Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Thanks for everyone who took part in the trading card swap this year!
This thread is for two purposes:
1. Help people track down the cards they still need.
Please send me a DM with your name, address, and the cards you would like. Please remember that you can ask for 2010 and 2011 cards, regardless of when you took part or whether you gave me spares.
What I liked
- Trading cards in and of itself was awesome. They were super easy to make with the template and just all around cool. I also threw some cards out to people who looked on with awe as we were swapping them, so perhaps we'll get even higher participation next year.
- Meeting people was cool as well. Putting faces on people was fantastic, totally changes the experience now when I read Twitter or Forum posts.
What to improve
- More scheduled meetups are needed. Watching Twitter was like trolling for gummi bears in a sewer. I had a #paxcards search set up and kept my eyes glued to Tweetdeck, but with twitlag and the fact that many people don't know that the bird is the word it was hard to find specific people. Having scheduled meetups means we can really get some trading going on early on in the game. I think it would create more of a paxcard community as well.
- Checklist could be improved. I jerrymandered a nice folding one that made it pretty quick to find people and check them off, but I could have (with a bit more lead time) come up with a really nice one in publisher that you'd be able to fold down to a book format and flip through easily. Also - perhaps organizing the checklist by name would be good (most people didn't know their numbers when I asked). [Note - I am willing to help out in this regard! I like helping! It makes me feel less leechy!]
- People need to be more aggressive. I felt like a mugger sometimes as I leaped toward people, my card thrust out in my sweaty palm going "CARDS???" like a deranged addict looking to score some smack. It worked, but I swear I had 4 cards in my hat, 1 in my lanyard, and still I had people at point blank range go "Oh, are you trading cards?" Maybe we can all wear hot pink or something? I dunno.
- I heard talk of a full collection being put together at PAX East 2010, kinda sad that didn't happen here. Would this be a cool gift to give to Jerry and Mike?
Crazy shit ahoy!
Spoiler:
So.... how would people feel about making a CCG for next Pax where we are the cards? Just a thought - please feel free to shit all over it.
CCG was the original idea that turned into normal trading cards. *shrugs* now with some experience with pax trading cards, a ccg might be feasable next year, who knows.
Dunno what to say about this trading card biz. I ordered 100-150, got 250+, and met 2 or 3 trading card people during pax. so I spent my time giving a card to anyone, repeat for emphasis anyone I talked to/with.
pax is getting too big for the random trades, I think
I still have cards available actually more than 70. Also I think there should be a meeting setup midday r maby at 5pm or 6pm on a friday or a saturday as everyone attends both those days and not everyone can make it to either Sunday or manages to get a Sunday pass.
Daily meetups at a scheduled time and place, like the tabletop area, is about the only thing I'd improve. Otherwise, as I've said before, the concept is awesome and I had fun making the cards, it was just hard to track people down.

I imagine that the level 0 queue room would be useful for meetups (if they keep that arrangement), since it was empty most of the times I passed by it.
I didn't bother with the checklist, so I don't have an opinion on that. But the daily gatherings would help, yes.

My only suggestion is more meetups. The only one I am aware of was the one after the omegathon at the Westin, which I slept through. The only cards I collected were of the few I sa won the prepax dinner and pokecrawl. Needless to say i will be mailing my extra cards to Dave for distribution.
I can say as an enforcer it is pretty easy to trade with fellow enforcers but with attendees again it seemed i did not make much in the way of trades. This year i did manage to trade with more people then i did last year.
I even used a separate lanyard this time and still only a few of you spotted it. I was working manticore theater all weekend and that was the only place people saw me well least i traded cards.
Suggestion to make this more successful would be to come up with something that stands out. Similar to like the cookie brigade or Pokemon league. Same color shirts will not work. As an enforcer I already have a shirt i am required to wear. A big button would work though.
Definitely more meet ups. I went all day Friday without finding a single person.
A general suggestion to everyone - Advertise yourself! Put a card somewhere really obvious that people can see from a distance. Once my (tall) boyfriend put a couple in his hat, we started getting some trading done.
I think a CCG based on us would be kinda neat. Not sure logistically possible it is. Sounds like a lot of work for someone(s).
Going to go through my cards see what I need, and send off some extras this weekend.
I'd even suggest a party... Like everyone comes with their cards and ready to collect cards and it'd just be another excuse to drink lol... Like say Friday night since nothing else goes on after the con closes... or maybe even following the pokecrawl.
I ran an "Arkham Horror" night that turned into a "show up and bring games, we'll have some food and shit" night. I was planning on doing this again next year and getting a bit more advanced with it, this year I just went to the hotel and said "How much for a meeting room? We are poor gamers" and the fee was reasonable. Perhaps we could look into doing something similar for card participants? Bring over some personal board games and other shit and have a great evening. With the amount of people who did the cards this year the cost would be minimal, or if people wanted to just throw out a tip cup that would probably cover it too.
God, isn't it pathetically crazy that I'm already Jonesin' for PAX East 2012?
Not at all. I'm already looking at hotels for Prime (and have more or less decided where I'm staying), already found the flight I'm going to take, deciding whether or not it would be worth my while to organize a speed-chess tournament (I only thought of this one about 2 days before I left for East, otherwise there would have been something there, but I still don't know if there would be enough interest), comparing costs between Boston & Seattle so I know how much money I'll need...Ok, maybe I'm also pathetically crazy. Either that or I'm trying to make up for all the years that I wanted to go but didn't.

