 I dunno about the former, but I can certainly help you find the latter. I know of three good places to find cheese within easy walking distance of downtown.

I dunno. You seem pretty cool :P

I really wish I had more spending money. I could go for some fancy fancy cheese so bad right now.

Do your local places offer any small hunk type of deals? One that I go to offers the hunks which are left over from tastings at about $2 each, makes a nice lunch with fruit and some bread.

You know, I haven't checked. What do I search for on google? "Cheese shop?"

Most of what I get is from Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, other expensive places etc.

I dunno if I'd take the isrealies ques on security. At least not harbor security...

They're totally right about using intelligence and threat analysis instead of backscatter gadgets and confiscating toothpaste, though.

I tend to think it is because the Israelis have long since come to the realisation that security is a mitigation, and not a prevention exercise. I don't think the US has really come to grips with the notion that terrorist attacks are going to happen whatever you do.

Yeah, that's very likely to be a big part of it too. TSA is looking for some 100% certain method, but they're still just going after symptoms by hunting explosive liquids and stuff.

They are purely reactive. Try a new method it gets by them, then they close the barn door after it happens. It's the worst kind of security.

No. He had cheese when he was here for PAX. I took him to a couple fancy cheese shops, in fact. Normally he's in the barren cheese wasteland of Alaska, so he's jonesing for a little good curdled milk.

    Safeway usually has non-cheddar/America/Swiss...

Store bought cheeses like that tend to be bland and lacking the oomph a proper cheese from a specialty shop has.

Try 'specialty cheese shop' or 'gourmet cheese shop' or even 'cheesemonger'; go for ones whose websites list specific creameries and dairies, specific cheeses by name, that sort of thing. If they don't have a website you can always call them and ask them for recommendations based on a certain type of cheese you like. If they seem knowledgeable in their answers then you've probably hit gold. If you do find a good shop, make friends with the owner/regular workers, it's worth it.

The alternative though is a pre-emptive "We need to search all your underwear because one of you might have PETN in a pair", which sounds retarded on its face. Security kind of by default is only looking for known types of threats.

I rather like the idea of intelligence/threat analysis instead, but ooooh boy will that throw up a shitstorm when people feel harassed because they get stared at.

But that's the direction the world is moving. There's a lot more authoritarian surveillance in the pipeline.

I think supermarkets have massively improved when it comes to cheeses, since I was a teenager. Now, even when I visit the supermarkets in the small town near my parent's farm in deepest rural NZ there usually are a couple of dozen boutique brands (less varieties though) in a separate area from the traditional large block of cheddar area.

Still not as good as having a proper cheese shop, but good enough for most occasions

Your general grocery store has gotten better, it's true. Still mostly factory cheeses, but a better selection than there was 5 years ago, certainly better than 10 years ago.

I'd like to know what happened to the explosives sniffer machines. I went through one going to see the Statue of Liberty 5 or so years ago, you just step into it, it puffs some air at you and you're done, pretty unobtrusive. They were all the rage, then suddenly nothing.

I'm not super thrilled with the trip to the dentist today.

The nerve on the tooth where the filling was done feels jangly, I dunno. Does not feel great.

Also, the tooth was right in front of my gold crown, and the idiot dentist managed to get some grey filling gunk on the crown, so it has an ugly grey splotch on it now, which seems to be permanent.

Kinda. Being security means that you're playing defense, but that doesn't stop you from doing valid threat assessments. Done correctly you should be looking for what you missed. The TSA doesn't ever do any proactive thinking. They aren't thinking about future threats, merely reacting to the ones that happen.
