although i guess i was thinking of merchandise. maybe it is regular income if you're just getting cash prizes. and maybe merchandise is too! taxes are hard and i'm making this up

even if that's the case, i would think the tax on a cash amount covering the taxes for a much more expensive prize would be far preferable to the original amount
