Assuming he does it again, yeah. Seriously, this strikes me as pretty lame. I'll freely admit I didn't bid this year (I do plan to donate some money directly), but if I had I'd be kinda miffed. Seems like he should at least go along with it for a month or two. I mean I know it's for charity, and nobody's gonna feel bad about donating... but $3000? God damn.

It has nothing to do with what you were going to do next year. I just think that if you can reneg on an item for an auction and not have any form of retribution, why shouldn't everyone be allowed to do just that. And then, if that is true, why should anyone bid?
But I suppose its all for the better if you get what you want.
