Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Did you get that memo? [JOBS]

I read this as I'm prepping my taxes and...my god. I get the feeling that this is the year I'm going to get really really really screwed. Not looking forward to it at all.

So if you apply for a job online (through a job website like jobsite), how long should you leave it before you start chasing the designated point of contact for a update?

This is for full time permanent work too, not a contract.

Did the site have you send it to the person, (bob@acme.com) or the company's HR eHole (resumes@acme.com)? I'd probably send a note or phone call either way after a week, maybe less if it's a small company.

Yeah there are contact details. Just some of the jobs i've applied for yesterday and i'm just wondering how long i should wait before chasing them. Because its happening, its just a question of time.

If you sent them yesterday, I think Tuesday or Wednesday would be OK. If you have any contacts at the company, now is the time to activate as well. Ideally before, but calling them to say you applied to work for Bob Bobson and if your contact could give you a good reference or even just let Bob know you two have worked together.

Alas i have no contacts within the actual companies. Some of the jobs advertised were actually from recruitment agencies on behalf of their client (the actual company). So most of these jobs will have a 2 stage interview (first with the recruitment agency, and if they like me, i'd go on to be interviewed by the actual company).

Today hasn't been great. Haven't seen any new jobs to apply to and its too early to chase the ones i've already sent a CV and covering letter too. The waiting games sucks but i knew it would be a slow process. I really want to get out of contracting.

Way back in '89 I managed to go from $18k/year (probation salary would have bumped to 24k) to $33k/year by moving from a bank in Detroit suburbs to Motorola in Chicago suburbs. Nearly double with that move.

Not really a raise, but there was a salary leveling that bumped our salaries 21%. On the down side, after having my position outsourced and the jobs situation, the salary was reduced over 30% to work at the new place.

Well i've already started looking and i doubt i'll find another job where i am now. I'm either over qualified and unlikely to stay for as long as they want or i'm under qualified and unable to do the job. Also a lot of people are being made redundant across the whole company ( in particular out of my team of 10, 8 of us are being let go) so i'm not exactly hedging my bets on returning.

But yeah we'll see what happens. Any success stories i will now attribute to you wishing me good luck.
