Fez goes down on March 21st. So not that much time.
Also: Perfect World is getting an expansion on March 2nd. Two new classes and a new Race. It's strange they are doing this at almost the same time Forsaken World is supposed to be released.

I'm digging through Game&Game's current pickings. I'm trying out Tales Weaver which was released ages ago in Asia.
There's some more shit in the catalogue, a CCG game I'm not touching and a FPS that has the "unique feature":
d) The first person aim mode for real shooting
In the first person point of view, a user can aim a weapon and shoot it during a game.
Ground breaking developments...
Some more games that aren't MMOs, but facebook games or just good ol' multiplayer games

There's http://kunioworld.gamengame.com/ which is supposed to be for the International market, but it seems like the whole site is in Japanese (or Korean?).

Then there's http://feelonline.gamengame.com/ which is a dating game in which your goal is to go on dates with real people and find out if you're made for each other. I'm repulsed.
Anyway, feel free to take a peek yourself, I'm always amazed what shitty games the South Korean government is helping now. http://www.gamengame.com Don't worry if it doesn't load on your first try, the servers are in North Korea or something. <_<

*e: Tales Weaver
This game was released 7 years ago in Asia, but it's now getting an international version through Game&Game. It's a cute little 2D game with an actual story line and characters you can tell apart. Combat is slow, resolution doesn't go above 1024x768 and after the intro movie the storyline angle falls flat.
i didn't like it much, but the translation was pretty good, I can imagine other people might like it.
I played Talesweaver 7 years ago, muddling through the korean with friends. It was fun back then, but it has not aged very well, technically or in terms of gameplay.
The combat system is kind of neat in that it's a sort of rhythm based combo system where you chain skills and attacks, but the novelty of it is not worth the narrow focus and super mega ultra grind.

I think they toned down the grind in the early levels, but the combo system did not come up so far. Not that I cared enough after seeing just how ancient the game was. This is a bit of relic from the past and although I encourage adoptions of Asian games, I'd prefer if they'd stick to more recent games.
Aldo can I just say, thank you so much! I used to play Tales Weaver a long time ago when RO was the best MMO in the world and I always wanted to play the english version if it ever came out. I'm going to have a lot of giddy nostalgia coming back to me in the next few days.

Think Gunbound, only up-to-date. Take turns flinging deadly weapons at each others on a 2D field. Playing games nets you experience and money you can use to upgrade your toon. The game is bright and cute and if you know how to aim you'll be successful quickly. Really not all that bad to play for an hour. Game does suffer from a big cash shop that will most likely fuck up any resemblance of balance there was.
If there's an option for making a guild I'll make one on the "Scorpio" server in the US. Anyone else interested in trying this free MMO out should give it a go (and make a cylon).

Salem Free-to-Play MMORPG Game Officially Announced
The Game that has Everyone Buzzing About Permanent Death is Coming to Paradox Connect in 2011
NEW YORK – February 10, 2011 – Paradox Interactive today officially announced Salem, a free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game based in the harsh world of colonial Salem. The game focuses on crafting and player colonies as players discover the new world in a sandbox like environment. The game is being developed by the team at Seatribe and is scheduled to go live in 2011 on the Paradox Connect platform.
Salem has already garnered a lot of interest from the gaming community since it was previewed behind closed doors to members of the media in late January. Known for its controversial permanent death feature, an essential game mechanic that introduces risk as players progress in the new world, Salem is a fresh twist on the MMO genre giving players control of their towns in the game and introducing frontier justice in the open Player-versus-Player (PvP) environment.
"Salem is a free-to-play MMO game that is going to add something new to the genre with the concept of generations rather than just a single character through the game,” said Tom Söderlund, Project Lead for Paradox Connect. “If your character is killed in the game, and believe me it can be dangerous in Salem, their descendent has the ability to pick up where your character left off. The concept of revenge and towns policing themselves and even sanctioning hits on griefers is going to be a really compelling aspect. We know we’ll see some interesting things when the community finally has a chance to play Salem later this year.”
About Salem
Set in a fantastical New England, Salem offers free form Massively Multiplayer gameplay in a persistent, ever-changing, online world. Players take the roles of intrepid colonists from the Old World seeking to make lives for themselves in the New. The colonists are able to use a unique crafting, farming and building system inspired by 17th century alchemy.
Although Salem takes place in a light-hearted gothic setting with a charming and cute art-style, there is also open Player-versus-Player combat and permanent death. Players will also experience creatures based off actual colonist folklore like Squonks, Hidebehinds and of course witches in an open sand box world.
Features:
• Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game
• Persistent and mutable world
• Crafting, farming and building
• Open PvP combat with permanent death
• Free-to-play

Griefing as a game machanic to go against griefing?
Yup, it's gonna be a gankfest, although this had me lol'ing:
If your character is killed in the game, and believe me it can be dangerous in Salem, their descendent has the ability to pick up where your character left off.
If you can instantly pick up where you left off, it's not really permanent death, now is it? It's more like permanent name change on death, which isn't quite the same. I could see maybe having a special chest or NPC that would store some of your stuff for "herlooming" to the next character, but otherwise it's a cop-out.