More meetups is definitely the way to go. Not everyone could make on on Sunday, so there are some gaps in the collection. Though I'm still impressed by the number we did trade - over 50, by a rough count. It was awesome to meet everyone!
I found it really difficult to locate other card traders during the show itself. We ran into a few by luck alone, but with only a hundred or two of us amidst 69 thousand attendees, it was a classic needle-in-haystack phenomenon.
I agree with more meet-ups. PAX is just way too big. I didn't really use the checklist and Twitter helped but not as much as I hoped (of course, I don't have Verizon...). A CCG would be cool (and completely unbalanced) but I'm not sure how it would work. It'll probably need way more prep.
CCG would definitely need more prep. But depending on the game model it could be easier or more difficult. I will be the first to admit I don't play enough CCGs to know what model might work best, but we have a full year to try.
I wasn't able to participate in this due to finding out about pax east 2011 three weeks before it happened, and then not finding out about the forum 4 days before it happened, but I really want to be a part of this next year... my question is, will the templates change for next year? should I go ahead and start making my cards now, or wait till next year for a new design? thanks!
I have a ton of left over cards, I kept one pinned to my lanyard. I pretty much jumped at anyone I saw with them as well as yelling on the shuttle bus for them.
Dave, can you PM me your addy so I can mail some to you?
Based on feedback we will definitely be doing more meetups next year. Last year we didn't know the venue as well and there were less people involved so the Friday/Saturday meetups were a little... lackluster. I don't believe we will run into this problem in 2012.
My hope is to design a brand new template! What kind of ideas/designs do people have?
I didn't check the forums enough, but when my Fiancée and I met a cool dude in line for Make a Strip, we giddily asked for a trading card, because THAT'S AWESOME. Thank you, lastryghtz. You are my first PAX trading card, and you are going in a SLEEVE.
As for meet-ups, I have to disagree! If you all just meet-up to swap, there's no "thrill". But, I agree the con is HUGE. Maybe designate an area in tabletop to "relax" when you need to chill, and just make sure to always hit it. Only slightly different from a meet-up, but at least it's got that random element.
You could also see if Wizards will dole some out with prizes/packs at their tourneys, kind of like the Pro-Tour Champion cards they used to have.
Either way, I'll keep my eye on this for next East.

In my hazy dreams I had come up with an awesome idea for a CCG mechanic that might work. I figure that if we were going to go after something it would have to be a "creature" heavy model. So Magic wouldn't work, or would other systems that require mana or additional cards. But making a game that was something like "Flux" or "We didn't Playtest this" might work. If people want I can try to throw my distorted thoughts into something more coherent.
The objective of the game is to be the first to fill up their que line for the main event EXACTLY. So the line has to have, say, exactly 6 people in it. Each card has either a helpful ability to you, or a hurtful ability to your opponent. You get to "play" one card a turn. Other people might hit the board due to abilities.
For example:
John Smithz: When john smith gets in line, he brings a friend. If there is no room for a friend, put john at the bottom of the deck!
Jane Doe: When jane gets in line, make two friends "sit". Those Friends cannot be removed form the line until your next turn.
Helpful Sam: Sam brought extra bottles of water. Two people in your opponent's line leave for a restroom. Put them back in their owners hand.
I love ccgs...

The Enforcers had a table set aside where every enforcer who was participating just left a stack of their cards behind and any enforcer who wanted one could take one. I'm not sure if its feasible, but maybe there's a way to set up a table like that that is accessible to everyone.
Hmm... how are people mailing their leftover cards? I put together 50 of my cards and 50 of my boyfriends... and then I thought "Do I go with less shipping $ and risk they get crushed" in a padded envelope? Or do I go with more shipping $ and send a plastic 100 count container?
I'm not a fan of turning this into a game for multiple reasons which have been voiced in other iterations of the trading card thread. I'm not opposed to the creation of a game, but I wouldn't want it to replace what we already have going on here.

Was this a publicly accessible table? I hadn't even heard of it.
I personally feel this should be more of an active trading thing, a chance to do things and meet people.

No, it wasn't publicly accessible. But next year some people might like to set up something similar on one of the tables behind expo hall. It's convenient, but you're right that it does cut into the trading aspect.
An idea: Encourage trading of multiple cards. Instead of taking one you take 10, so that you can pass some on to the next card trader you meet. It's a big con. I only ran into about four people with cards.

Yea, it's cool in theory but it wouldn't work right and would not be as good as the system we have now (not to say it's perfect).
Good point, actually. Card game making is the pits sometimes...
...might just make that game though....hang around and play at the tables.
Good luck with your cards!
Because people tend to be jumping on at the last minute it would be difficult to put together a full game (doubly so because most people would never collect a full set). I think it might be worth the effort of creating a side project in the off season of a playable game.
Most people would probably allow their likeness to be used, and this would forever solve the question of "should the trading cards be part of a playable game?"
Disclaimer: I did not participate in the Trading Card Swap, nor do I plan to in the future. However I was with HolyYakker most of the weekend.
It was just mentioned a few posts ago, but I had an idea when we were leaving Pax. People should not just swap one card to someone they meet. They should swap, like 3. This way when you meet someone not only can you get there card, you can figure out if you can get them some they don't have. Run into someone you already have? Have them give you 2, so you have more to trade. That way the game is more about trading, then luck of running into each other or planned meet ups.
Promotes more interaction between traders, and does not necessarily discourage finding everyone(since you become valuable for your collection, potentially.)
Cards will web out through Pax as opposed to forming small vaguely interlinked colonies. I think 3 is the right hand off amount but that can be debated.
If anyone has not sent out cards and intends to, please mail them out. I will be updating the availables list and shipping out needed cards in about a week.
Some people are like Slinkies. They have no practical use whatsoever,
but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
