March 11th and 13th (Friday & Sunday - Saturday is limited to even fewer restaurants) of PAX East also happen to be the days of Restaurant Week in Boston. If you haven't heard of restaurant week, its an event that happens twice or so a year in which some of the BEST RESTAURANTS (like 4-5 star restaurants) in Boston are offering amazing deals. Places that you'd usually spend about $100 per person are only $33.11 for a 3-course meal: Appetizer, Main Course, Dessert. Most of these places will also offer 2-course Lunch for $15.11.
(I don't know if this has been mentioned. The search function doesn't work so I tried the browser search for each page of threads!)
I know many of us might not be able to afford even $33.11 + drinks + tip for dinner ($15.11 for lunch) but if you want to eat some of the best of what Boston has to offer then consider yourself lucky that Pax East falls in the middle of Restaurant Week!!
You basically go in and mention you want to order from the Restaurant Week menu. the menu usually gives you a choice of 3-5 items for EACH course.
Some of the restaurants include:
The Capital Grille (Steak and more)
Davio's (Seafood and Steak)
Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar (Steak)
Legal Sea Foods - Both Copley and Park Square (Seafood)
Lucca Back Bay (Italian)
Palm Restaurant at the Westin Hotel (Steak)
Papa Razzi (Italian)
Smith & Wollensky (Steak)
Sonsie (This place was on the movie Fever Pitch)
Top of the Hub (View the whole city of Boston while eating)
*READ THE THREAD BELOW FOR YOUR FELLOW PAX'ERS LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS!*
Skip Legal's entirely.
Skip Top of the Hub, go to the bar and get a drink instead if you really must visit.
Skip Papa Razzi (seriously, there are far better Italian places doing Restaurant Week).
You'll notice that several of the area hotel restaurants are participating. I can't recommend 606 at the Renaissance (they're OK, but not quite haute cuisine enough to really get me excited about a deal like this). My favorites in the PAX neighborhood are:
Meritage (try the wine!!)
Morton's (yeah it's a chain restaurant, still a good and hearty steak dinner - looks like you can't grab lunch there on the weekend, only dinner)
Sel de la Terre (my favorite of this list! Great French and French-inspired goodies)
Sauciety at the Westin, right next door to the BCEC, is participating. I've not been there, so I may try it out! I've heard mixed reviews about them.
The waterfront list is the closest, but any Boston neighborhood (Back Bay, South End, Waterfront, Faneuil Hall) except for Eastie is easy to get to from our digs. Like the man said, call the place up and book NOW if you love fine dining and want to give this a try - every place will surely fill up on the weekend!!

I'm with you on that. I'd rather visit the local businesses that are usually much more focused on their craft and bring generations of experience into their food and service. I didn't mean to list any recommendations , it was just a list for people to see what kind of restaurants are involved.. from 4-5 stars... not like TGFI's lol. I'm curious, which restaurants are you thinking of trying? I didn't list alot but atleast the ones that I've been to before. I've been meaning to try out Atlantic Fish(lunch only) and Summer Shack.

