So earlier today the NASA craft EPOXI passed within 700 km (in space that's really pretty damn close) of the nucleus of comet Hartley 2 as scheduled. It took photos of Hartley 2. These photos are fucking cool as shit.

expoxi_medres_hartley2.jpg

Phil Plait of the blog Bad Astronomy gives his impression of the photos if you care to read.

SO
GODDAMN
COOL

    I seriously hope it happens.

It seems like a manned Mars mission has been "about 20 years away" forever.

2030 is 20 years from now

Consider where our manned space program was 20 years ago in 1990.

If we keep going at this pace we are going to get to Mars in approximately neverhundred years

Actually, we could go to Mars relatively quickly. It's not really a matter of technology so much as it is political and societal will to do so. With a different political environment that's not so inundated with nutjobs and understanding of the fact that this is an inherently risky endeavor and that there are qualified personnel who would still jump at the chance to go in spite of the risk, we could probably pull it off with at most a decade of focused funding and public support.

So yeah, not likely to happen any time soon. :(

Republicans accuse Obama of killing the manned space program because he's following through with the Bush administration's plan to retire the shuttle, and canceling an expensive boondoggle that wasn't going very well in the first place, in favor of letting private companies handle the (comparatively) mundane business of getting people and supplies to and from the ISS, at a fraction of the cost, so NASA can focus on more ambitious exploration projects.

They effortlessly turn "Obama's killing the space program" into a meme that will never, ever die.

Republicans take congress, actually kill the manned space program, blame Obama. Everyone believes them.

Have I got this about right?

This attitude is incredibly short sighted and Phil Plait does a good job explaining why.
