Don't do either--give to charities that you select beforehand, like Oxfam.

It's probably because Peter Singer said it's where he gives (although I've only heard that second hand, but it was from my friend who did her honors in ethics and society so I trust her).

Man, I'm attracted to this girl in my Spanish class and she seems to like me too, but we just don't have a strong rapport.

    what do you mean?

    build a rapport

We've been seeing each other twice a week since the semester started, and we walk to the bus together. Plus, it's Spanish, so we have plenty of chances to talk to each other during class.

Is it unreasonable to think that, if we were especially compatible, that wold be apparent by now?

Maybe you should work on your Spanish : (

Oh don't worry, that's the least of it. We've given it to borderline war criminals like Rumsfeld, as well as all manner of religious psychos like the mormon prophet.

Basketball players are amongst the least awful recipients.

Rumsfeld is deeply wrong, but at least it's not a category error. Giving Rumsfeld a civic honor is like saying 2 + 2 = 5, but giving a basketball player a civic honor is like saying 2 + 2 = balloon.

One time I was in a shady part of LA at night with a friend and this dude ran at our car with a gas can. We were terrified and rolled up our windows and locked our doors.

Dude was just out of gas.

    I felt bad.

Needless to say we dumped the body in a swamp.

New rule: If you're famous, you don't qualify for civic awards. Let's give them to people who do things out of the goodness of thier heart instead of the opportunity for an easy photo op.

I got ambushed by a dude outside of Trader Joe's one day and after the whirlwind of five minutes I was somehow giving $20 a month to Oxfam.

Dude was like "Hey man, we'll ask you to start out with our basic pledge, which is $60 a month."

I was like HEY, I have to eat too.

I just doubled my pledge this month--it's just over 10% of my income now. We'll see how that works out on the "feeding myself" front.

I think summer work will keep me doing okay.

They're forum games. Typically Phallas, but we've had Diplomacy which was popular too, and a few other games. Check the link in my sig for details. If you want to host something, you're pretty much at the head of the queue now :P
