It's like the bully syndrome, if you're getting picked on for a certain thing and you let on that it bugs you, it's just like blood in the water man. I figure your best recourse is to go completely full-bore on the "being a quebecker" angle long enough that no one ever wants to bring up your quebecker-ness again.

A direct democracy is the quickest way to tyrannical majority rule because people, on the whole, are terrible. A single person acting as a dictator can make more rational decisions than the absolute majority, unless they are certifiably insane. Mobs are prone to emotional swings, fear, and xenophobia. With no checks on their decision making process except themselves, it's a terrible governance structure with nothing to protect the rest of the population.

I don't believe that an unchecked democracy is a good idea in the slightest and a lot of people here agree, but none of us actually think you're a bad person
What you also have to remember, though, is that you took a swing at the US and sounded generally very smug

I approach the subject with a more personalist point of view, i.e persons tend to do good, unless they are psychologically troubled or unhappy. A single person might approach a problem or make decisions in an egotistical way, where a group of people, if they represent the majority, will only make a decision if it is beneficial for the group that they are part of.
When I said ''under certain conditions'', i refer to something one of my politics teacher mentionned once. He said that we could impose a class about ethics and politics before you are allowed to vote. It would be just like getting your driver's license, but for political use (it would also be free). It would act as a filter to the imbeciles or the disinteressed. Of course it wouldnt assure that everybody who comes out of that class has a ''good'' political opinion, but I think it would be better than nothing.
Then again, I am aware of the utopic aspect of that comment, and my knowledge of the english language limits my ability to fully express my political opinions, and I hope there are no misunderstandings about this (e.g. the cuban pork burgers scandal)
Edit; hobnail, posting about my shitty province gets old, and I think people will grow bored of me if I keep talking about it. I dont feel like caricaturing myself as the french canadian stereotype everytime i come here.

I'm not trying to sound smug when I say such things, and to be honest I generally disapprove american politics and international relations (as in ''were the world's police, here have some of our corporations''), but I think thats my french-socialist side biasing me. I guess posting about it on a mostly-north american populated forum aint the brightest idea, too.

I think that history has shown that people are perfectly happy to pick groups out for abuse, without the influence of their leaders, no matter their state. Humans are driven by interest, and if it's in the majority's interest to screw the little guy, they will. People fracture into different groups because we are internally wired to do so. Governments that attempt to force a change in that nature end up as enormous bloodbaths.
I think that the only way for a government to prosper and for the people to be truly happy and equal is to channel self interest into avenues that support the common interest. You have to check people's natural inclination to fuck with each other, while keeping the government (made up of people who have a natural inclination to fuck with each other) in check as well. It's not easy.

As much as I would like to dispute this and harp on the greater good of man, there is a jerk off in seattle trying to develop some tax laws that would undermine the budget of the state and make life harder for everyone. The fact remains that with the right cult of personality, a person could start a jihad against all Americans' with widow's peak.
Skimming that guardian article, I am reminded of a story I heard about Pearl Harbor (might be false). One of the CO's for the central airbases had a strong fear of sabotage being perpetrated by the local Japanese population. To combat this, he gathered all the aircraft in a single area to make them easier to guard. This also made them easier to bomb in the Japanese attack.
Of course, since it was a surprise attack, not that many planes would have survived the runway and would not have made serious dent in the final casualty list among the American forces or prevented the loss of several ships, but still, the logic and result seems similar, IMO [/off topic]
I do hope that the intelligence agencies take not of how this system is making them an easier target. I'm thankful that wikileaks is being this kind of douche rather than the kind that would do serious and malicious acts with this information.

But see, where I live, I dont see anything that makes me lose faith in the common man. We dont get as much crimes and murders as you guys over the border, and most people I speak with have reasonable political opinions. The only problem would be the whole xenophobism towards anglophones thing, but even then its not heinous. We just want to protect our language and some of us wants to have their country. I doubt that if a direct democratie was established in Québec you'd see us exterminate english-speakers.
I can hardly imagine the United States as a direct democratie though, you guys have like 2/3 of the worlds rednecks and half its guns
I believe people mean well, but are often shortsighted and predominantly self interested. This doesn't make them evil or bad, but it does mean that letting the people decide everything leads to even more short sighted and ultimately destructive policy than electing representatives to speak/work for us. Of course politicians can be real fuckers and they can manipulate the masses with fear and/or ignorance, but a representative democracy mitigates that much more than a direct democracy would.

Not right now it's not. What happens when they have more ability to enforce their will on the world around them? With that kind of powers comes temptations, and no matter where you live you are always one charismatic asshole away from a disaster. You don't have to exterminate someone to be oppressive or otherwise unethical. What it boils down to is you trust humanity more than is warranted, and all you have to do to find proof of that is read actual history. Or look at the present world, at all. It is rife with evidence of the opportunistic, self-interested tendencies of our species and our willing to marginalize minorities and ignore their interests and/or suffering.
And yeah you're kinda playing into the stereotype again.

The problem isn't what they would say or do now, it's what they would eventually say or do once the majority has complete power. How long until they pass a law that makes english speaking people unable to own a business? Attend public schools? How long until they pass laws making it impossible to use anything but French in commerce?
Also, you are basing your political opinion on a general poll of people you know. Those are singular, sane people. The majority is not a person, it is a group of people. Mobs take very little time to reach a boiling point, and are more susceptible to quick, irrational actions then a normal person, acting alone is.
It isn't a far step from "it isn't heinous, it's just a dislike of these people" to "These people forced their culture on us! We want them out/dead/they don't matter as much as we matter"
Direct Democracy magnifies humanity's ability to consolidate the world into us vs them.
In a direct democracy, people who play Evelynn would have been exterminated by the tyrannous majority long ago. Won't someone think of the Evelynn players?
