I have a case from medge for my 2nd ed kindle, very good build quality on them, looks really nice. if your not going to be taking it many places than a case isnt really neccisary, but you'd probably want one just to be sure if its going in a bag traveling with you often.

    I currently have this
    http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/shop-by-price/under-50-dollars/envelope-laptop-sleeve

Works great at protecting the kindle when I'm traveling and still lets me read the kindle without anything added on to it for weight or bulk.

I'll be keeping mine indoors pretty much all the time, so perhaps a case is a waste of money. I'll use that money to buy a book or two.

    I'll be back for breakfast.

You don't need a "sleeve" per se, because you can't really hurt it. And plenty of people just use them naked.

I opted to get a nice Cole Haan leather cover, though, because a) Amazon was blowing them out at half-price (kindle 2) and b) I like the feel and look of leather. But it does increase the weight.

I bought my ladyfriend the one that Amazon has with the light. She loves it!

For what it's worth, I recently got a latest-gen Kindle with the Amazon leather cover + booklight. It does add a bit to the bulk of the device, but not to the point that I'm having a problem with it.

The booklight is very handy and runs off the Kindle's battery at a conservative rate. To give a rough idea, I put the case on the day I pulled the Kindle out of its package and used the booklight about 33% of the time on the way through ~38% of Dune on the battery life the Kindle came with out of the box (I'm not a super fast reader, so this amounted to several hours of reading and the Kindle had maybe a quarter of a charge).

My girlfriend also has the latest-gen Kindle with the same cover (mine is black, her's is the burnt orange) and she is equally pleased with it.

Alternatively, they sell a non-lighted version of the cover for about half the price.

    Destroy what destroys you.

I also use the one with a light. The light is perfectly acceptable, I can read everything without problems in a dark room. The case is sturdy enough, though the kindle wobbles some and worries me, but not too much. The ability to bend the cover all the way back to make it extra thick is nice, sometimes I prefer that to a naked kindle or a book-kindle. And if you do want a naked kindle, it is incredibly easy to remove the thing from the case. Incredibly easy, really really.

I have one of these and I love it, just be aware that it does suck down the battery much faster. Took half the charge to get through the first wheel of time book, when I was always using the light.

But the cover has a nice feel to it, and gives you more of that book feeling.

The wife and I also got M-Edge cases for our 2nd gen Kindles.
    This one: http://www.medgestore.com/products/kindle2-latitude.psp

I actually really like the slightly added bulk, as I felt the caseless Kindle was almost too thin. I was afraid I would break the thing in half or something.

You can also get the E-luminator thing for the Latitude case. I prefer a light with an independent battery, as to me having a light use the Kindle's battery sort of defeats the purpose of the long-life Kindle battery. Especially when travelling.

I love the Amazon leather case, but beware. There is strong anecdotal evidence that the hooks in the case can touch Kindle internals causing frequent reboots. I have experienced this first hand. Some people have taken to shaving down a bit of the edge of the top hook, though I have yet to try it.

I picked the Belkin Grip for my new Kindle a few months ago and it's exactly what I hoped it would be. Decent protection from general scuffing and dust and animal hair between reads. Lightweight, easy to carry and put the Kindle in or pull it out. And not made of animal remains. =^)