Like I said to VisionOfClarity.... I'd rather visit the local businesses that are usually much more focused on their craft and bring generations of experience into their food and service. They will prepare and cook the foods "real englanders" have been doing for centuries. Whereas chains like Legal Seafood (while still good seafood) are really just leveraging their Brand. You'll like what you eat, it's just nothing special (especially to a new englander) and over-priced. Though Restaurant Week will help in the price department! Feel free to go to Legal, you'll probably like it especially if it's just across the street. But I would try other places.
Also let me recommend The Chart House (seafood). I know it is a major city-chain but I think it's very good and I love seafood. It's also in John Hancock's home/office so a bit of historic atmosphere there. It's next to the Aquarium.
Appreciate the recommendations. Atlantic Seafood isn't much further to walk to from the hotel than Legal is. Perhaps we will try lunch there. Thanks for the info.
What's wrong with Legal? It's right across the street from my hotel and I'm planning on going for Dinner on Thursday.
There's nothing at all wrong with Legal -- it's a good seafood restaurant.
There is a local bias against it (I think partially because it's a chain), and most locals you talk to will suggest another restaurant.
What he said. You'll have a great time at Legal. The 'we serve it at presidential inaugurations!' chowder is a safe bet, and personally I go for the wood grilled rainbow trout with cajun spices.
In general, Legal's is vastly over rated. The entire experience can be described as mediocre which would be fine if not for the prices they charge. It is unbelievably over priced, and this makes it a place I never recommend. Honestly, I'd choose the chowder at Boston Chowdah in Faneuil Hall over Legal's.
tchenry: I have done: Gargoyles on the Square (totally skippable, very bleh, maybe they'll have a better menu this year), Gaslight (this became a regular place for me and I did the SE++ fancy dinner here last year, they handled 22 of us on a Saturday night like champs, this is the place I brought everyone who visited from out of town to, but i'm a sucker for the tartare here), McCormick (only ate there once but I had some incredible oysters and salmon), Skipjacks (got a stuffed lobster that made me cry) and Beehive (really enjoyed their take on chicken fried steak).
Places I want to try: Marliave (I love Wellington), Chart House (I've been meaning to go for like 6 years), Sibling Rivalry (I know this place is super over rated but I want to give it a go), Sonsie (I walked by this every Saturday and never popped in but kind of want to) and Upstairs on the Square (a place I've thought about going many times but never pulled the trigger, not sure why I want to go, maybe it's that stupid zebra).
Skipjack's is my favorite for seafood, but I'm not a big seafood guy. I do agree that Legal's is OK, but a bit overpriced and overrated. LTK is definitely a step up, as they're a bit more experimental and cheaper too. Beware, though, that they serve a lot of salty dishes, the better to induce more drink orders.
VisionOfClarity: Upstairs at the Square is quite expensive, but it's my favorite restaurant in the city. Chef Brand has a magnificently inventive menu (I've had fixed menus themed around tomatoes up to and including the dessert, complete with superb wine pairings - and I usually don't dig on wine). If they're doing Restaurant Week, go there without fail.
My recent favorite restaurant is Myers and Chang in the South End - quirky Chinese-American fusion, Joanne Chang is some sort of goddamned cooking magician! - but it doesn't look like they're doing Restaurant Week this year.
It's a shame I've never been to Marliave as I work right up the street
And I love oysters

I just stopped by JJ Foleys on Summer and Kingston for dinner, and they're really good. Their beef stew is a definite +, their Snakebite is really tasty (mmm, Magners), and their service is really "old world" style. If any of you have a hankering for something a little more affordable, they're definitely an option.

Wanted to reiterate that restaurant week typically does not include Saturday night, so be aware.
It's just not one of the better places in town for seafood. If you're going to LTK, disregard my comment entirely

That's the listing for the back bay neighborhood, which is where PAXEAST took place last year. We're on the waterfront this year.

My personal preference is for Atlantic Fish, but if Legal were convenient, it's fine (really!).

Other semi-cheap seafood in the area (non-restaurant week) is Yankee Lobster and James Hook's lobster.
thanks Mike for that link! Stupid me I didn't realize it was the Back Bay View. I'll add it to my OP.

I cannot recommend them enough!
Just a few blocks from my hotel too. Perfect.
i assume our party is closed by now, but
the menu looks amazing
i recommend it for others over the weekend
I'm probably going to stop by on Friday if I have the time but my schedule for that day is going to be amazingly busy.
note that we have the upstairs to ourselves (our party is like 20 plus now, i think) so i dunno if it'll be blocked off or whatever
but if not yeah feel free to stop by
i'll be wearing a grey cardigan
and a lazy eye
And I love oysters

I'd highly recommend The Barking Crab for seafood. It's down at the end of the seaport, and is excellent.
I'd say...10ish min walk from PAX.

I really like the view in the upstairs dining room. It makes me wish I owned the building so I could just live there
