I know you didn't mean it as such, but it's kind of annoying when someone starts piping up that they "just don't get it" about something that is clearly just not for them.
You won't see me talking about how I just can't understand why people are attracted to vagina, even though I have zero use for vagina.
Because it's unnecessary. And defending it with allusions to your (I'm guessing very limited, and unsatisfying) personal gay experiences is rather passive aggressive.
passive agressive what now?
but anyway
it's like people not liking achewood
people mention it every time achewood is brought up
but anyway you said that jacob's ass was fine and I said no male asses don't appeal to me at all
for me they seem so tacked on
on women it complements the rest of the shapes around that area
on men it's just sort of there
men's upper bodies can be appealing but the ass I just don't get
Okay, abd, time to come up with a storyline for this shit. :P
in a land dominated by the struggle between the old world of the feudal lords and the new world of the mercantilism of the emerging coastal city-states, four mercenaries find themselves in a position to shape the course of the land
I like it! Is the PC one of the mercs, in your view? Because I'm thinking maybe they pick up a front man along the way to do most of the talking, since they're largely not good at that, except for intimidation. They need someone clean and presentable to make connections?
courtier sounds more like something the player could eventually work their way to becoming - if, say, they're working to better the feudal states position.

courtier somewhere that just went tits up
but maybe not a courtier specifically
someone whos neither feudal nor merchant
religious, duh, obvious choice
the player works for or is some religious dude
EDIT: Or maybe a foreigner

ohhh yeah
the PC could be a courtier somewhere
a talking dude or woman
great idea
also, since you asked, which idea I liked: both
Aha! Mercs get paid at the court for eliminating a group of bandits, and figure out along the way that this duchy is about to get overthrown. PC is being treated shittily (which is part of why the duke's in trouble) and asks to come along when he/she sees them leaving. They see the opportunity, and agree to take him/her along. They level automatically with one weapon style, and you choose either one to be good at or a few to be okay with, plus points for conversational skills.
Maybe three mercs (though not tank/DPS/healer because that's cliched) and another NPC or two to fill the gaps? And as you progress in building your network, you send envoys to other powers to strengthen those alliances.

I'm trying to find something along the lines of diplomatic rank, or hierarchies of ambassadors, but I'm not having much luck. Along the idea of 'leveling up' - consul, for a foreigner; bishop-advocate for a religious?
Could have a couple of choices as to how you want to start, a little like Dragon Age. Courtier (leaning/bonuses to persuasion), chief advisor's son (lore/observation), traveling merchant, student in the seminary or temple, maybe?

I'd not like tank DPS healer
I'd like something a bit more original in the way of combat system
but anyway
yeeeess
main point of the game is political intrigue
sometimes achieved through talking, sometime through more... creative means. For example killing people or fucking shit up and saying the enemy did it or threatening people or whatever.
you have wit and cunning and might at your disposal, and you can employ them as morally or amorally as you like
for example, craftily gain the gratitude of some dude who's the key to gaining influence with the local merchant's guild
or kill his son and kidnap his daughter

Harrum: ME2-style recruitment quests for ambassadors to major powers, with optional loyalty-quest analogues to improve it? Also, I'm surprisingly kind of feeling like none of the mercs should be a romance option. One female and one male additional NPC, maybe, for that, but they also need to be critical parts of the story.

yeah. that's always fun.
also it would be fun if appearance and impression on people is a big deal
like, some huge gruff dude in armor with a sword will frigthen people appropriately
but a guy in shiny armor and lovely tabard might strike people as a noble knight
one or the other might work

Yeah. That's pretty scary. It was uploaded three weeks ago, too. He appears to have had this completely planned out for a while. And the sad thing is all the innocent people that died. I think one of them was a 7 - 9 year old girl. I can't remember the age.

Eh, maybe, but Jack Bauer isn't going to make a good ambassador no matter how much you polish him. It's just not his style.