I'm willing to give Salem the benefit of the doubt; I'll give it a try just because it seems like it might be something different.
I know a lot of people are put off by the permadeath thing and the troubles that might arise from it, and think the game will be terrible as a result. And, hey, maybe they're right.
All I know is that a lot of games that I thought I would really enjoy based on the description turned out to be terrible...so as is usually the case, the true test will be to actually play the game itself rather than judge it ahead of time based on some text.
EDIT: Hmm, no, I guess it wasn't Darkfall I was thinking of. I wonder what it was...

Shadowbane was my favorite MMO for a time. I played a couple months before it ended to the end. The everywhere PVP and city battles were just awesome to me, which I've found out has been in other games, but still, it was new to me at the time.
I don't understand the obsession with MMORPGs and massive outdoor combat, it doesn't work at all for the genre. It is usually laggy, hard to tell what is going on and completely broken in every way in terms of balance. I could understand if the combat mechanics were closer to something like Total War but with an RPG it just doesn't work.

The thing with massive outdoor battles is that they're massive, outdoors and there's all kinds of dudes and gals duking it out. What's not to like?
is what we want to see in action movies. In videogames, we'd like to reach that same level of pure awesomeness.
Technology doesn't allow for this kind of shit to roll out on our gaming devices, but that doesn't stop everyone from trying. There's some gigantic hurdles to overcome and every time it fails in a new and exciting way, but there's tons of people who loved the idea of gigantic PvP battles and it is often the first bullet point on the marketing pitch of free MMOs.
(tangent: LOTRO's developers are slowly getting to the big battles and they have no idea how they're going to do that in game. So far their biggest battles have been in pvp (lag-fest mexican stand-off) and one dragon that you can kill with max 24 dudes, but is easy to handly with 12. The step from 24 dudes fighting a single dragon to Helm's Deep is GIGANTIC. I doubt they'll be able to do Tolkien and Jackson justice here)
I think Planetside was the only MMO where the battles felt massive and I actually enjoyed them. Since there were objectives it was a constant push one way or another across the entire line. WAR on the other hand felt too much like just clashing two large groups together with the rest of the battlefield empty and deserted. More medium scale than anything.
Shadowbane, meh, came into it too late. When it went free and I tried it out I basically came out of the PVP-free area into a large town. Wasn't told shit, didn't have any resources, ventured out into the huge, empty world, found some monsters ridiculously over my level, shrugged and stopped playing.
Darkfall I enjoyed, but small skirmishes were more fun than large scale combat. That just felt far too complicated, fiddly and chaotic, where in Planetside you knew what you had, what you could do and what your role was.
The problem with those massive battle scenes is that they're fun to watch, but they sure as hell wouldn't be fun to actually participate in. Woo, chaos and dying to random crap you didn't see coming because of the chaos.

Good that you bring that up. You didn't level your toon to be a random conscripted farmhand on the battlefield. You're a kick-ass warrior who grinds dragons for breakfast. You get to create the chaos and let the farmhands* suffer while you're on the lookout for enemies** who can actually match your ability.
*ie: NPCs
**other players/boss mobs.
I mean, this'll be near impossible to manage and the big upcoming titles aren't even touching this. I bet this'll be something for the future.
I haven't seen an MMORPG do big battles well though, and I think a big problem with that is the fantasy settings leads to total AOE domination.
RIFT has been doing pretty alright actually on that front.
I think there were up to 400 players or so in one location during one of the world invasions last beta.

But I mean the fights just don't feel that epic, this is coming from DAOC experience. They are just a mess really, it isn't like LOTR or anything it is just a mess. They need to remove AoE spells or nerf them a lot, add unit collision and a few other things to make tanks worthwhile.

It may have been a mess but when you can see other players stretch out into the horizon and the sky is blood red while enemies attack from all directions it does feel kinda epic.
I think unit collision and less sparkly effects would give a more LOTR feeling though like you say.
