GOP-Controlled House to Kick Off by Reading Constitution Aloud

GOP-controlled House will read the founding document aloud on Thursday.

Though it has been inserted as text into the Congressional Record before, the supreme law of the land has never been read aloud before in the body known as "the People's House."

Could we finally be looking at a new era of transparency in Washington?

The right of the people to be blahblahblah in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable blahblahblah, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by blah, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a blahblah and blahblah trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where in. . you know what fuck it.

They stripped the US Territories and DC of their voting ability in the house. The votes were pretty much just symbolic, but still.

Also, Glyph, how will reading the Constitution promote transparency?

There was a Republican on television the other day touting the whole constitution reading thing, and he basically said "uh, we're not reading the parts that don't apply anymore".

If it was up to me, they'd just spend about 4 hours reading and re-reading Article 1. And then there'd be a quiz.

Is this the part where we rehash the fact that we're pretty unhappy with the fact that this is still going on but 1) it's not entirely (or even mostly) Obama's fault and 2) fixing things a little at a time is a hell of a lot better than actively making them worse or FUCKING STARTING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE?

This seems like a big waste of time to me. What is accomplished by doing this, besides the TV time and the token appeal to the party's base?

It would be great if they found something in there that explained what equal rights protection meant to them in very clear terms since they appear to have a hard time understanding it.

Well, I very clearly remember a bunch of Obama stump speeches wrt Gitmo about how the right thing isn't always easy, and the rule of law should always be followed.

I also remember McCain taking a pragmatic approach and getting skewered for it.

So, while reading the Constitution is kind of a stunt and probably deserving of a few snarky responses, I'm not about to let a comment go by that implicates the left has the moral high ground when it comes to consitutional issues.
