rodgers. "Oh sure I learned about sharing, but did you know he had full tats and he killed a shit ton of guys? Mother fucker is stone cold!"

    There. I said it.

    That's seriously fucked up.

I don't think that this is accurate.

I'm fairly certain that you still have access to VA health care if you're discharged for being gay. If you've served in Iraq or Afghanistan you should receive health care for 5 years as long as you weren't dishonorably discharged (and I'm pretty sure that being chaptered for being homosexual won't result in a discharge less than honorable).

Got to play some LOTRO on Saturday for the first time in quite a while. Is it just me or is the Great Barrow fucking hard now compared to before the f2p changes?

I was in a decent group - full party of 6 with 2 minstrils (healers), a gaurdian (tank), warden and champion (melee dps) and loremaster (cc) of appropriate level. We got stomped down hard. Got to that room where you go down those rickity steps into a big room with pillars that has some undead "caller" guy who summons those worms that have a huge AOE and could not beat it.

What are the practical uses for functions in mathematics? Are they ever used in programming? We're learning functions in math right now and they're really simple to manipulate so it would be cool if I could use them for something.

Have you covered infinite series? Taylor Series (and other expansions) are a neat thing you can do related to functions. EG: It's how a computer or calculator will compute a sine or cosine.

You can write a program that can vary how many terms to include in the series expansion and calculate the speed vs. accuracy tradeoff.

edit: something simpler: try using different easing functions in an animation to see how they affect the overall look of it. EG: A linear vs a quadratic vs a logarithm etc...

Nah we haven't gotten that far. He's going really slow. Real basic stuff.

Ok, even for the basic stuff here is something to think about. Usually functions are thought of as having a single input (eg: a number) and an output (eg: also a number or possibly undefined).

You can also think about a function as a map from one set of many inputs (sometimes called a space) to another set.

For a given function imagine if you fed into it, one at a time, every Real Number. What does the resulting set of numbers look like? EG: consider the funciton f(x) = 1/x. First just consider what happens if you feed into it every number > 0. It takes everything between 0 and 1 and smears them out over the entire rest of the number line and at the same time squashes everything > 1 down into the space between 0 and 1. All of this without skipping any numbers or duplicated any results (eg: it is "isomorphic").

Anyway, thinking of functions not just in terms of single inputs and outputs but in terms of spaces is a big part of differential geometry and topology.

Oh okay, I can see how this might be useful, though I only have a basic understanding of programming. Thanks.

    http://www.girightshotline.org/discharges/homosexual/fact-sheet/index.shtml

In most cases in which the sole basis for discharge is homosexual conduct, even those involving homosexual acts, the characterization of service should be Honorable, General (under Honorable Conditions), or an Entry Level Separation. However, many cases have misconduct issues other than homosexual acts associated with them and these issues can result in a characterization of service of Under Other Than Honorable Conditions (OTH). If a member is discharged on the basis of homosexual conduct, that reason will be noted on the discharge document and that information may stigmatize the veteran (and possibly limit employment opportunities) in the future. A characterization of Under Other Than Honorable Conditions (OTH) will result only if the military finds that, during the current enlistment, the member attempted, solicited, or committed a homosexual act under aggravating circumstances.

I'm going to pull a Will and say that being a Wrestling fan and a functional adult seems to be a grand work in Cognitive Dissonance. No, I don't hate fun. Wrestling is just for uneducated rednecks and children.

So are monster truck shows, tractor pulls, and drag racing (well not so much drag racing), but my god do I love them, even as a cultured, hipsterish adult. Gotta remember your roots.

oh god you probably go to those things and drink pbr don't you

Not in a long time actually, because the last monster truck show I went too pissed me off. First off they wouldn't let you cruise the floor and talk to the drivers/inspect the trucks, which is like the whole point in going since it's pure machine porn for a guy.

Second they shortened the demolition derby stuff to make room for goofy quad races obviously inspired by the WWF model. They had this goofy USA vs. Canada bullshit, Canada won the race, but then the American leader challenged the Canadian leader to a head to head showdown, and then the american dude ran out of gas 6 inches from the finish line. I never did figure out which was worse, how lame the idea was, or how much the crowd (of mostly adults mind you),ate it up completely.

And yes, I've enjoyed a refreshing PBR from time to time. Even an Old Milwaukee or two, though I doubt the hipsters will ever pick that up as a cool beer to be seen drinking.

I don't think I've ever won five games in a row

Okay...I take it back. It was four games in a row, and during the fifth, with our team winning, two of our members left in the span of 30 seconds. Not disconnected, actually left.

No point in playing after that, so we surrendered. But we would have won :P

Its def. been a bit of a slog. :/

There's been enough good there to keep me involved, but just barely. Probably why it is taking me as long as it is to finish the game.
