    The wife and I tried to get a jump on the V-Day rush at the restaurants by going out last night instead, and it seemed like half of Dallas had the same idea.


    It really made me realize how many completely miserable couples choose that one day a year to go through the motions. I took my wife to the restaurant where I proposed to her, and it's not the fanciest of the fanciest places, but it's pretty nice. Definitely a sportscoat/dress kind of place; I was in a black suit, but open collar with no tie.

    All around us were people simply dressed like clods. The guy at the table next to us was wearing cargo shorts and a baseball cap, which he kept on the entire meal. A woman across from us was wearing a sweatshirt. A young guy with his parents was wearing a basketball warm-up and flip-flops.


    It's the only day of the year this restaurant doesn't enforce its dress code, and I can understand why. The made a ton of money. But . . . ugh.

    After 5 and a half years together, Valentine's Day is not as big a deal as it used to be. Usually, I'm way more extravagant for the anniversary which is in late August.

    I got her a dozen roses, and made her dinner. Steak au Poivre and potato gratin. She picked up the desert. Pretty low key.

    I used to get really depressed by Valentine's Day. Now I think it's cute! Or at least the aesthetic of it, anyway. I don't do much for it though I do try to treat myself to some delicious red velvet cake. <3 Which is sadly harder to get around this time, but the extra effort put into finding it totally makes it taste better.

    I had work followed by class last night, so I had exactly enough time to speed home, cook my wife lobster dinner, eat and speed to class. It was too rushed and not very romantic... but we tried.
